I also fixed a small bug in the fullscreen code so 4:3 streams won't have the top and bottom slice cut of (but might have black borders on the left and right now - sorry ;)) We still need code that checks the h/v dpi resolution of the screens for non-square pixel displays. Siggi, you mentioned xdpyinfo has this information, did you have a look and their code in the meantime?
