[xine-user] no sound and jerky playback

I have suse 8.0, an nvidia card running in 3D, and soundblaster live.
I am running alsa in yast2.
In control central it says startup arts at startup.
I have installed all rpms and here is the problem.
The video runs jerky.  It runs smooth then stops and runs and  stops.
The sound is not working. =20
I notice that it says "null driver" in the configuration under audio.
Can you help.  I hope that I can use the rpms instead of the tar files.
