Siggi, Thanks for your help; I just written as root: chmod 666 /dev/hdd and now the results are the same for root as for any user. This situation, with the dvd link created but the permissions still not enabled for users could be the same for others users. Perhaps should be a good idea put the appropiate instructions to enable read/write dvd-permissions for all users close to the recommendation about how to make the link. Anyway, thanks so much for your quick answer and congratulations for the application. This is actually your problem as normal user. > /dev/dvd: Permission denied > [ hint ] DMA is disabled for your DVD interface. here, the check fails (Permission denied), and the script gives a confusing message, as it assumes that DMA is disabled. I'll look into that... [as root] > [ good ] DMA is enabled for your DVD drive This one is correct. > Does that means that xine will run better the dvds runing it as root > that as > normal user? No, it means that your DVD drive currently has wrong permissions, so it doesn't allow you to be accessed as normal user. (not at all...) When you fix this, it will run fine with your account. It's definitely a bad idea to run xine as root, as it could quite easily be tricked into doing anything if some malicous person would give you a specially prepared stream. ie it's a great security risk, and the next version of xine-check already contains a warning about that...
