[webmin-announce] Virtualmin 3.55 released

Hi Virtualmin users,

Virtualmin GPL version 3.55 is now available for download from
http://www.webmin.com/virtualmin.html . New features in this
version include :

 - Ported the migrate-domain.pl script from Virtualmin Pro, which
   allows migration from cPanel, Plesk and Ensim at the command line.
 - When migrating a domain from other control panel like Plesk, you
   can now select to have to downloaded directly from a remote FTP or
   SSH server. The migrate-domain.pl command-line script also allows use
   of ftp:// or ssh:// URLs for backup sources.
 - If the skeleton directory contains a public_html sub-directory, it is
   copied to a sub-domain's web pages directory when the domain is created.
 - For alias domains whose virtusers are always copied from the target, no
   home directory is created (as it isn't needed).
 - The path to the public_html and cgi-bin directories is now stored in
   each new domain's data file, so that they are correctly preserved when
   the path is changed in the template, or the domain is moved to another
   system with a different directory name.
 - Basic Exim support, thanks to Bill Moyers and John Gray.
 - When migrating a cPanel, Plesk or Ensim backup, the original domain name
   can now be worked out automatically, as long as the backup contains
   just one.
 - For new installs, new features in older versions are not shown on the
   System Information page.
 - Fixed the modification of Webalizer and Logrotate config files when a
   domain's Apache logs are outside it's home directory.
 - Apache logs outside a domain's home directory are now included in backups
   and restores.
 - Ported the delete-user.pl command-line script from the Pro version.
 - Added the --delete-existing flag to migrate-domain.pl, to remove any
   existing virtual server with the same name before re-migrating.
 - The background collectinfo.pl cron job can be run less frequently or
   disabled using a new Module Config page option.
 - Ported the Move Virtual Server feature from the Pro version, which allows
   domains to be moved under different parents or converted from sub-servers
   to top-level.
 - Ported the Module Config option to preload Virtualmin libraries from the
   Pro version, which can speed up the web-based UI. This is not enabled by
   default on regular manual installs though.

[webmin-announce] Webmin 1.410 and Usermin 1.340 released

Hi everyone,

Webmin version 1.410 is now available for download from
http://www.webmin.com/ and mirror sites. This release includes
the following major changes :

 - Big Czech translation updates, thanks to Petr Vanek and the
   Czech translation team.
 - Many Dutch updates, thanks to Gandyman.
 - XSS protection in all Webmin popup windows, which allows a
   bug fix that was preventing them from appearing in IE.
 - Per-Webmin-user control over password changes and support for
   temporary passwords, thanks to GE Medical Systems.
 - Fixed several bugs that prevented bandwidth monitoring from
   working properly on FreeBSD and OSX.
 - Various LDAP client, server and users module fixes.
 - The MySQL and PostgreSQL modules now have an option to show only
   DB and table names, which speeds up their display on systems with
   many of each.
 - Request and reply header access control and cache manager password
   support in the Squid module.
 - Email, SMS and SNMP status messages sent by Webmin can now be
   customized. 

Also available is Usermin 1.340, which includes the changes :

 - The same Czech translation updates.
 - All popups in Usermin are now XSS-safe, and thus do not need
   protection from unknown referers which prevented them from working
   in some browsers (like IE).
 - All Usermin session IDs are now stored MD5 hashed, to prevent sessions
   from being captured if the sessiondb DBM is somehow read by an attacker.
 - Messages that the IMAP server indicates are flagged for deletion are now
   struck through on the mail list.
 - The icon on the mail list indicating if a message has an attachments is now
   100% accurate, rather than being based on a header check only. This will
   slightly slow down the mail list the first time it is used though.
 - If a default folder is set, move it to the top of the folder list.
 - Added reply buttons when viewing a sent message, for continuing a thread
   you last posted on.
 - Your own email address is no longer included in the CC list when replying
   to all, by default. The old behaviour can be returned using a new Preferences
   page option.
 - The Print button now opens email in a separate window so that frames don't
   appear in the printout, and the page that appears now uses standard the Usermin
   UI library.
 - The trash folder is now created and used when all folders are fetched from an
   IMAP server.
 - Fixed a bug that broke searching by message body contents.
 - In the Filter Mail module, added a filter condition to match mail with a spam
   score at or above some level. Also, if spam deletion above some level level is
   configured globally or for the user's domain, display a non-editable rule for it.

[webmin-announce] Virtualmin 3.54 released

Hi Virtualmin users,

Virtualmin GPL version 3.54 is now available for download from
http://www.webmin.com/virtualmin.html . This is mainly a bugfix
release, but there are some new features in this version :

 - Fixed bugs in Plesk migration, and added automatic detection of
   alias domains in the original backup. SSL certificates and keys
   from the backup are also migrated. Also added initial support for
   Windows Plesk backups.
 - A domain's private IP and external IP for DNS are now also included
   in SPF records.
 - Added a check for Sendmail not accepting email on the external
   interface, which is the default in some distributions.
 - When a sub-domain is created with the same name as a record in the
   parent domain, the record is not removed whem the domain is deleted.
 - When using Qmail, domains with the same name as the system's primary
   hostname (typically from the control/me file) are not longer allowed,
   as they break Virtualmin's use of the virtualdomains file.
 - When email is disabled for a domain, only MX and mail records pointing
   to the Virtualmin system or known secondaries are removed.

[webmin-announce] Virtualmin 3.53 released

Hi Virtualmin users,

Virtualmin GPL version 3.53 is now available for download from
http://www.webmin.com/virtualmin.html . This is mainly a bugfix
release, but there are some new features in this version :

 - Apache log files outside a domain's home directory are renamed
   and deleted when appropriate.
 - Hitting Stop in the browser during the creation of a virtual server
   or some other action will no longer cancel it, which prevents domains
   from being half created.
 - When the Apache virtual host *.domain exists and a new virtual host
   for something.domain is created, it is placed before *.domain in the
   Apache config file to give it precedence.
 - SSL can now be enabled for domains without a private IP address, for a
   single virtual server on each shared address. This means that on a typical
   single-IP system, you can have one SSL website.
 - The logrotate configuration is now validated by Virtualmin, to detect
   duplicate entries that can cause rotation to stop working.
 - Vpopmail systems with so many domains that letter-suffix directories under
   /home/vpopmail/domains are needed are now handed by Virtualmin.
 - When a DNS domain is disabled, all records in it that use the domain name are
   renamed too, to keep BIND happy.

I've updated this AMI yet again, to Virtualmin 3.52, Webmin 1.401 and new versions

[webmin-announce] Webmin 1.400 and Usermin 1.330 released

Hi everyone,

Webmin version 1.400 is now available for download from
http://www.webmin.com/ and mirror sites. This release includes
the following major changes :

 - Links from unknown referers are no longer allowed by default,
   to block a new class of XSS attacks.
 - Many modules have been converted to use the new Webmin UI
   library, for a more consistent look.
 - The Backup Configuration Files module can now include directories,
   and connect to FTP and SSH servers on different ports.
 - Changed the layout of the Scheduled Cron Jobs module, and added
   a search for if there are more than 100 jobs.
 - Added a second layer to the UI of the Partitions on Local Disks
   module, so that the first page shows only disks.
 - Re-designed the layout of the Logical Volume Management module,
   and fixed removal of physical devices with LVM 2.
 - Fixed login problems in the MySQL module, added searching for
   variables, added tabs to the Execute SQL page, and prevented the
   display of huge lists of databases and tables.
 - Created a dedicated page in the Sendmail module for ports and
   addresses, and added support for Maildir mail stores.
 - Added outgoing BCC mapping support to the Postfix module.
 - The BIND module now supports Windows, and can add records that already
   exist to multiple domains. 

Also available is Usermin 1.330, which includes the changes :

 - The same XSS blocking as Webmin.
 - The default From: address for autoreplies now respects the default
   address set in the user's address book.
 - Added a configuration option to the Protected Web Directories module
   to deny users the ability to add or edit protected directories.
 - The number of unread messages in each folder can be displayed using a
   new Preferences option in the 'Mail folders' section. By default this
   is only enabled for IMAP folders, as computing the unread count for other
   folder types can be slow for if they contain a large number of messages.
 - IMAP and POP3 folders can now have their logins set to be the same as the
   Usermin login.
 - When deleting or moving all messages in the search results folder, the
   original emails are correctly deleted.
 - Added warnings if a message it sent with no recipient or subject.
 - Added tabs to the Upload and Download module, and support for downloading a
   whole directory in ZIP format.
 - MySQL and PostgreSQL user-interface related settings can now be made on a
   per-user basis, rather than being global.
 - Fixed a bug in the MySQL module that could prevent logins.

Virtualmin GPL version 3.52 is now available for download from

include :

 - When restoring a virtual server that uses features not supported
   on the system, a warning will be displayed listing the missing or
   disabled features.
 - When editing a virtual server without a private IP address, one can
   be added that is associated with an existing interface on the system.
 - Website FTP access users can be created, who have the same permissions
   as a domain owner but are limited to FTP access for editing web pages.
   This feature was ported from the Pro version.
 - When a domain is restored to a system with a new IP address, the IP in
   the SPF record is updated. Also, any NS records are updated to match the
   new system.
 - When a virtual server is moved under a new owner, the Apache directives
   that control which user CGI scripts run as are properly updated.
 - Re-wrote all code that locks configuration files managed by Virtualmin.
   This improves the coverage of Webmin logging, and makes it much safer to
   perform multiple operations on the same or different domains at once.
 - Outgoing email relayed via the Virtualmin system is now counted towards
   the sender's domain's bandwidth limit, unless disabled on the Bandwidth
   Monitoring page.
 - New features in this version of Virtualmin and any plugins are shown on
   the System Information page, if using version 5.3 of the Virtualmin theme.

Virtualmin GPL version 3.51 is now available for download from

include :

 - Ported the Change IP Address page from Virtualmin Pro, which allows existing
   servers to be moved to new private or shared IPs.
 - Include the total backup time in the scheduled backup email.
 - Added back the old one-file-per-domain backup format, which is
   more friendly to rsyncing the home directory separately.
 - Moved the default quota for mailboxes to the 'Mail for domain' section
   of templates.
 - Shell special characters like ; and & are no longer allowed in mailbox
   usernames.
 - When using Postfix with the sender_bcc_maps directive, a new option on the
   Module Config page can be used to allow BCCing all sent email in some or all
   domains to a separate address. This can be set on the Email Settings page, or
   by default for new domains in Server Templates.
 - Fixed a bug that prevented mail for users with @ in their names and mbox-format
   mail files from being properly displayed on systems using Postfix.
 - When an alias domain is created, the primary domain can now update its configuration
   as needed. This allows AWstats to work when accessed via the alias domain.

Also available is version 5.2 of the Virtualmin framed theme, which I don't think
has any major changes, but I am just releasing for completeness :-)

Webmin version 1.390 is now available for download from

the following changes :

 - Added the LDAP Server module, for managing OpenLDAP and
   browsing it's database.
 - Webmin modules and help pages can be searched using a new
   field on the left frame of the default theme.
 - The BSD Firewall (IPFW) module now supports the file format
   used natively by FreeBSD's /etc/rc.conf file.
 - Support for VLANs and channel bonding on Debian, comments on
   interfaces on Redhat and alias interface bugfixes for FreeBSD,
   all in the Network Configuration module.
 - The PAM module now supports include directives, and the UI has
   been re-written.
 - More map types are supported in the Postfix module.
 - Squid proxy reply restrictions can now be managed, from a
   re-designed access control page.
 - Logged Webmin actions can now have a comment attached explaining
   why they were done.
 - All cluster modules now have an option to show hosts in a table.
 - Big contributed Italian and Catalan translation updates. 

Also available is Usermin 1.320, which includes the changes :

 - Added a search box to the left frame of the blue theme, for
   finding modules, config options, help pages and text.
 - All images, CSS and other static content served by Usermin has
   an HTTP Expires for 1 week in the future, to improve cachability.
 - Changed the error message that appears when Webmin detects a link
   from another web page.
 - Mail reading user interface cleanups, such as tabs on the address
   book page.
 - The Trash folder name can now be set using a new Preferences
   page option.
 - Inline or remote images in email can be hidden by default by a
   setting on the Preferences page, then displayed with a link on
   the Read Mail page.
 - When viewing a message you can now reply from the same page using
   the new 'Quick reply' collapsible section.
 - When mail in a Maildir format folder is marked as read or special,
   flags on the underlying filename are also updated so that the new
   status is visible to IMAP clients.

Virtualmin GPL version 3.50 is now available for download from

include :

 - Advanced autoreply options are hidden by default, to make the
   alias form less confusing.
 - Added a Module Config option to make the Unix group name for a new
   domain always follow the username, and made group name selection more
   consistent across creation methods.
 - Moved the Administration username field into the first (visible) section
   of the Create Virtual Server page.
 - Cron jobs created by Virtualmin will still be recognized even if manually
   modified to redirect output or add other pre- and post-commands.
 - Alias mail domains can now be implemented by copying virtusers into the
   alias rather than using a catchall. Under Postfix this allows email to
   invalid addresses in the alias domain to be rejected at the SMTP level.
   The default for this can be changed on the Server Templates page under Mail
   for domain, and it can be changed for existing domains on the Edit Virtual Server page.
 - Shells for mailboxes and domain owners are now configured on the new Custom
   Shells page, linked under System Customization on the left menu. This allows you
   to define as many different shells as you like, for access levels like email only,
   FTP and SCP only. When editing mailboxes or domain owner limits, you can then select
   one of the defined shells.
 - Backported the Extra Administrators feature from Virtualmin Pro, which allows
   domnain owners to create additional restricted administration logins.

Also available is version 5.1 of the Virtualmin framed theme, which adds
separate counts for real and alias domains and reduces left-menu refreshes.

Virtualmin GPL version 3.49 is now available for download from

include :

 - Added a warning about NSCD to the configuration check page.
 - When a domain is renamed, generics or sender canonical maps are
   properly updated too.
 - MySQL and LDAP sources for aliases and virtual addresses for
   Postfix can now be used by Virtualmin, when Webmin 1.390 or newer
   is installed and when they are setup properly in the Postfix module.
   This allows Virtualmin to effectively configure a remote mail server,
   assuming that domain Unix users and groups are also stored in LDAP.
 - Errors when extracting cPanel, Plesk and Ensim backup files are reported
   in more detail.
 - Sub-domains in cPanel backups can now be properly imported.
 - Added a checkbox to the backup form to include sub-servers of those selected
   too. A similar option is also available to virtual server owners when
   backing up a single domain, to include all sub-servers with the same owner.
 - Added the --user option to disable-feature.pl and enable-feature.pl to turn
   features off and on in all domains owned by some user, and the list-domains.pl
   to find domains by user. 

Also available is version 5.0 of the Virtualmin framed theme, which has
a few small user interface cleanups, such as preserving the alternate
striping when sorting.

This EC2 AMI has been updated again to use the latest version of Virtualmin GPL,

 - When re-creating a domain as part of a restore, the external
   DNS IP address is set to match the target system, rather than
   being copied from the source.
 - Added the CA Certificate tab to the Manage SSL Certificate page,
   for uploading a chained cert from your CA.
 - If the create of the Unix user or group for a virtual server fails,
   both are rolled back to avoid leaving half-created users in
   /etc/passwd or LDAP.
 - Various small bugfixes, minor features and optimizations to speed things up.

Also available is version 4.9 of the Virtualmin framed theme, which has
mostly small cosmetic changes.

Virtualmin GPL version 3.47 is now available for download from
http://www.webmin.com/virtualmin.html . New features in this version
include :

 - Added support for migrating domains from Plesk 8 backups.
 - The migration function will use the username and password from the
   original domain where possible, removing the need to specify them
   manually when on the migration form or as parameters to migrate-domain.pl.
   For Plesk backups the original username and password can be retrieved, while
   for Ensim and cPanel only the username can be found automatically.
 - When editing mail and FTP users, the simple alias editing for from Virtualmin
   Pro is now available.
 - Added an option to the Create alias websites by setting in server templates to
   use RedirectMatch instead of Redirect, which is more Google-friendly for parked
   domains.
 - Ported the feature to change a domain's MySQL password separately from the
   administration password from Virtualmin GPL.
 - Plugin modules can now define additional sections to appear on the right-hand
   side of the framed theme, and new global options to appear in the System
   Settings categories on the left.
 - The default number of alias servers that new virtual server owners can create
   can now be set on the Server Templates page.
 - Removed the Plugin Modules page and the section for enabled features from the
   Module Config page, and merged them into a single Features and Plugins page
   where you can select which are enabled.
 - Backported the virtual server validation feature from Virtualmin Pro to GPL.

Also available is version 4.8 of the Virtualmin framed theme, which has various
colour and system information updates, and allows themes to define their own
sections on the right frame.

Webmin version 1.370 is now available for download from

the following changes :

 - Updated the Webmin Users module to allow password quality
   restrictions to be defined, such as minimum length and
   checks for dictionary words (thanks to GE Medical Systems).
 - Added a maximum password age for Webmin users, and a page for
   forcing users to enter a new password when theirs expires.
   Also added limits on the number of old passwords that can be
   re-used.
 - The BIND module can now add a record to multiple DNS domains
   at once.
 - Added a page to the Postfix module for SMTP authentication And
   Encryption options.
 - Installed Apache modules are now always automatically detected in
   the Apache module, removing the need for manual configuration.
 - Updated the Bacula module to support packages like Mandrake's that
   don't have an /etc/bacula/bacula command.
 - Dovecot module updates to support new directives in latest version.
 - Support for RAID 10 and MDADM monitoring in the Linux RAID module.
 - Better support for comments and long zone names in the Shorewall
   module (thanks to Paul Gear)
 - Fixed a Windows-only security hole that allows any Webmin user to run
   any command (thanks to Keigo Yamazaki)

Also available is Usermin 1.300, which includes the changes :

 - Fixed several indexing bugs in the Read Mail module that caused some
   messages to appear as None in the mail list after deletion.
 - Added sysadmin-configurable options in the Filter Mail module to
   create a .forward file that runs procmail automatically, and to set
   the minimum time between automatic replies.
 - Added a Save and Edit button to the Read Mail module, to save a draft
   copy of a message and continue working on it.
 - Attachments in the Read Mail module are now shown using a table rather
   than as icons.

Virtualmin GPL version 3.46 is now available for download from

include :

 * Added a setting to control if virtual server owners can see
   mailboxes, on the Module Config page under Server administrator
   permissions.
 * In the Quota commands section of the Module Config page, added
   two new commands to get the quotas for a single user and group
   respectively. If defined, Virtualmin will use these when listing
   users in a domain or editing a single user, on the assumption that
   they are faster than the command which outputs quotas for all users.
 * Enhanced the Virtualmin GPL -> Pro upgrader to support systems
   installed using the GPL install script.
 * Creation of domains that match certain regular expressions can be
   denied using a new Module Config option in the Defaults for new
   domains section.
 * Added the --only-features parameter to restore-domain.pl, which tells
   Virtualmin to only enable features selected for restore when creating
   a new domain as part of the process.
 * Added a similar option to the restore form in the Virtualmin web interface.
 * Usage for previous months can be shown on the Bandwidth Monitoring page,
   using a month selector menu at the bottom of the table of domains or dates.
 * Added options on the Edit Server Template page to make some non-default
   template the one that is initially selected when adding new virtual
   servers, migrating them or creating from a batch file. 

Also available is version 4.7 of the Virtualmin framed theme, which has various
colour and system information updates.

I've created a new AMI for Virtualmin on EC2, with ID ami-4ff71226 .
This version differs from the old one in that it was created using the new
Virtualmin GPL install script, which produces a system that is much easier
to update. It is configured by default to use a YUM repository that we maintain,
and available updates will be shown on the right-hand frame after logging in.

 * AWstats statistics are now included in cPanel migrations.
 * The real name of a virtual server's Unix user is updated when the
   server's description is changed.
 * Backported the simpler alias editing form from Virtualmin Pro, which
   makes it quicker to setup autoreponders and forwarders. Also includes
   easier to use fields for advanced autoresponder options, like the reply
   period and date ranges.
 * Added a link from the Mail Aliases page to manually edit aliases in a
   domain using a text box. This makes bulk changes and copies simpler.
 * Migrated cPanel users with forwarding have email also delivered to
   their inbox, to maintain consistency with cPanel.
 * Added the Excluded Directories page for entering directories not to include
   in backups for a virtual server.
 * Updated the modify-domain.pl script to allow excluded directories to be
   managed with the --add-exclude and --remove-exclude parameters. Also updated
   list-domains.pl to show exclusions.
 * When enabling or disabling proxying for a domain, existing Apache directives
   are no longer re-generated from the template.
 * Added an option to the form for backing up a single virtual server to download
   the resulting file in the browser, rather than saving it to a file or sending
   to an SSH or FTP server.
 * The button to stop or restart ProFTPd is always displayed in the right frame,
   even if private IP-based FTP is not enabled.
 * A bunch of other small bugfixes.

Also available is version 4.5 of the Virtualmin framed theme, which
just has a few minor UI tweaks.

For those who don't know, EC2 is a relatively new service from Amazon that lets
you 'rent' virtual Linux systems by the hour. This is often cheaper and has less
administrative overhead than buying or leasing a real dedicated server in a datacenter.

 - Simplified the process of selecting Apache modules on Debian and

   by probing the LDAP server.
 - Added support for Gentoo 2006 in the Network Configuration module.
 - Updated the Webmin and Usermin modules to allow blocking failed logins

Also available is Usermin 1.290, which includes the changes :

 - Completely re-wrote the indexing system for mailboxes, to make it
   faster and more reliable. Messages are now identified by a unique
   ID, such as the maildir filename or IMAP UID.
 - Updated all pages in the Read Mail module to use ui-lib.pl for
   interface generation, to provide a more consistent and themable look.
 - Messages marked as Special are now automatically added to a virtual
   folder of the same name, making them easier to find.
 - Added a Preferences option to whitelist recipients of email that you
   send.
 - Added pages to the Filter Mail module to quicky setup an autoreponder
   or forwarding.

Since so many people use Usermin exclusively for web-based email, I have
created custom packages that are pre-configured to use a local IMAP server,
and includes the Virtualmin theme, which displays IMAP folders on the left
