Dexed is a free, open-source frequency modulation synthesizer closely modeled after the Yamaha DX7. It recreates the characteristic sound and programming architecture of the original hardware synthesizer. Musicians can design complex sounds using six-operator FM synthesis, including electric pianos, bells, basses, and evolving textures. The software operates as a synthesizer plugin across multiple platforms and digital audio workstations. It also functions as a companion to the original DX7 through compatible patch data and MIDI System Exclusive communication. Dexed supports modern capabilities such as microtuning, parameter automation, and scalable interface controls. Its emphasis on hardware compatibility makes it useful for music production, sound design, and preserving classic digital synthesis techniques.
