Firstly reformatting an xbox hd is never a good idea. You can take larger pc drives and copy the xbox data to them to make an xbox drive that way. Secondly there is no "linux mechassault disk". Of course if you had a modchip you could burn any disk you want to the dvdr and if the disk had an xbox version of linux on it then it would run. |

Yes lol im still trying to figure out a different method of installing linux on my Xbox, But my main question is, instead of using a memory stick, xbmc or reformatting the HD..
Is it possible for someone to just burn the linux mech assault disk to there hard drive then upload it to a site, then let us burn it to our dvdr's?
thanks

Hi, i wanted to know what starts X. I scanned the init scripts, but i can't seem to find it. I thought xdm would start X, but after stopping the service and killing X, it gets respawned. I have killed it but it gets respawned. I have been able to stop it by renaming startx to something else and killing off X. |

I've managed to use GentooX running on a PC to read/write FATX formatted USB keys and FATX formatted Xbox hard drives. Make sure you use the correct kernel when you boot the CD and it will run on the PC and give you the ability to read/write FATX as well as your local machine's filesystem. Its been awhile, but I believe you can use action replay to move the files over. If you have a router and two regular ethernet cables you dont need a cross over cable. OK, started working on it and think I encountered the first hurdle , quite early in the process .. Once the USB stick gets recognized by the Xbox, the FATX will be used to wipe the drive. Now the question : how do I after that place the gamesaves on it ? Windows itself cannot use FATX, and I tried a VMware of Ubuntu but it did not seem to like the stick that much ... Any tips ? (I am sure once this hurdle is taken, the next one will be to get FTP to the XBOX, I saw a crossover cable is required what I do not have... ) Cheers, HJ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darren Wilkinson" <xb...@ch...> Newsgroups: gmane.linux.ports.xbox.user To: <xbo...@li...> Sent: Sunday, August 26, 2007 11:04 PM Subject: Re: newbie getting buried in info : XBMC > Darren Wilkinson wrote: >> Henk-Jan wrote: >> >>> Rip out old HD, copy over the partition structure and contents of the 8 >>> or >>> 10 Gb drive to the 320 Gb drive, which is otherwise empty >>> >>> >> Yes, but you've got to unlock the drive first. > > Also you should register on the forums of xbox-scene.com. I was initially looking at Xebian myself to use the Xbox for media purposes. In this case we are trying to do a streaming video network using Xbox as the client set top boxes for streaming video over LAN. (The Xbox seemed cheap, effective, and had native TV out support which lower end off lease computers do not support.) So in screwing around with Xebian Sarge and VLC 0.8.2 for a few weeks and not having much success in making the Xbox 'effective', I decided to just try XBMC, since it would run a lot smoother. In retrospect, a general purpose operating system on purpose built hardware with a few modifications (Some of which are not all that reliable) just wasn't the best for what I needed it to do. Xbox Media Center, being coded specifcly for the Xbox and compiled using Micosoft's own Xbox Development Kit means it runs as well as any Xbox game runs on the Xbox so it's smooth as silk. XBMC basicly uses Mplayer as it's media playing core so it was agian well suited for my purposes. For modding, you will really only need two things, an Action Replay and one of three three useable games to modify the Xbox. The Ndure soft mod WILL work on any version of Xbox. However older Xbox's have older dashboards and need upgrading to 5920 but this can be done manually which is what I've done since I've modded 4 Xbox's so far for our streaming video project. To get the right game, just go to any used game store and ask for the game and have them look for the right serial number. I got funny looks at EB Games but they found me the right version of Splinter Cell after 4 discs. When you start the mod tool, it enables FTP access. I downloaded a copy of the 5920 Dashboard for Xbox and I can just delete the old dashboard off the Xbox and FTP on the new version. A lot easier than say, installing an operating system on a PC. I find it quite user friendly once you figure it out. Also while in the Ndure installer you can copy the 'EEPROM' data and such that's necessary to unlock and lock the hard drive. You can then FTP that off the Xbox and use for other tools, such as Xbox HDM. (I've only used Xbox HDM once, that was when my Xbox hard drive was 'fucked' in such a way that all Xbox aps worked fine but Xebian couldn't correctly format the drive for it's use. Yeah, I have no idea why it was like that. If you just FTP on the new Dashboard (Assuming your machine doesn't already have 5920 on the Xbox) and then go threw Ndures install process which is very procedural and hard to screw up. Once that is installed, you can just download Xbox media Center, go to the dashboard folder on E:\ on the Xbox, delete the UnleashX or what ever dashboard Ndure installed, and FTP XBMC into that location and just reboot. As I've learned, it is hard to PERMINANTLY fuck up your Xbox. So long as the exploited save game is on your Xbox in the save game area, you have the game CD, and a backup of the necessary Xbox data on your PC, you can always regain FTP access and return your Xbox to normal or just wash everything off and leave it 'unmodified'. When I'm modding Xbox's I just make sure to have backup data on the PC, basicly a clone of the Xbox's C:\ and E:\ drives. I've been yet to do an HDD upgrade on an Xbox but I will for our XBMC in our living room soon, but it's really no different than when I used Xbox HDM to 'repair' the drive... Just using a bigger drive. -Ashley Hakker >From: "Henk-Jan" <sm...@wa...> >Reply-To: xbo...@li... >To: <xbo...@li...> >Subject: Re: [Xbox-linux-user] newbie getting buried in info : XBMC >Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2007 12:49:02 +0200 > >ok, so to recap : > >first apply softmod (which backs up BIOS onto a partition on original HD) >Rip out old HD, copy over the partition structure and contents of the 8 or >10 Gb drive to the 320 Gb drive, which is otherwise empty >Get the new HD patched, signature wise to allow the HD to be used in the >XBox (this needs to be done connecting the HD to a PC ?!) >load the XBMC folder structure onto the drive (also from having the drive >hooked up to the PC yet ?) >place the new HD in the Xbox >boot ? > > > > > > >------------------------------------------------------------------------- >This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. >Still grepping through log files to find problems? ok, so to recap : first apply softmod (which backs up BIOS onto a partition on original HD) Rip out old HD, copy over the partition structure and contents of the 8 or 10 Gb drive to the 320 Gb drive, which is otherwise empty Get the new HD patched, signature wise to allow the HD to be used in the XBox (this needs to be done connecting the HD to a PC ?!) load the XBMC folder structure onto the drive (also from having the drive hooked up to the PC yet ?) place the new HD in the Xbox boot ? |

The dashboard can then do other stuff (play music, load emulators, linux, XBMC, xbox games from hd, other dashboards etc). Most homebrew apps also have an option to exit to the dashboard. Linux on a chipped box can *if you so wish* take over the entire hd but it is in no way necessary and on a softmodded box is not recommended. |

Think of XBMC and linux as two seperate apps. Don't think of it as an actual operating system for the xbox, unless you want to think of XBMC and EvoX and Avalaunch as apps too. linux can be launched from XBMC or any other illegal hacker dash. Linux cannot launch any other applications. -Patrick P.S. the thing about having that version xbox means you have a certain dash version and a kernel that won't let you downgrade. If you can find a hack that works on that dash version (certainly not the xbox-linux hack. you'll have to look to the dark side for help there) then you should be fine. Hi Darren, I've read a lot more, but still am concerned about having a 2005 version 1.6 Xbox, and e.g. http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/FAQ#Why_Linux.3F_Why_not_Windows.3F will tell you no softmodding can be done. Don't want to realize halfway thru that I have to reverse the whole thing and start looking around for a chip. I thought you may have a suggestion ? Also, 320 Gb should not be a problem, should it ? (using Linux, or XBMC, see also following question) By the way, Linux can be put on such a system, or XBMC. I XBMC an app running from within Linux, or is this a standalone running thing which eliminates the option of having Linux on the Xbox ? cheers, a hesitant Xbox owner ;-) > The softmod NEEDS drive locking. The original xbox drive is locked with > a code made form both the a unique HD drive signature and a unique xbox > bios code and the bios refuses to boot anything if it can't go through > the process of unlocking the drive. Is the > softmod also intended to avoid drive locking (I assume not) ? The softmod NEEDS drive locking. The original xbox drive is locked with a code made form both the a unique HD drive signature and a unique xbox bios code and the bios refuses to boot anything if it can't go through the process of unlocking the drive. It then tries to boot, from the hard drive, into the microsoft code but runs into the softmod which then runs your choice of dashboard and programs. The softmod you install should backup the xbox bios to a file in the E: partition of the drive. The tools at www.xbox-scene.com will ask you for the xbox bios file and the drive you wish to lock and will give you the "key" which you should write down and keep safe. Things to keep in mind? 1. You've got to find somewhere to store the data already on the 320gb drive until the process is finished. 2. If the xbox menu doesn't give you the "copy" option when looking at the usb stick then tap the joystick right first ;) |

Thanks for your patience, I am in the process of getting the USB - Xbox cable / converter, as well as an original Splinter Cell. One more question if you do not mind. How does my "trying to fit a WD 320 HD" fit in here (so ripping out the old drive), at what point to I do so ? Before or after the softmod, and what do I need to keep in mind ? Is the softmod also intended to avoid drive locking (I assume not) ? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Darren Wilkinson" <chi...@ch...> Newsgroups: gmane.linux.ports.xbox.user To: <xbo...@li...> Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2007 11:14 PM Subject: Re: newbie getting buried in info : XBMC > Henk-Jan wrote: >> Hmm, is this what I require to get to a save game (using a USB memory >> stick >> I have laying around) ? > As long as that stick didn't need any drivers to work in any operating > system (except anything before windows xp) it'll be fine. As long as that stick didn't need any drivers to work in any operating system (except anything before windows xp) it'll be fine. In fact download any of the xbox linux distros and boot them on your pc. If that recognises the usb stick with the "mount /dev/sda /whateverdirectory" command (or possibly mount /dev/sdb or sdc depending on if you have any sata drives) you can run "mkfs.fatx" and copy the folders across. The folder names will be 8 digit hex values to be put in the UDATA folder |

After all the box isn't hacked *yet*. You also need the first releases of the games (not "classix" or "platinum" or any other re-release). |

shrug, postage wouldnt be that bad, if you strip the xbox down, and take out everything it doesnt need and pack it properly, probably be a max of 20 dollars. all i need to modify it is mobo/psu/harddrive On 8/18/07, Henk-Jan <sm...@wa...> wrote: > Hmm, is this what I require to get to a save game (using a USB memory stick > I have laying around) ? > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Darren Wilkinson" <chi...@ch...> > Newsgroups: gmane.linux.ports.xbox.user > To: <xbo...@li...> > Sent: Saturday, August 18, 2007 12:59 AM > Subject: Re: newbie getting buried in info : XBMC > > > > Henk-Jan wrote: > >> Ok, that is good info.
