If I remember correctly, Linux (Shrike) is RedHat 9.0. The error looks to me 
as if either gunzip, or a library that gunzip needs is missing - both are 
unlikely in this version of RedHat.

Instead of (one command):
	tar xfvz xine-lib-1rc0a.tar.gz
try the equivalent (two commands):
	gunzip xine-lib-1rc0a.tar.gz
	tar xfv xine-lib-1rc0a.tar
I am guessing that you will get an error on the first one.
