Good point ..

NVidia drivers, ALSA and/or OSS, linux 2.4.9, latest cvs xine, dvdnav,
d4d, mostly Red Hat Rawhide.

Not sure if it has anything to do with the sound given that it turns up
in both major sound setups.

Anyone else seen this effect ?
