please tell exactly what you are doing, starting from a fresh config (run x64sc -default)

I see what I believe is the same thing.

Configuration: macOS GTK release of *** VICE Version 3.6.2-dev, rev 42514 ***

1) Launch Vice using "x64sc -default"
2) Choose menu item Preferences -> Load settings from ...
3) Press "Cancel"
4) At this point many GUI items are no longer operational. Preferences -> "Settings ..." doesn't do anything. Preferences -> "Load settings from ..." doesn't do anything. Pressing red "X" to close x64sc is non responsive (doesn't exit). File -> Exit simulator doesn't do anything.

Some menu items do work (non-complete list):

File -> Reset -> Soft (or hard) reset -- both work
Preferences -> Load settings (the non "from ..." one) works
Preferences -> Full screen

In this state, have to Ctrl-C abort Vice from the terminal window that launched it or kill the process in order to exit.

Of course "Load extra settings from ..." follows basically the same code path and it fails similarly.
