I have to ensure that a user knows that 3 perl mods are needed for a webmin module I am working on. Is there a standard way to check like wemin mod depends? Or should I program it to gracefully fail after install and inform the user then? SteveB |

I am politely cross-posting to see if anyone on the dev side can answer this... Mark, I am NOT particularly adept at javascript and the DOM, and I have looked and tried, but to no avail. Try posting to javascript groups. Essentially you are asking how to use javascript to get the DOM to put focus on a single java applet, but due to the way webmin loads the index.cgi page, you do not have any way of affecting the line <body onLoad="javascript:document.appletname.focus();"> without affecting all of your pages due to it being a shared header. The line that I just used may or may not be very close to what is needed, but it may be a start. Post the answer if you get it working, please. Generally, yes .. for example, I have already implemented queue management and support for editing users/assign, and they will be included in the next webmin release. One feature that may be tricky is viewing user mailboxes, as unlike sendmail qmail doesn't seem to standard location for user mail files. Or does everyone just stick with ~/Mailbox ? - Jamie |

For the users & aliases, it should be fairly trivial to interface with LDAP--You just enable LDAP in /etc/nsswitch.conf and run 'getent' (assuming you're using a Linux/glibc-based system) and you've got your files. The Apache virts and BIND stuff would be more difficult, but probably not terribly hard. I don't even configure Apache anymore for virtual hosts; I use mod_vhost_alias and mod_rewrite and it's done; this works for all but about 3% of our clients. For BIND, I basically share one zone file between all zones, so when I have to renumber or change something, I have fewer changes to make. That shouldn't be hard to do in LDAP either. >=20 > For performance reasons and easier maintainability and mobility (because= =20 > we'll hopefully be managing quite large hosting environments from a=20 > single master server) I'd like to be able to freely migrate between=20 > flat-files and a database back-end, and LDAP is a quite suitable form of= =20 > database for this purpose. Yeah, I can imagine. I've been meaning to take a look at similar stuff myself for a while. Getting users & groups out of flat files and into LDAP is a big first step (I've set it up before at other companies, but before I've managed those things directly. Now I have other people who will be managing it, so I need a easier interface than GQ or LDAP_Explorer for them.) I'm hoping to actually be able to consolidate some of our existing accounting functions with LDAP, although I suspect our accounting software won't handle it. Wil --=20 W. Reilly Cooley wc...@na... I haven't mapped out all of the data that will go into LDAP yet, but I expect quite a lot of it will--for the first 'useful' version I'd like to simply do things in the traditional way (with a few additions): Apache virts, BIND records in normal flat-files, users in the flat-file passwd, and Sendmail/Postfix aliases set up also in a flat-file. For performance reasons and easier maintainability and mobility (because we'll hopefully be managing quite large hosting environments from a single master server) I'd like to be able to freely migrate between flat-files and a database back-end, and LDAP is a quite suitable form of database for this purpose. It will be more than user information, but that's a good start--we'll be attaching to each username (where username==hosting customer name) virtual host info for all of their sites, DNS info, mail aliases, backup schedule and targets, monthly recurring service costs, maintenence schedule, redundancy and failover rules, /their/ virtual customers, etc. It's all very complicated, and I haven't enough hours in the day to even get a start on this stuff, but it'll happen sometime... -- Joe Cooper <jo...@sw...> http://www.swelltech.com Web Caching Appliances and Support |

(One of the things I wanted was the ability to remotely create home directories...) I haven't done nearly enough LDAP or Webmin programming to say that I can certainly pull this off, but I'm hopeful. What sort of things are you looking for for your virtual hosting? I've thought for a long time that it would be very cool if someone would write a mod_config_ldap, where Apache would pull configuration from an LDAP server. I don't think it would be terribly hard to map the Apache configuration directives into LDAP objects & attributes, but it'd be a hell of a lot of work considering how many there are. Wil --=20 W. Hi,=20 I've written a little module to teach myself about the internals of Webmin, especially the RPC stuff. So, I wrote one that presents the user with a list of users (from user-lib.pl:list_users) and a list of configured Webmin hosts and allows him to create a home directory for the user, based on the configuration on the remote host (user's GID, home directory path, skel path, etc). But rather than being useful just as a user module, I thought it might also be useful to other module writers. (Me, in particular.) You can pull it down from here: http://nakedape.cc/~wcooley/src/create_homedir.wbm I'd like to get other people's input on what I could improve. ACLs are what I'm planning to implement next. I'm planning a fairly ambitious module I'm calling "Directory Manager", which will allow one to administer users, groups, hosts, and other things managed through the name-service switch. Initially, I'm going to make it work just with LDAP, since that's what I'm interested in, but I'm hoping to make it modular enough that people will add db, postgres, mysql support as necessary. (I'm planning to reuse some of the work that's already gone into creating ldap-user utilities.) Wil --=20 W. Reilly Cooley wc...@na... I've written a module mainly intended for remote operation, and it works just fine with Fast RPC turned off, but remote_foreign_require() returns a "false" value when I try to use it with Fast RPC turn on. What's the difference? There isn't any help on the server config page, nor could I find anything in the FAQ. Wil --=20 W. Reilly Cooley wc...@na... Hi, I have webmin installed in about 25 sites and so far none of the sites have had any major problems. We use Webmin to provide remote support to our client servers and to help our users handle some system functions themselves without having to resort to contacting our organization. One of the handy things is being able to restrict an individual to a specific function/module like printer administration. BTW. Our clients do not have any systems people on site, they are all office staff that use webmin. Unless I'm reading the code for my_getpwent wrong (and I may be, I haven't seriously programming in Perl for a long time), it doesn't seem that it supports looking up and returning the information for a particular user. I just wrote code that called the useradmin/user-lib.pl:list_users subroutine and poked through the entire array until it found the right user... This is fine until I start doing it with remote_foreign_* calls instead of just foreign_* and start dealing with thousands of users... So, it'd be nice to have a my_getpwent that just returns a hash for a particular user, to avoid lots of network copying. Wil --=20 W. Reilly Cooley wc...@na... Hrm, I am not seeing secondary groups then..........here is my code mr perl god. :) These are just the relavent parts..... #!/usr/bin/perl use Net::LDAP; use Mail::Sendmail; $action = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_ACTION' }"; $username = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_USER' }"; $uid = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_UID' }"; $name = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_REAL' }"; $home = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_HOME' }"; $shell = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_SHELL' }"; $pass = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_PASS' }"; $group = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_USER' }"; $group2 = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_SECONDARY' }"; if ( $action eq 'CREATE_USER' ){ my %mail = ( To => 'ad...@bi...', From => 'te...@bi...', Message => "$group,$group2" ); sendmail(%mail) or die $Mail::Sendmail::error; create_user(); exit 0; } That email contains nothing........except the main group name....no secondary groups. Thank you! Secondary groups can be gotten from $ENV{'USERADMIN_SECONDARY'}, and on systems where a new group is created for the new user, it's name will be the same as $ENV{'USERADMIN_USER'} and it's GID will be $ENV{'USERADMIN_GID'} - Jamie Terry Davis wrote: > > Yes, I am seeing stuff in: > $action = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_ACTION' }"; > $username = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_USER' }"; > $uid = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_UID' }"; > $name = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_REAL' }"; > $home = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_HOME' }"; > $shell = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_SHELL' }"; > $pass = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_PASS' }"; > > Sorry about the assignments, I am being lazy, you get the point though. :) > > I am seeing values in all of those fields. Yes, I am seeing stuff in: $action = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_ACTION' }"; $username = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_USER' }"; $uid = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_UID' }"; $name = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_REAL' }"; $home = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_HOME' }"; $shell = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_SHELL' }"; $pass = "$ENV{ 'USERADMIN_PASS' }"; Sorry about the assignments, I am being lazy, you get the point though. :) I am seeing values in all of those fields. I do see the members of the group though as you said. Here is what I was looking for. When I create a new user, under Redhat, you create a new group of that username. I want that stored in an ENV var somehow as well as any secondary groups that are selected on that screen as well. Thank you! -- Terry Davis Systems Administrator BirdDog Solutions, Inc. The problem here is that when webmin's webserver runs a perl script (like one of the cgi programs), it captures and redirects STDOUT in perl so that it can be parsed for perl headers and so on. This works fine for all IO done in perl (print statements and the like), but if your perl script runs another program that outputs stuff, it will not work. The solution is to do : print "foo<br>\n"; open(OUT, "echo bar |"); while(<OUT>) { print; } close(OUT); print "baz<br>"; - Jamie |
