Scenario b) might be done with a post plugin (you must be getting tired of me inventing new uses for this every day ;) that looks at the frame's vpts as they pass by and calls back if necessary. That would have no performance impact for existing GUIs, since they would not have to insert this plugin into the decoder -> video out pipe.
