Hi, Users logging into to NIS clients will not show up here, as it only lists= logins to the system Webmin is running on. This is because the user list= is taken from the 'last' command output, which reads the local wtmp file= . As far as I know, there is no way of listing logins to all NIS client sys= tems from a single command. - Jamie -----Original Message----- From: "Madhurjya P. Hi Grant, On FreeBSD, Webmin uses the command ping -c 1 -t 1 192.168.0.7 to check the host, and then looks at it's exit status. If it is exiting with status 0 (meaning OK) even when the host is down, then this is a problem .. - Jamie On Tue, 2006-03-07 at 06:39, Grant Peel wrote: > I suppose the next time the server to be monitored goes down, I can try > pinging it and sending you the output, but I hope it does not happen! > > Here is the ping results from the server running the ping command to the > server to be monitored, from the command line of course. > > Yes, FreeBSD 5.4 > > defiant# ping -c 1 192.168.0.7 > PING 192.168.0.7 (192.168.0.7): 56 data bytes > 64 bytes from 192.168.0.7: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.325 ms > > --- 192.168.0.7 ping statistics --- > 1 packets transmitted, 1 packets received, 0% packet loss > round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.325/0.325/0.325/0.000 ms > defiant# > > -GRant > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Jamie Cameron" <jca...@we...> > To: <web...@li...> > Sent: Monday, March 06, 2006 7:13 AM > Subject: Re: [webmin-l] Host Is Down > > > > Webmin doesn't actually use the output from the ping command - instead, > > it either checks the exit status of the ping command (0 for success or 1 > > for failure), or sends its own UDP ping packets. > > > > By the way, which OS are you using there? I have just used Webmin to add some subzones for testing purposes and I discovered some behaviour that I found 'interesting'. First, I am running Bind 9.2.4 on Centos 4.2. It is running Chrooted. I am logged into Webmin as root If I select 'edit Config file', it brings up /etc/named.conf instead of /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf When I created a new master zone, it put the zone file in /var/named/chroot/var/named (gee, I thought it was suppose to go into /var/named/chroot/etc? Of course I may have this one wrong). But in named.conf (and it did edit the one in /var/named/chroot/etc it specified the file location as: /var/named/zone.file, not /var/named/chroot/var/named/... Next I have put all of my zone file definitions in named.custom and have a include "/etc/named.custom" in named.conf (which is really in /var/named/chroot/etc/). I would really like to have all these added zones also go into named.custom. |

That is odd - it certainly should be able to. Which version of Webmin are you trying to install there? If it is not the latest, you should try 1.260. Webmin doesn't actually use the output from the ping command - instead, it either checks the exit status of the ping command (0 for success or 1 for failure), or sends its own UDP ping packets. By the way, which OS are you using there? Yes, the restore function uses the same code as normal alias creation, both of which run 'newaliases'. At least, they do in the most recent version of Virtualmin (2.610). > Obviously, I have never had a problem when creating directly within > Virtualmin for an existing or new account. > > Again, this was while moving accounts from one server to another. Does the 'Restore' function run newaliases? This was where what appeared in the aliases file was not activated. And yes, this was for mailboxes forwarded to multiple accounts, so everything I'm talking about is with regards to the aliases file/tables on a CentOS/Sendmail system. Obviously, I have never had a problem when creating directly within Virtualmin for an existing or new account. Again, this was while moving accounts from one server to another. You had asked me to let you know if I found any surprises. But, one might argue that even on the same machine, one could backup a virtuser, delete everything to do with that account and then restore that backup. If it were a complete delete, the aliases would be gone, upon restore it looks like the aliases are created, but newaliases not run? Yeah, I know I'm outside of the scope of the intention of the backup/restore functions.. but darn.. if it is so close to working perfectly, this is a godsend. Another question. Can you think of anything that would be broken within Webmin when moving to an upgraded server? For instance CentOS 3.x to CentOS 4.x, when I'm using the same basic directory/storage layouts. Hi all, I am having troubles with a server, and have tried to add a monitor in the System and Server status Module. The system being monitored is freezing solid. Hi John, That is quite surprising, as Virtualmin does run newaliases after every alias is created or modified. However, there was one thing I didn't understand about your bug report - all Virtualmin mail aliases have an entry in /etc/mail/virtusertable , and possibly one in /etc/aliases too in forwarding to multiple destinations. Did you create these aliases using only the Virtualmin module? - Jamie |

I pointed out that was possible... not easy ;) the question is... why do you need to give your users ssh access? Then, from there we can look for the best way to go... for webhosting I don't see any need at all to give ssh access... more over when we have webmin/usermin/virtualmin!!!!... that gives us a very nice ACL! if you still need a jail or chroot.. then you need to decide which tools your users can have... and you can replicate the directory structure of your binaries and libraries under /home/myuser/ (kind of /home/myuser/bin, /home/myuser/local/bin, /home/myuser/local/lib, and so on, plus /home/myuser/etc), and then you hard link the binaries and libraries you need... (kind of ln /bin/binary.prog /home/myuser/bin/). (perhaps a better way is to compile from source the binaries you need... indicating a path of /skell as the main directory in the ./Configure of each compilation... and then you can directly do something like cp -al /skell /home/myuser/) yes.. I know.. we could still have problems with some libraries!!!!.. but it should work for some basic ones, and probably it should be possible to create something that would allow some basic functioning for irc bots, and manipulating some cgi-bin scripts from the shell in any case..... before you do anything, you do need to know why you want to give your users ssh access.... even with chroot, it's easier to find holes and crack root from a shell!... in which case at least they will be able to change the libraries and binaries (and because they are hard linked.. then it changes in the whole server).. and eventually even free themselves from the jail... In the other hand... if you are in a situation where your users need to have access to a shell... and your main concern is that they should not be able to be around the homes of other users... well... that's why we have permissions ;) (modes) Cheers! Personally, I wouldn't install that way but that is a personal preference. I generally install from tarballs - even though the last 2 or 3 versions of tarball fail to install the redhat sysV script (and so I might change my ways). If you install webmin from 'dag' repository, you automatically get perl-Net-SSLeay and any other dependencies installed (I don't really any other dependencies) and dag repository will take care of updates each time you yum update - which is probably the best of all worlds - especially since the dag repository has fixed the issues he had with updates in his first few webmin packages. anyway...this may be useful # rpm -q \ --whatprovides /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.5/Authen/SASL/Perl.pm perl-Authen-SASL-2.09-1.2.el4.rf try 'yum install perl-Authen-SASL' Craig |

Jamie, Using the backup and restore functions to move hosting accounts.... I think I found one small bug that could be considered a bug in the script as a whole. I have reproduced this problem a total of one time and don't know yet if this was some sort of exception. If the domain being transferred has any aliased email addresses in the aliases table, not the virtusertable, it seems that newaliases is not run? Opening the 'Edit Mail Aliases' module within Virtualmin, selecting the alias which is already written and saving it corrects the issue. I would imagine doing the same from the Sendmail Aliases module would have the same results but I haven't tried that.... yet. I suppose this could possibly even be an issue when restoring an account on the same machine, if in fact the alias had been removed and newaliases run? Reporting in on my successes as requested sir! Best and Thanks, John Hinton |
