Find the various versions on the "Files" tab (https://sourceforge.net/projects/wsjt-x-improved/files/)

wsjt-x_improved is an enhanced version ("the DG2YCB edition") of the excellent WSJT-X software by Joe Taylor K1JT, Steve Franke K9AN, Bill Somerville G4WJS, me and others (https://sourceforge.net/projects/wsjt/). Sometimes, however, even good things can be improved …

Notes: wsjt-x_improved is experimental and is licensed under GNU GPL v3 (https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.txt). I am not aware of any adverse effects. However, use it at your own risk!

Features

  • Highlighting of CQ and 73/RR73 messages.
  • Available with 3 different GUIs: WSJT-X's standard GUI, an alternative layout ("AL") and a widescreen version. The latter two provide a larger Band Activity window. "AL" is optimized for small screens and laptops.
  • Mode buttons make it easy to switch between the frequently used modes (useful when menus are hidden). For Hound mode, simply set your rig's VFO to the correct DXp frequency. When you hear the fox, just press the "H" button and make your QSO. Press the "H" button again to return to normal FT8 mode.
  • Band Hopping for FT8, FT4, Q65 and MSK144! A new Tab has checkboxes for the most important frequencies. Just select the bands/modes you want and push the "Band Hopping" button. Automatic band hopping takes place every other full minute. (Very useful together with PSKReporter.)
  • FT8 and FT4 decoders optimized for DX.
  • More frequent updates and faster bug fixes, including the latest Hamlib files.
  • In the Wide Graph window, text of the "Control" checkbox has been removed to prevent accidental ticking when setting lower audio frequencies.
  • Call CQ with individual contest names instead of "TEST" (e.g. CQ PACC ...).
  • False Decodes Reduction (FDR)! It reduces significantly the number of FT8 false decodes without a reduction of the sensitivity. It only increases the required confidence level for some unusual message formats.
  • A so-called diagnostic mode allows you to collect data to troubleshoot problems with wsjt-x_improved, or its communication with your rig.
  • Bars for the Tx and Rx audio frequencies on the Wide Graph (like JTDX).
  • Right-click on the waterfall directly sets the Tx audio frequency.
  • Doubleclick on the Lookup button searches on QRZ.com for the callsign from the DX Call box.
  • PLUS versions with more features (audible alerts, Cloudlog support, etc.) available.
  • Dark Style: Now it is possible to switch the dark style on and off directly in the main window. Just click on the new item "Use Dark Style" in the "View" menu. For dark style, it is recommended to adjust the highlight color scheme towards pastel tones.
  • "Wait and Reply" and "Wait and Call" are nice little assistance functions to help finish a QSO more intelligently than calling all the time when the other station does not answer, or disappears temporarily due to QSB.
  • Full Duplex Mode (useful when working via satellite)
  • AutoSeq also for JT65 and JT9.
  • Update Hamlib directly from the program (Windows only).
  • Read and display PWR and SWR values during transmission.
  • Stop TX automatically if SWR > 2.5.
  • New: Band select buttons.

User Reviews

  • The "Band Select" buttons are a feature I would never use and I find they add clutter to the screen. Making them selectable on/off through setup is recommended.
  • YouTube reviewers are showing this software; it really looks like there are features I would like to use. However... I cannot download it as Chrome, FireFox, and ESET report it is infected with "pilotfiber" and as it is a threat is removed.
  • Works great except for one problem. With the “non-improved” version I am able to size the windows by dragging the edges so that I can fit Call Roster from the GridTracker program on the same screen. While this version can be resized using the drag technique ot is apparently restricted in how much the size can be reduced. Too bad. Makes it unusable for my situation.

  • Nice updates to WSJT-X, however a little bit "buggy" still. Program will freeze on occasion and needs to be shut down and restarted. Also, for some reason, on occasion, radio will not transmit, requiring a re-start. Neither of these two issues are present in WSJT-X. Once these issues are ironed out, I think you have a keeper.

Hi, as wsjt-x_improved and WSJT-X have the same source code kernel, it is very likely that such issues can be caused by the Hamlib version in use. Usually, I use the latest hamlib version for my 'improved' variant of WSJTX, but sometimes, for some rigs it can be helpful to go back to an older version of hamlib. On Windows, however, this can easily be done via the "Radio" tab of the Settings dialog. 73 de Uwe, DG2YCB
  • Great software, like the additional features. I would like to really see the band select bar as was done in JTDX_improved.

Hi Mike, this is on my (very long) to-do list. Main reason why I have not yet implemented this is that there are some general issues with buttons on macOS (especially when they are small).
