[jim:~] ls -l /dev/rdvd ls: /dev/rdvd: No such file or directory This problem really does seem to have gone away. |> *shudder* you really shouldn't run xine as root Well, only once to check it out ...... The problem I'm having definitely seems to be related to the way the device file or the DVD player itself is set up. I downloaded two trial vob files (tiny little 10sec clips) from http://xine.cjb.net/ and they play just fine, with a command line like: xine /home/jim/FTP/evil.vob Video and audio both of good quality. Full screen mode also works well. So there's progress. When I try to use a DVD disk in the player, however: (i) there'n no DVD button on the control-panel (ii) sometimes (but only sometimes) I can get video to work by doing: xine dvd://vts_01_3.vob it's intermittent, though, and there's no audio, and kern.log fills with messages like: Jul 16 23:44:33 toraigh kernel: sr0: CDROM (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST. Jul 16 23:44:33 toraigh last message repeated 2 times Jul 16 23:45:52 toraigh last message repeated 3 times /dev/dvd is a symlink to /dev/sr0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jul 17 00:55 dvd -> /dev/sr0 which is in turn a link to /dev/scd0: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 Dec 26 2000 sr0 -> scd0 which is set up like this: brwxrwxrwt 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Dec 26 2000 scd0 /dev/cdrom is also a link to scd0: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Feb 14 2000 cdrom -> /dev/scd0 strace -f xine 2>&1 |grep ENOENT yields this: ------- open("/etc/ld.so.preload", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) connect(3, {sin_family=AF_UNIX, path=" /var/run/.nscd_socket"}, 110) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/home/jim/.imrc", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/syncfb", O_RDWR|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) stat64(0x401f3a6a, 0xbffff4bc) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp0", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp4", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp5", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp6", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp7", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp8", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp9", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp10", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp11", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp12", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp13", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/dev/dsp14", O_WRONLY|O_NONBLOCK|0x8000) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) ------- Thanks again for all your help.
