I am thinking of using vpython with a short python course where I am restricted to using iBook G4 laptops with OSX 10.4 installed. I have installed python 2.6.4 and the vpython listed on the vpython site that appears to be appropriate (ostensibly for OSX 10.4 or later): VPython-MacPPC-Py2.6-5.12 (older 5.12 for PowerPC Mac) However, attempts to use vpython meet with the error shown below. Is there a workaround for this or am I just plain out of luck? >>> from visual import * Traceback (most recent call last): File "<pyshell#0>", line 1 from visual import * File "/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/visual/__init__.py", line 59 import cvisual ImportError: dlopen(/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/visual/cvisual.so, 2): Symbol not found: _close$UNIX2003 Referenced from: /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/visual/cvisual.so Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib |

I think I have downloaded it from the following link: http://pypi.python.org/pypi/TTFQuery/1.0.2 ( I have three different TTF Query installed, this one should be the one working) It has sources as well, Ibelieve they should compile with Python 2.6. I am using Python 2.5. Thanks for this bug report. I find the following: On Windows, label(text='ab&cd') underlines the c, and never shows &. On Mac, displays ok but each getkey() puts TWO events in the queue. Okay on Ubuntu. So there are two bugs, no & on Windows and double events with getkey. I've noticed that VIDLE doesn't give source files the appropriate Python icon when saved. Comparing the IDLE (from MacPython 2.x) and VIDLE application bundles, the former has a source file icon in /Contents/Resources. I'm wondering whether copying that icon to the corresponding place in the VIDLE application bundle will cause source files saved in VIDLE to inherit the correct icon. Does anyone know? Joe |

Since opacity seems to be involved, perhaps that machine running Ubuntu 9.04 is running an old version 3.x of Visual, whereas the current version of povexport assumes Visual 5.x. You might try writing a small test program to see whether indeed opacity isn't supported. I've been using povexport (contributed program on vpython.org) on both Windows and Linux (Ubuntu 9.10) with no problems for quite some time. Today I tried it on an machine running Ubuntu 9.04 and got this error: Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to load module "libcanberra-gtk-module.so": libcanberra-gtk-module.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Traceback (most recent call last): File "3D_Spring_export.py", line 100, in <module> pvex.export(display=scene, filename=prefix+str(num)+ext) File "/home/danny/pymodules/povexport.py", line 608, in export object_code = function(obj) File "/home/danny/pymodules/povexport.py", line 437, in export_arrow no_reflection=arrow_no_reflection, opacity=a.opacity, visible=0) AttributeError: 'arrow' object has no attribute 'opacity Any ideas what to do to fix this? I think what you want is scene.center = vector(0,1,3) # or simply (0,1,3), which will be converted to a vector scene.forward = scene.center-vector(0,4,-6) Since you're familiar with Povray, you might be interested in the VPython-to-Povray converter available in the contributed section of vpython.org. Hi, I have spent the last couple days trying to get the following to work. In Povray, we have a camera syntax like the following camera {location <0,4,-6> look_at <0,1,3>} The result is this http://i49.tinypic.com/2r6glub.jpg I have a hard time doing it in VPython. I read the documentation, and had tried many combinations. Can you guide me with more details on camera position? Thanks. |

What was the most recent version of VPython that did work properly? Is the one that fails the very newest, 5.24 for Windows, made available yesterday? I don't know of any changes over the last many versions that would account for what you're seeing. Apparently your graphics driver is very old by driver standards (2006), and the most likely diagnosis is a problem with the graphics driver. It used to be that one got graphics driver updates for a desktop machine from the manufacturer of the graphics card, in your case NVIDIA, but one got updates for a laptop from the laptop manufacturer. However, I recently noticed that my Dell laptop wasn't displaying the faces_heightfield example correctly despite Dell claiming that my graphics driver was up to date. I updated from NVIDIA and now faces_heightfield displays properly. Hello, First let me apologize if this has already been covered by recent traffic on the list. I've been working with VPython for several years, mostly in research projects with undergraduate physics majors. I wrote the VPNBody solar system dynamics package that's linked through the VPython website. I'm currently working on a Dell laptop with an NVidia graphics card. With the newest version of VPython, all my programs are producing a long output of warning messages to the Shell window. The output starts with this: ------------------- VPython WARNING: errors in shader program: Fragment info ------------- Internal error: assembly compile error for fragment shader at offset 1742: -- error message -- line 56, column 7: error: invalid destination variable line 63, column 13: error: invalid operand variable ------------------ Eventually, the output identifies my graphics card: ------------------- -- internal assembly text -- !!ARBfp1.0 OPTION NV_fragment_program2; # cgc version 1.5.0000, build date May 1 2006 16:21:37 # command line args: #vendor NVIDIA Corporation #version 1.0.02 #profile fp40 #program main ---------------------- My programs run normally except for the text dumped to the shell window. I have attempted to update the driver for my graphics card, but I already have the latest driver according to the Dell website. The warning messages do not appear to be relevant for what I'm trying to do with VPython. But they interfere badly with screen prompts and other information that I send to the shell window. I am wondering if there is a way to suppress these messages in the shell window? Or any other fixes? Thanks. -- Rodney Dunning Assistant Professor of Physics Longwood University |

Thanks to Gary Pajer pointing out that numpy 1.4 has been withdrawn due to compatibility issues, there is now available at vpython.org a rebuilt VPython for Windows (called 5.24) that includes numpy 1.3 instead of numpy 1.4. Tomorrow I'll check whether the Mac version also needs to be rebuilt. Bruce Sherwood |

We should probably confirm that 1.3 does break visual before proceeding. I'm surprised that a change from 1.3 -> 1.4 would cause breakage... the API is supposed to be the same. But wait ... I now recall that there is a discussion going on about numpy 1.4 ... evidently it actually breaks the ABI, the application binary interface. There have been over 200 posts on the subject on the numpy discussion list. The break comes in date/time support, so I wouldn't think it would affect visual. I glanced at some of the posts, and they talk as if 1.4 has been released, but I can't find it. Maybe they've withdrawn it. On the one hand, this will bite only people who install the current numpy after installing the current visual *and* are on Windows *and* are novice enough not to figure out how to fix their problem. Most people who install numpy independently from visual will probably be able to figure things out as I did. On the other hand, you eliminate even that small set of people by recompiling. That set might have zero people in it. But to be entirely neat and clean, one would not want visual to break if one installs the current numpy. By the way, AFAICT, the current version of numpy is 1.3. ... if anyone sees something I've missed, and the current version is indeed 1.4, please let me know. Overall, I'd say it's not critical, but some day when you have time it would be better to recompile. But someone in addition to me should try to install the latest numpy 1.3 on top of the latest visual on WinXP and see if it breaks. Just in case the problem is idiosyncratic to me. -g On Mon, Feb 15, 2010 at 12:04 PM, Bruce Sherwood <Bru...@nc...>wrote: > I would guess (without actually trying it) that yes, Visual would surely > work with numpy 1.3 if (but only if) Visual had been compiled with numpy 1.3 > present. I installed VPython on a new WinXP machine. First I installed python, then visual, and all was good. Then I went about and installed the other stuff I use ... numpy, scipy, matplotlib ... And VPython crashed python at "import visual" Then I discovered that the VPython installer installs numpy 1.4, but the latest version on numpy.scipy.org is numpy 1.3. So I had unknowingly downgraded numpy. So I uninstalled numpy and visual (and python for good measure) and reinstalled, and it works again. Is it possible (or already known) that visual does not work with numpy 1.3, the current release? I'm hesitant to try it myself. Do you still have the problem with the latest installer (5.23) posted on the website? That should have fixed this issue, which seemed to be related to osx 10.6 Vs 10.5 different linking internals.
