The text I wrote in the FAQ about the SBLive 5.1 hasn't been updated for a 
while because I don't use that device any more (only use dxr3 at the moment).
I still believe that the FAQ should apply to a working version of the driver. 
We can not change the FAQ every time that a driver version doesn't support a 
function. I think for these exceptions, mailing lists exists.
Perhaps an alsa part should be added to the SBLive part in the FAQ (I didn't 
do this because at the time of writing, alsa didn't do much more/less than 
crashing my system :-) ). If someone could add it (James, you're the expert I 
guess) that would be helpful.
