The demuxer used when playing the DVD directly relies on correct NAV packets embedded in the MPEG stream, while the demuxer used when playing the VOBs directly does not. This indicates that the NAV packets are badly authored, which is probably a bug in dvdauthor. (I still use 0.6.10 here, which appears to work fine.) If you are not afraid of Windows, you could also try authoring the DVD with IFOEdit.
