I've noticed this when playing DVDs under Windows. I always thought it
was to do with the surround encoding. If I enable Dolby Pro-Logic on my
amp it is sort of fixed. Having a centre speaker for speech seems to help.

It's irritating, isn't it. The interrogation scene in The Matrix is
particularly bad, but then you have no problem (and neither does anyone
in a 5 mile radius :) hearing the scene where they wipe out the bottom
floor of that skyscraper...
