I restored the config files from a previous installation - same version, but different version of the O.S. System says "Mandrake Linux 10.0" Detected Operating System "Generic Linux 2.6" Check "Update Webmin to use detected OS" this is the result: Error - Perl execution failed Undefined subroutine &main::detect_operating_system called at /usr/libexec/webmin/usermin/change_os.cgi line 15. You've got a good point there .. I should really allow Virtualmin's internal configurations to be backed up by the Backup Config Files module as well. I will add this in future.. - Jamie On Thu, 2005-10-06 at 03:54, Thomas Leavitt wrote: > Hallelujah! That did it. Hallelujah! That did it. Totally painless (would be nice if you could get the webmin Backup Configuration Files option to back up VirtualMin as well. Folks - Webmin saved my butt. Had all my important configuration files backed up to my local PC and on another hard drive on the machine. Was able to recover vastly easier, without stressing about extracting stuff from a dying hard drive. Using Webmin's recovery features for Webmin itself was painless. There is three things that causes the eratic behavior. Screwed up Cache which I think you've already purge, pressing the back button when you are reading a message instead of pressing the return to mailbox botton at the top or bottom of the email screen, and lastly if she receives a new message at the exact time she is going back into her mailbox it shifts the list. Best bet remove the entries from her book and recreate them. -Jesse On 5/Oct/2005 09:00 Suspect wrote .. > What are the requirements for being on the user council? > > Thanks, > > Tommy > > Today pcu...@op... was all like: > ** Hi, > ** I'm Paul Cubbage, Evangelist for Open Country (OC), sponsors of Webmin. > ** OC is working with Jamie on ways to improve Webmin but the user > ** community is the only real source for changing things. Hi Thomas, All the information about virtual servers known to virtualmin can be found in the /etc/webmin/virtual-server/domains directory. If you don't restore that, the virtual web/dns domains will still continue to operate, but virtualmin won't know about them.. If you have lost that directory, the only option is to re-import each domain using virtualmin's import feature.. - Jamie |

Webmin very nicely recovered my backed up usermin and webmin users and configuration. However, it is unclear whether the extra modules (to manage clamav and amavis-new were backed up), and I don't see an option to recover my virtualmin configuration. I was able, however, to recover everything in /etc/ from the crashed hard drive (IBM Deathstar, "click of death", argh). If I need to, I can probably recover other stuff (although it gets dicier each time, the head gets stuck easily). Unfortunately, I did a diff -r of the recovered /etc/webmin directory and the production /etc/webmin directory, both running 1.230 and I don't see anything to indicate where the virtualserver configuration information would be stored? Recreating and reconfiguring 100 domains manually would be a real PITA... although, if that's all that I have left to do, I can live with it. Thomas |

Hi, I'm Paul Cubbage, Evangelist for Open Country (OC), sponsors of Webmin. OC is working with Jamie on ways to improve Webmin but the user community is the only real source for changing things. I'm conducting an informal survey to find out the things the Webmin Community might like to have or find useful. What if anything do you, the users want for Webmin? New features? Interface changes? Webmin T-shirts and other swag? Please let me know One suggestion I've made is to create a Webmin Wiki. If I get positive a response on the list, I will create a Wiki. Is anyone interested in being on a User Council for Webmin or Open Country? Cheers, Paul Cubbage Evangelist Open Country, Inc. 1301 Shoreway Rd #211 Belmont, CA 94002 408-472-1112(M) |

... what I'm really asking about is webmin itself... if I was running 1.230 before, can the webmin files in /etc/ and the usermin files in /etc/ be recovered straight up, off the old machine (since the new one will have the same IP addrs and hostname)? Hi Thomas, Since you have upgraded to a new version of your OS (and subsequently new versions of all of your applications), I would advise you proceed with caution and restore only the files you need. The configuration file backup is extremely useful in a situation where you are restoring from a system backup and want to get the latest version of your configuration files (and in this case you can just unroll the tarball right into /etc and expect everything to work fine). Or, it can be used as a "butt saver" as you've discovered, in case you screw up a working configuration...in that case you pull out the one bad file. In your case, however, a wholesale configuration file overwrite with old versions will be quite calamitous (OK, probably only for some files...but knowing which files is where the fun comes in). If I were in your situation, I would restore into a temporary directory, make a backup copy of the "new" /etc directory, and then copy in the files for each service, one at a time. Restart the service, test it as thoroughly as you can, and then move on to the next. I'm betting theres only a few (maybe a dozen) files in /etc that actually need to be restored--most of my full-service (web, mail, database, Subversion, etc.) servers have about that many. Of course, some services put data elsewhere, which is simply lost if you don't have a backup. Databases store data and much configuration in /var, for example. Hope this helps. Well, I didn't do a filesystem backup... that doesn't really work on an active/root filesystem (at least that's my experience). What I did was a configuration file backup (which actually saved my butt about 15 minutes later when I stomped an apache config file, which is why i did it). So, I have tmp/backup-config-manifests and the full /etc/ and thus etc/webmin and etc/usermin ... what I'm looking for, is what do I do now? Just copy everything back into /etc/ ? Enter webmin Click on 'System' Click on 'FileSystem Backup' If you used webmin to make them, they will all be there. I use webmin to do a level 0 once a week, and a level 9 the rest of the= time. I've recovered lost files this way many times, and it really does work= great. On the other hand, if you just used the dump command without webmin, you= will have to use the restore command. My root filesystem ate itself over the weekend (IBM "Deathstar" "click of death"). I've decided to go ahead and install the latest version of the operating system (since my system was two full revisions back of this, and for other reasons). Fortunately, I configured Webmin's backup module, so all my configuration files are saved. I've installed webmin 1.230 from the noarch.rpm (previously, it was installed from a tarball). Can someone please point me to a document explaining how to recover (if there is such a thing)? Hi Rob,
That is odd, because I thought I made that change in my code ... perhaps I released a slightly older version by accident. Well, it will definately be fixed in the next Usermin release :-)

Hi Jamie i do now but i am waiting for confirmation that my APC port will respond to power off / on just in case it locks up again. when i updated the quota pre the new version my servers Load Average went thru the roof making the server unreachable. as the server has been stable for 207 days i can only point the finger at the old quota module. i will let you know what happens later today. Hi Mark, This definately looks like an internal Perl bug to me, rather than a problem with Webmin ... although I have never seen it before. There are files in /var/named/ for the virtual hosts that virtualmin created. I don't know what changed my named.conf but everything is still working. The 'Set up DNS zone' is checked by default, but I don't have a template setup in the 'Server Template', never did. Everything has always worked out of the box.
