Hello,

 

My organization uses WinMerge extensively as part of its manual testing
process. I recently downloaded a version of the source code and added a
feature whereby files can be compared "alphanumerically", with numerical
segments in the files compared as numbers (subject to numerical tolerances)
and text segments compared as regular text. I would like to submit those
changes to WinMerge.org as per the open-source license, but I can't find out
how.

 

Can anyone point me to a description of the procedure for submitting code
changes?

[Winmerge-development] Couple thoughts on COM Plugins

I recently wrote a basic prediffer plugin and had a couple thoughts on the current 
WinMerge plugin system that i thought were worth sharing

I still program in VB6, so the current COM system was perfect for me.

This is actually a cool feature if applied right. In the plugin i wrote,
i wanted a debug pane that would show before and after text and allow the user
to interactively see what was going on and manually edit the transformations
if need be before returning the data to WinMerge. Showing the form modally
allowed for this to work seamlessly which is a big feature.

If the plugin author is accidentally hanging stuff with msgboxes or causing crashs
thats their problem as long as those plugins arent part of the main installation.

My only wish would be for there to be a way to automatically apply a prediffer 
based on file extension. Looks like this may have been the intent at one point.
I may try to figure out a way to automate the menu clicks to enable my prediffer
automatically after I launch winmerge from my main app.

I understand the COM plugins are probably going away in 3.x and know C++ COM
code is no fun. Just thought i would share a couple thoughts and an example of
what I did with it.

[Winmerge-development] Recent Comparisons list feature

Is winmerge 2.x still being developed?

I'd like to add a feature.  I never bother/remember to save 'projects', so
I'd like to add a 'Recent Comparisons' section under the File menu, below
Recent Projects.  This would remember comparisons done with Open (the
Select Files or Folders dialog), drag-and-drop, and the Explorer
right-click option.  It wouldn't remember file comparisons done from within
a folder compare.  Am I missing some other ways comparisons can be
initiated?

Probably the best way to do this is to make both Recent Projects and Recent
Comparison into options with an arrow on the right that pops out the
history when you mouseover it. So the file menu would look like this:

    New                     Ctrl+N
    Open...                Ctrl+O
    (blah blah)
    Save Project...
    Recent Projects           >
     Recent Comparisons    >
    Exit

This should allow the number shortcuts to still work, I think (mouse-over
Recent Projects to reveal the list, press '1', and the top recent project
should load.  same for recent comparisons).

My questions are..

Is it ok for me to add this?  Or has this been suggested before and
rejected?

Is this going to be harder than I think it will be? :D  It doesn't seem too
complicated... just have to store two paths per item instead of one

Is this format ok for the recent comparison entries? :
    1  C:\Path\...\filename1.txt <> C:\Path\...\filename2.txt
    2  C:\Path\...\folder1 <> C:\Path\...\folder2
Or maybe the separator should be <--> or <==> or |

Should I do winmerge 3 instead?  Maybe you already have this in wm3?

[Winmerge-development] Move WinMerge 2.x repository also to Mercurial?

Hi,

as it seems there is still serious work done on 2.x. WinMerge I think 
the repository would be good to be converted and moved to Mercurial and 
Bitbucket. Now it is a bit confusing as some code is in "good old" SVN 
at sf.net and some (web pages) are in Mercurial at Bitbucket.

If this move happens then we need to think the name too. Dean's 
"winmerge" repository is for WinMerge3 (which may not happen that way) 
so perhaps WinMerge 2.x repository should be "winmerge2"?

And the motivation is that Mercurial is way much nicer to work with than 
SVN. :) Bitbucket allows commit comments and whatever, it is really nice 
service nowadays... :)

[Yes, I have "winmerge-v2" repository but it is just mirror I haven't 
synched with SVN for a very long time. One can look at it how the SVN 
repo looks like as Mercurial repo but real work should not be done with 
it. I can re-synch it with current SVN state once I have a bit more time 
later this week.]

This one has been very long in the making, it’s been more than 3 years since the last beta release.
A beta release is considered ready for final release, but we just want to give developers and translators one last chance to fix any issues before the final release.

[Winmerge-development] Cognitive tweaking in the visualization of directory deltas

Hi everyone,

As a long time Winmerge user and as a person with a passion for
cognitive psychology, I would like to make a recommendation for
improving the usability of Winmerge.


This was brought up in the past on the bug-tracker, but the issue is
now 6 years old:

I was just reviewing a project and was surprised to see that
directories that I expected to be different were identical. I
double-checked everything and verified my comparison filters, then
restarted the program and compared again...



Eventually I realized that I just didn't notice the difference - it
became evident when I went to the menu  and unchecked 'show
identical'. 

The problem can be resolved by adding a colour highlight as an
additional cognitive aid:

Why the current implementation is not perfect:
- lengths of the texts are identical
- the icon contours are identical too

There is no visual clue that helps you see things better; one is
forced to parse the whole picture at the logical layer in order to
grasp the meaning of the displayed information - which takes more
time.

At the bottom of the picture I showed a "normalized" version that
simulates what a person perceives at a cognitive level in the first
moments of seeing the picture. Once the text is blurred and the icon
content and colour are ignored - everything is absolutely identical.


Based on the above, I would recommend
- adding a colour highlight
- rewording the text to make it
  - shorter: "text files are identical" -> "identical"
  - different: "identical" -> "equal"

This way, when you look at a column like this, the length of the text
is an  additional aid:

Yes, I acknowledge that the current solution works - go to 'View' and
uncheck 'show identical files', but this is an action that
- takes extra clicks
- still some people fall into the trap, even though they are long-time
  users





I also have some recommendations for visualizing left/right-only
differences. If someone is willing to listen to me, I will happily
prepare some sketches to illustrate the point.

natively, then I loved more when I see the plans to remake using Qt. I

I've used Astyle (be sure to use 2.0 or later) in several projects and 
although I don't personally like all the style choices it does it is 
anyway consistent on them. So when everybody uses Astyle the coding 
style is consistent over codebase. And it also can convert EOL style 
etc. Remenber to use the scripts (runastyle.bat and runastyle.sh) to run it.

Great, the isn't complete (when they are?) but hopefully explains the 
basic ideas what we want to do. Then there is some discussions on the 
WinMerge sf.net phpBB forum

I don't care if we use this mailing list or the phpBB forum. For me 
personally mailing list is more practical but I know lots of people

Yep. We've had many plans but very little has gone into any real work.

The very basic question is what that "WinMerge 3" would be. I've seen 
people listing (and wanting) all kinds of features. Now the problem is 
somebody must have time to implement them. And I don't realistically 
expect suddenly lots of people appear and start hacking WinMerge (3). So 
I think the realistic plan would be to not have too big plans but some 
simple outline what we want to do and what people can do. We can forget 
(and must forget) e.g. feature parity with WinMerge 2.x. It won't 
happen. It would be stupid to even try to clone WinMerge 2.x again.

What we need is to get the good ideas from WinMerge 2.x what users like 
and implement them in modern way to WinMerge 3. I don't want to see some 
90'ish GUI with small buttons, long menus etc.

Second thing is the critical view to the architecture. And get it right 
from the beginning. Basically plan the architecture to be flexible 
enough to not set too tight constraints what we can do later on. So 
avoid error we made with WinMerge 2.x plugins... As small detail, I've 
thought about using Qt(creator's) plugin system. And even dreamed about 
using Qt creator's editor component etc. There's a lot of good stuff 
already implemented...

editor and its implementation before you run into implementing it. Have 
you read the wiki in bitbucket? Or discussions at sourceforge forum?

- f9a030a1e6b0 (EOL conversion file): I don't want to pull this. Latest 
versions of Astyle can enforce code file EOL style. Nothing prevents you 
from using it but I don't want to enforce everybody to use it.

- 6fc42c709e2b (Removing unused variables to clean up build warnings.): 
Maybe. It changes the XDiff code which is external library... I'd rather 
not modify it, not for fixing minor warning. We need to update that 
library later on and edits mean we need to merge them. Might be trivial, 
might be headache. Not forgetting that perhaps we after all want to use 
something else than xdiff...

[Winmerge-development] Contributing to WinMerge 3

Greetings List,

I'm going to start participating in the development effort for
WinMerge 3. To that end, I've raised a couple of tickets in the
BitBucket issues page and I've begun implementing them.
In the interim, I have a 2 commits that I'd like added to the WinMerge
repository. Could someone pull them from my personal WinMerge
repository? I think the pull request will look something like:

hg pull https://you...@bi.../philipgoh/WinMerge-PG

I'm going to continue working on these tickets, and it would be nice
to know that my changes are going to get accepted. If the format is
not acceptable, any constructive comments would be welcome.
