I thought I could grab VPython output frames and rotate to different viewpoints with the mouse by default. Was that just wishful thinking or is something not working for me that I can't do that? Thanks, Lenore |

Ah! Sharp eyes! Not only is the folder name possibly problematic, at least in the past one was strongly urged NOT to install Python into Program Files but allow the Python installer to install into C:\PythonXY. Sorry, I don't have any good ideas. I think the research group somewhat accidentally stumbled on the answer to their question. I guess a possible area of concern is anything having to do with the graphics driver, or OpenGL. It's probably diagnostic of something that you have these problems with both Python 2.5 and 2.6, since one would expect differences. First: I have had the same problem with the new version. Plus, I need some libraries that are only available to 2.5. Respect to the installing, no, I haven't installed anything in both computers recently. But, rethinking in it, it may be caused by an update of any program. Do you have any ideas of how could I trace it? Do you know how they knew what was the problem? On Mon, Apr 5, 2010 at 2:50 PM, Bruce Sherwood <Bru...@nc...> wrote: > This is not familiar. This is not familiar. The only prior case I know of that seems a bit similar is that a group using VPython for research visualization had strange failures until they discovered that the problems were somehow caused by their having installed a particular video program, completely unrelated to Python. Do you recall recently installing a new program on each of your computers? Although I know of no reason why it should matter, you might upgrade to Python 2.6 and VPython 5.31. Hello. Recently, when I tried to execute a working program depending on VPython, it raised an error importing the library. That was not fixed reinstalling the whole Python interpreter and libraries. It happened suddenly in my fixed computer, I cannot relate it to any change in it, but in my laptop was still operative. Some weeks later, I run a trivial program (just creating the scene and plotting an sphere) in my laptop, worked; I ran it again just before and there was the error I could not get rid of. I use Python 2.5.4 and VPython 5.11 over WXP, Professional (fixed) and Home (laptop), both with antivirus NOD32 4.0, and the error are: The first time I run the program in the Python IDLE: >>> import visual Traceback (most recent call last): File "<pyshell#0>", line 1, in <module> import visual File "F:\Archivos de programa\Clasificados\Programación\Python\2.5\lib\site-packages\visual\__init__.py", line 83, in <module> cvisual._set_dataroot( _os_path.split( __file__ )[0] + _os_path.sep) UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xf3 in position 47: ordinal not in range(128) And if I try it again, I get: >>> import visual Traceback (most recent call last): File "<pyshell#1>", line 1, in <module> import visual File "F:\Archivos de programa\Clasificados\Programación\Python\2.5\lib\site-packages\visual\__init__.py", line 70, in <module> del ui, crayola, primitives NameError: name 'ui' is not defined Any ideas of what is happening and how to solve it? VPython 5.31 released for all platforms. Kadir Haldenbilen made further corrections to the ttfquery and FontTools modules, which fixed a variety of errors in rendering 3D text. I fixed an error in updating various positions such as text.lower_right when you changed text.height. If a relatively ordinary font gives an error in a text object, please report it. Thanks. No, there isn't a way to do that. However, in the documentation under "Work with 3D objects" choose "Additional options" to read about copying objects from one display to another. After copying you would need to update both sets of objects yourself. Bruce Sherwood On 4/2/2010 10:19 AM, walgri wrote: > Hello, > > I'm a total newbye in Visual. Hello, I'm a total newbye in Visual. Is it possible to have more displays showing the same object hierarchy ? I would like to have two or more different synced views of the same objects. If yes are there any issues on getting events (like picking) from the varios displays ? Thanks, Walgri |

Has anybody successfully installed Visual Python on the new Ubuntu 10.04 LTS beta1? If so, it would be great to hear about what the steps were; from my understanding, the default packages in the repositories don't work out of the box. I'm looking at upgrading in the coming weeks and it would be great if Visual Python would just work, like it used to. What needs to happen in order for the neccessary fixes / patches to make it into 10.04? ~Luke |

VPython 5.3 is now available for all platforms. It offers the following enhancements. *New 3D text object* Thanks to great work by Kadir Haldenbilen, there is a new "text" object that from any True Type (.ttf) font produces extruded 3D text. This supercedes the very limited old visual.text machinery (which however is being left in place for upward compatibility). Kadir had to identify and exploit various font-related modules to find a font, identify its contours, and split the solid portions of characters into triangles to be used in a faces object. These additional font-related modules are bundled into the Windows and Mac versions. As usual, until and unless someone makes a distribution package, Linux users will have to install them manually: they are FontTools, ttfquery, and Polygon. See the detailed documentation on the new text object in the help that is installed with VPython. You may find some minor glitches. For example, the "&" is filled in on the sans-serif font Verdana, other fonts show o's and other such letters filled in, and some fonts give execution errors due to being ill-formed. You are invited to report problems with fonts or specific characters of fonts. Polygon is being distributed in the Windows and Mac installers subject to the following conditions: "This distribution contains code from the GPC Library, and/or code resulting from the use of the GPC Library. This usage has been authorized by The University of Manchester, on the understanding that the GPC-related features are used only in the context of this distribution. It is not permitted to extract the GPC code from the distribution as the basis for commercial exploitation, unless a GPC Commercial Use Licence is obtained from The University of Manchester, contact: http://www.cs.man.ac.uk/~toby/gpc/". *Enhancements to faces object* You can now create a faces object f, specifying only the positions of the vertices, then use f.make_normals() to create normals that are perpendicular to all the faces. You can also use f.make_twosided() to convert a one-sided faces object into a two-sided one. You can now say f.append(pos=(x,y,z)), whereas formerly you also had to give a normal when appending a vertex. You can use the previously announced f.smooth() to average similar normals in adjacent triangles to make the object look smoother, and with VPython 5.3 you can specify the smoothing criterion: f.smooth(0.7) means that normals whose directions differ by an angle whose cosine is greater than 0.7 (about 45 degrees) will be averaged. The simple form f.smooth() corresponds to f.smooth(0.95), in which case normals within 18 degrees of each other will be averaged. *Highlighting a curve when making a graph* When using gcurve to graph a function, there is a problem that you may not notice any plotting if the function repeats back on itself. You can now highlight the current plotting position in the gcurve by specifying a "dot" option: gcurve(dot=True). By default the dot has the same color as the gcurve, is round, and has a width of 8 pixels. You can change these defaults: gcurve(dot=True, dot_color=color.blue, shape='square', size=15). *Minor bug fixes* Some bugs were fixed. The helix object didn't have a "visible" attribute. If you had more than one points object, some with round points and some with square points, you saw only round points. Some technical bugs in the faces object were corrected. |

I feel halfway between being betrayed and being an idiot. In all my previous uses of PackageMaker to build installers for the Mac, the entities placed into site-packages were all folders, for which one must give the folder name in the destination as well as in the source, so for the visual folder I had to specify "Move stage/visual to site-packages/visual". This time however it was necessary to place a file FontTools.pth into site-packages, and I assumed that I had to specify "Move stage/FontTools.pth to site-packages/FontTools.pth". Wrong! For a file, as opposed to a folder, you have to say "Move stage/FontTools.pth to site-packages/". For folders, if you don't repeat the folder name in the destination, no folder is created, and all the files in the source folder are spilled into site-packages. I suppose there's some way to view this behavior as "normal", though to this bemused person it looks inconsistent. I expect to be able to post VPython 5.3 today for all platforms. Bruce Sherwood |

Hi Bruce, I'm not sure why Package Manager is having trouble with your filenames/ directories.. I'll try to see if I can figure that out, however I do know it's possible to have PackageManager run scripts after the files are extracted. Maybe a little python script could just "fix things up" afterwards. I'll try to look into that as well. -steve On Mar 29, 2010, at 9:23 PM, Bruce Sherwood wrote: > I'm not working from a command line; I have no experience with that. > I'm > using PackageMaker. I'm not working from a command line; I have no experience with that. I'm using PackageMaker. So I don't know how to answer your questions. I hope someone with Mac experience can help me. I've prepared an installer for a significant update VPython 5.3 but am unable to make an installer for the Mac. Thanks to Kadir Haldenbilen, VPython 5.3 provides extrudable 3D text of any True Type font, which is very cool. This requires some extra modules beyond numpy, and these should be included in the installer for ease of use. Each of these modules has a folder of .py files plus an egg-info file that needs to be at the same level as the folder. In PackageMaker I list the egg-info files as usual, but alas PackageMaker creates an installer which when run places these egg-info files inside folders with the same name as the egg-info file, minus the ".egg-info" extension. This doesn't cause problems with numpy, but with one of the other modules it causes Python to fail to find modules inside the module folder. I of course Googled a bit without finding any information on this. It's frustrating that in PackageMaker I give a destination like .....site-packages/xxx.egg-info but it goes into .....site-packages/xxx/xxx.egg-info. Experimentally, if I move the egg-info file up one level, VPython 5.3 works fine. I cannot find any switches in PackageMaker to prevent this bizarre behavior. I also tried chmod-ing the egg-info files to match the permissions on the numpy egg-info file, but that didn't help. AAARRRGGGHHH!!! HELLLLLLLP! Bruce Sherwood |

Vpython installed from repository segfaults, as is does in 9.10. I've filed a bug report to python-visual and libboost-python, but perhaps we can be a squeeky wheel and get this fixed before the scheduled April 29 release of 10.04. To test this without screwing up my system I installed Kubuntu on a USB drive and booted from there. -gary |

Dear Stef, and others, When I explicitly include the tga files as data_files in my setup.py module for py2exe, it works ok when one of the py2exe options is "skip_archive":1 In this case, the library.zip is not created, and the three tga files appear in folder ...\dist\visual. However, just omitting that "skip_archive" option, thus trying to get everything into library.zip, makes a MyProgram.exe which fails with the following log: Traceback (most recent call last): File "MyProgram.py", line 6, in <module> File "visual\__init__.pyc", line 77, in <module> File "visual\ui.pyc", line 3, in <module> File "visual\materials.pyc", line 151, in <module> File "visual\materials.pyc", line 129, in loadTGA IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'C:\\DOCUME~1\\092710\\MYDOCU~1\\python\\dist\\library.zip\\visual/turbulence3.tga' In this case, py2exe has put the tga files in dist\visual again, instead of in dist\library.zip\visual. Manually adding the tga files into library.zip\visual does not fix this traceback report. If I explicitly try to have setup.py's data_files put the tga files into "library.zip\visual", py2exe complains "could not create ......\dist\library.zip: cannot create a file when that file already exists. Any ideas? Has anyone gotten vpython 5 to work with py2exe's library.zip? The three *.tga files are causing trouble. (I put a more complete description of this on vpython.wikidot a couple weeks ago, but thus far no response there.)
