Hi,
I'm totally new to all this, so any help would be good.
I installed Veracrypt on my laptop (Windows 10) and installed a hidden volume + outer volume on a hard disc drive (i.e. the small box that attaches via USB). All seemed good and logged in and out of both volumes no problem.
Then I read an article advising to write protect the outer volume, so that it does not corrupt the hidden volume. I followed the details and did the write protection. Since then I had problems. I am now in the situation where:
The not logging into the non-hidden is not that much of an issue, but what concerns me is something else might go wrong. I didn't really need the folder to be hidden as such, but thought it would be better in the unlikely event it was ever stolen, as was planning at some stage to put work documents on there). I'm 100% sure the passwords are correct, as logged in a couple of times successfully after all set up, but when I try to login on the 'outer' (non-hidden) volume I get an error message which says:
Error:
Operation failed due to one or more of the following:
Has anyone else had this problem? Luckily I've only got one unimportant document on there at the moment, but wonder if there is a solution or maybe I need to change some setting somewhere. Alternatively could I just format the drive and I won't lose the portion I allocated to the hidden/non-hidden volumes?
Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Anything would be really appreciated!
Best regards,
Adam
Sorry for adding a comment. It may be relevant that I have since rebooted the laptop and cannot login on either volumes any more unfortunately, so something weird is going on.
Best regards,
Adam
I'm not a VeraCrypt developer.
If I understand correctly, then you have an encrypted partition on the disk (not a file container).
It is possible that Windows once offered to "initialize" the partition, because it did not see a file system on it. Thus, Windows could damage the VeraCrypt headers, which are stored at the beginning and at the end of the partition.
If you did not backup the VeraCrypt headers, then probably the data will not be restored.
First of all, you should make an image of the whole partition through dd / Acronis Disk Director or another program, so as not to lose the stored data.
However, it is worth waiting for the answer from the developers.
Hi,
thank you for the answer! In fact it's a file container. It mount quickly
but only when I remove my external harddrive an the usb stick. It is
normal? Maybe I need more RAM?

I do not think this is normal.
And I think that this is unlikely to be due to RAM, at least I did not notice a significant RAM consumption when using VeraCrypt. But I do not know how much memory you have and how much free memory.
But I can assume that the problems with mounting are due to conflicts with the letters of the disks. Maybe when mounting you use the same letter that is already used by an external disk or a USB stick?
In fact there is no conflict with the letter. Veracrypt try to mount the
file container. There is an image in the email (which I found on the
internet).
So sometimes he mount it sometimes he continues to load (like the image).
I just observed it's quickly and work much more when I removed the other
usb external drive

Did you disable Windows Fast Startup which exists in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10?

Reboot PC after disabling the Windows Fast Startup so the changes take effect on your PC.
