  $ gxine -vvv

may be helpful.

Have you built it with debug information ("make debug")? If so, start it as
shown above then attach gdb to it (from a different terminal) when it hangs.
I'm interested in backtraces here, so 'thread apply all bt' or some variation
on that may be useful.

Trying older versions and (if you have GTK+2.6) CVS HEAD may also be of use.
