Hello. I'm having strange problem with two of my drives. I have tree drives on my system, two SSD drives and one HDD. Only the system SSD performance is ok after encryption.

Here is the system SSD performance, full disk encryption with PIM:

Here is the problematic disk before VC encryption:

    And after encryption:

The problematic HDD is encrypted on partition level. The original drive letter is unassociated with the hard drive and the same letter is mounted by VC.

Slow speeds are confirmed also on normal copy operations, it's not some testing program problem.
The hard drive is with enabled cache. Encryption was made using defaults. VC version 1.21 64bit.
    Windows 10 latest version 64bit.

I'm testing the second SSD, which is also encrypted at partition level and will post results later.

Both partition level encryptions are with default PIMs. System level encryption PIM is not stored and is not used for the other volumes, which are mounted successfully after system boot as the boot password is the same for all volumes. I have added the volumes to system favorites.

Any idea what is the cause of this problem and how to fix it?

    Thanks,
    Sabin

Here are the results of the second SSD with and without encryption.

    No encryption:

    With encryption:

Still very big difference in write speed.

On the benchmark in VC I get 7.2 GB/s mean speed for AES encryption.

So it seems that only the system encryption is working fast.

    Any ideas?

Fellas, can someone PLEASE measure with CrystalDisk encrypted partition and post results. I'm wondering if this is problem on my machine or from the software. Thanks!

Looking over your results, Sabin, you really seem to be getting murdered on your disk write benchmarks, so try this...

Press Win+X and go to Device Manager. Double-click "Disk Drives" to open it, and then right-click the problem drive and choose "Properties." Click on the "Policies" tab and make sure the "Enable write caching..." is enabled. That's really my only suggestion.

Thank you Gary, for your suggestion!

I checked that option and write caching is enabled on both disks. It must be something else creating this problem.

Since you did ask for someone to post their benchmarks for comparison, I went ahead and ran CrystalDiskMark on my own Toshiba spinner (partition encryption). For easier comparison, I combined your 3rd screenshot (encrypted problematic HDD) with my screenshot, side by side. Your HDD and my Toshiba are probably about the same generation of drive technology.

    Great info Gary, thanks!

What is your operationg system? Do you have system level pre-boot encryption? I wonder if my system encryption is somehow interfearing to the partition encription...

I have some other computer around. Maybe I have to try to another PC with same windows wersion like mine and with windows 7 to find out the root of the problem.

My system is Win10 x64 v1703, and all my encryption (system SSD and various data spinners) is at the partition level. My 4-core AMD CPU predates when they started including the AES-NI instruction set, so newer CPUs might have an advantage. If you can put that HDD of yours in another computer with VeraCrypt installed and benchmark it, that might help you isolate the problem a little. Below is a side-by-side CrystalDiskMark comparison of your encrypted SSD to my encrypted SSD as another basis of evaluation. Bottlenecks belong only on beer bottles :)

I managed to fix HDD performance (D disk) uninstalling the intel driver 'Intel(R) C600 series chipset SAS RAID (SATA Mode)'

2nd SSD performance (E disk) however is still off. I encoded E disk using Windows Bitlocker and performance is not degraded. VeraCrypt driver has compatabuility issues with my hp z620 system and Windows 10 x64 v1703.

    Hi

I'm seeing the same issue as Savin in my testing to compare Bitlocker vs. Veracrypt on my laptop.

Here are my before and after CrystalDisk (CD) Mark results on the same laptop (HDD, not SDD) with a fresh install and updated version of Windows 10Pro v1703.

If it matters, booting is UEFI with Secure Boot enabled for results with no encryption and for encryption with Bitlocker. For Veracryt, Boot is UEFI with SecureBoot disabled.

Also, I used the following procedure to obtain the results: 1) configure BIOS of laptop for UEFI and Secure Boot, fresh install windows 10Pro, update it, reboot and run CD to get the 'no encryption' results 2) turn on bitlocker, wait until bitlocker completes system encryption, reboot, run CD to get bitlocker results 3) turn off bitlocker, reboot, go in laptop BIOS and turn of secure boot, once booted, install VeraCrypt v1.22-Beta3, system encrypt with veracrypt using defaults, once veracrypt encryption completes, reboot, run CD to get veracrypt results.

Can anything be done to improve the VeraCrypty write performance compared to the results with no Encryption or with Bitlocker?

Okay, thanks. Hopefully, it gets addressed in the not too distant future.

I have the same problem. My SSD: samsung ssd 960 evo m2 500gb. Windows 10. VeraCrypt 1.22 64. AES

Pay attention to the screenshots in the attachment. The recording speed drops very much. More than 10 times.

Is it possible to fix this? It is very important for me. I would have donate a lot of money for this if it had been fixed.

Does anyone know is extreme SSD performance degradation fixed in latest release?

They supposedly released some SSD fixes in latest release. I am planing to engage with Veracrypt however i am finding all these threads all over the place about bad performance with SSD and Veracrypt combo.

    Kind regards
