When playing ripped VOBs over NFS, there is a distinct gap when one VOB is over and the next one starts playing. The gap between VOBs is there even when the VOBs are local, but it's much smaller, almost unnoticeable. It's not because of the network or the NFS server, because they are quite fast. I would suggest to cache read-ahead not only the current file, but also the beginning of the next one.
