hallo miguel, > i guess that it might better to ship pp disabled by default. users are > generally unaware of configuration options and it's bad to drop frames > on slow systems. less serious is not post processing on fast computers. i think exactly the opposite is true - decoding mpeg4 without postprocessing is simply wrong. mpeg4 has been designed with postprocessing so encoders are correct if they assume that postprocessing will be done while decoding - and practical results clearly show how ugly some streams look without postprocessing. one could also argue that xine will get faster if only motion compensation is done and dct correction is skipped (i actually implemented this a while back ;)). i think we should look at absolute rather than relative values here. afaik any reasonable current computer can play back mpeg4 streams without dropping frames with postprocessing enabled. in fact, even on a very old 600 mhz celeron processor postprocessing is hardly noticable in top and definitely doesn't make that machine drop frames (made that experiment on heiko's machine). users who are still using even slower system need to get used to tweaking their system for better performance while the wast majority of users with at least somewhat up-to-date systems (keep in mind that the average supermarket pc sold today i clocked around 2.4 GHz) - i think in this group you'll find most novice users btw - should get the best performance out-of-the box - and here performance not only means not dropping frames but also best audio and video quality possible. guenter -- Those of you who think you know everything are very annoying to those of us who do. |
