Ok, but what if I wanted to create a whole new module out of it? Is this possible? Your best option would be to copy the module directory to a new name, (making sure to copy /etc/webmin/modulename as well) and then grant yourself access to the copy rather than to the original. That way when webmin is upgraded it will leave the copy alone and only upgrade the original directory .. - Jamie |

Well, I did this but it appears to only make a symlink to the original one. If I go ahead and update, the whole thing will get overwritten with the new version. I would expect cloning to make copies but it doesnt seem to do so. I have made some changes to the code that I dont want to lose when I update. Is there a way I can export that module in its current state and rename it to a different module? THat way, when I update, the main module can be updated while my "exported" module remains the same. Thank you! Hope this makes sense. -- Terry Davis Systems Administrator BirdDog Solutions, Inc. I have been trying to get the cluster useradmin to work. I have checked the code because only the "this server" entry is displayed but @servers contains the three entries that are in my webmin servers /etc/webmin/server/*.serv files. Any directional help would be very helpfull Bob Teeter |

I've tried the issue fast RPC > calls option(not sure what it does), but to no avail. Not really .. the server links are rather slow, as every HTTP request has to be passed through a cgi program which logs into the remote webmin server. The speed is usually tolerable though.. > Some pages didn't even load fully (from modules created by my > company). These are normal html pages with tables. Any ideas what may cause > this? Sorry for the lack of information here, as I have no idea what info I > can give. The problem is most likely that the HTML re-writing done by the program that fetches pages from the linked server is messing up your custom module's HTML somehow. Would it be possible for you to email me HTML from one of the pages that is not appearing properly, taken from a normal login to the linked server? - Jamie |

Hi, thanks for the tip, Mr Cooper and Mr Cameron. I tried the Servers module, and I noticed that within my home network (low traffic),where I did the testing, it was pretty slow when I accessed webmin server B through webmin server A, where the Servers module is installed. Is there a way to hasten the speed? I've tried the issue fast RPC calls option(not sure what it does), but to no avail. Some pages didn't even load fully (from modules created by my company). These are normal html pages with tables. Any ideas what may cause this? Sorry for the lack of information here, as I have no idea what info I can give. Thanks for reading. Eric |

Webmin can sort of do what you want today, but not exactly. If you set up all of your servers in the Webmin:Servers module, and include login information for each, you can configure all of them by 'logging in' to only one. However, you'll have to switch between them on the Servers page. To do what you envision will require some customization. There are a few ways to do it, I think--the easiest being to create a new page on the main Webmin index that lists your 'Favorites' that link directly to the other Servers pages you need (i.e. Apache on machine1, Postfix on machine2, etc.). You'll have to get the links from the Webmin Servers page--they look something like this: http://delilah:10000/servers/link.cgi/989449045/apache/ I'm not sure exactly how much work it would be to do that though... eb...@so... wrote: > Hi all, > > We have a few servers that have webmin running on them, each controlling > different services. > > I'd like to set up a server that can centrally manage all the other webmin > boxes, ie by accessing this one server and logging in once, I can click on > a postfix icon for example and access the webmin box in charge of postfix. > > Problem is that, how do I make it such that after I click on the postfix > icon on the central server, it will auto login to the postfix webmin box > (assuming same user and password as central) so I don't have to log in > again? > > Thanks for reading, and regards. > > (Hope webadmin-devel is indeed the correct place to post this, if not, my > apologies) > > Eric -- Joe Cooper <jo...@sw...> http://www.swelltech.com Web Caching Appliances and Support |

Just add a new server with the remote username and password specified, then you can click on the server icon to connect to it without having to login. That way you can have one server (that you login to) with icons for all of your other servers, which you can then auto-login to. - Jamie |

Hi all, We have a few servers that have webmin running on them, each controlling different services. I'd like to set up a server that can centrally manage all the other webmin boxes, ie by accessing this one server and logging in once, I can click on a postfix icon for example and access the webmin box in charge of postfix. Problem is that, how do I make it such that after I click on the postfix icon on the central server, it will auto login to the postfix webmin box (assuming same user and password as central) so I don't have to log in again? Thanks for reading, and regards. (Hope webadmin-devel is indeed the correct place to post this, if not, my apologies) Eric |

I use Postfix and love it. I want to learn Majordomo, but the Webmin interface looks for Sendmail config files. Is there a way to point it to a postfix config file? Or make it independent of Sendmail? |

I'd be interested in hearing your ideas. I'm fairly green with Perl, but I have some ideas on what changes are needed as well. I'd also like to see some more record types in the module (eg. SRV, LOC). My basic plan would entail: Continue using present "edit and restart" model for all zones lacking allow-update clauses in their descriptions. For dynamic zones, the record editor submits a dynamic update using either nsupdate or the Net::DNS module. For dynamic zones, the zone display uses a zone transfer, not the local zone file, to populate the page. This insures that the page reflects the server's current in-memory state. I haven't updated in a few versions, but when last I looked at this code, I recall seeing some duplication of effort in some of the record handling code that could be factored into a separate routine. The two pieces of code I looked at were very similar but not identical, a clear maintenance hazard. |

Hi there, First of all, i would like to congratulate the developers of this great piece of software, Webmin. Unix Systems missed something like this. Second, and the reason i made myself member of this mailling list, is about BIND 8 and 9 Module. I'm the DNS Administrator for the company i work for, and we use Webmin to manage our Linux Systems. Some Linux Boxes are our DNS Servers, using Bind 8 and 9 versions. But we recently faced a little problem, regarding using the Bind 8 Module when we activated Dynamic Updates. It's well known that Dynamic Updates is incompatible with Manual editing the zone files. So we faced this problem: 1) don't use the Webmin to manage the Bind service and use Dynamic Zones 2) or, don't use Dynamic Zones and use Webmin. But the real problems is, our network has Windows 2000 Servers with Active Directory requesting Dynamic Updates on DNS Servers (Argh!!!). So i started to find some way around to give me the chance to use Webmin and Dynamic Updates....and i found it! :-) Now that's the other problem :-/ I used to be a programmer, but i'm no longer one has i used to be or liked to be. I can understand almost any programming language, and i can make little hacks, has long has no deep knowledge of that language isn't needed. So here's the fact i'm writing to this mailing list. Theoricaly, i know how to modify the Bind 8 Module of Webmin to work with Dynamic Update Zones, but i don't have enought knowledge of Perl language to make the necessary changes of the Module....ok i lie, i could make it, i think, but i would have to learn Perl from the bottom up and then get started, reading manuals, writing sample scripts,etc...but don't have time. :-( So i'm here requesting for help of the "Webmin - Bind 8 Module" author. If you, or someone else, are able to "work" in Bind 8 Module to the point of making the necessary changes to the module for next generations of ISC Bind service using Dynamic Updates, i can give you all the information you need to make it happen. It's quite simple indeed... Thanks in advance, and keep up with the good work. - Regards, Hugo Monteiro mail to: hug...@li... So I'm really liking Activestate's Komodo debugger, but a cannot get remote perl debug working. Not a big deal as the CGI portion is more important. So it says to add some lines to the httpd.conf... oh man, now it should really work... right? Umm... where's the httpd.conf? Oh... yeah... This is webmin... So my question is, where in webmin would I add the following line that I would add into the httpd.conf? SetEnv PERLDB_OPTS RemotePort=hostname:9010 CallKomodo=client:9000 PrintRet=0 Thanks for any help... SteveB |

Remote functions are supposed to be able to return arrays, but due to a bug
in webmin that I just discovered a zero-length array will not be returned
properly if in non-fast RPC mode. The simple solution if all your servers
are webmin 0.90 or later is to go into Webmin Servers, click on the called
server and change it to fast RPC mode.
I'll fix this bug properly in the next release ..

One way you could do this is to have your module's index.cgi script start
with code like :
eval { use bubba; }
if ($@) {
&error("Perl module bubba is not installed");
}
You could even have the error message include a link to
/cpan/download.cgi?source=3&cpan=bubba to automatically download and
install the module from CPAN.
In the next webmin release, I will add support for a new line in the
module.info file like perldepends=bubba Archive::Tar so that these can be
caught at module install time.

The "Webmin Modules" documentation & example code indicate that there is no
restriction on return value types from remote_foreign_call() but I am
getting some odd behaviour when calling a remote function which returns an
array as opposed to an array reference. The following code fragments
illustrate what I am seeing:
---------------------------------------------------
# The following two functions are in a module on host #1 :
sub remote_function1()
{
# create an empty array.
@empty_array1 = ();
# return the empty array.
return(@empty_array1);
}
sub remote_function2()
{
# create an empty array.
@empty_array2 = ();
# return a REFERENCE to the empty array.
return(\@empty_array2);}
}
-------------------------------------------------
# The following function is in a module on host #2 and calls the
# two remote functions on host #1:
sub sandbox()
{
@array1 = &remote_foreign_call(some_server, some_module, remote_function1);
$length_array1 = scalar(@array1);
$ref_array2 = &remote_foreign_call(some_server, some_module,
remote_function2);
@array2 = @$ref_array2;
$length_array2 = scalar(@array2);
}
-------------------------------------------------
Executing the function "sanbox()" above will result in $length_array1 == 1
(WRONG), while $length_array2 == 0 (CORRECT). Why the descrepency? Should
functions called via remote_foreign_call() always return references? I am
new to Perl, but the serialize/unserialize_variable() functions in
web-lib.pl suggest that only references to arrays & hashes are supported.

I am writing a webmin module that requires that user have loaded
use strict;
use diagnostics;
use warnings;
use CGI qw(:standard);
use Archive::Tar;
use URI::Escape;
use bubba; # <-- fake mod to test
Webmin can specify the need for other webmin modules due to dependencies
during load, but does not seem to be able to care about required perl mods.
Hence, use bubba fails UGLY. Is there a way to do a 'use bubba or die("you
need to load the bubba perl module")'...? Or something like it? The
'require' keyword does not do it either.
Thanx... SteveB
