It's been a number of years since I released a CDROM version of Tux Paint. (The last version available was 0.9.16, from October 2006.) I'm finally creating a new one! I'm once again doing this via CafePress. I send them a master disc, and they use it to create on-demand duplicates when anyone purchases a copy. Along with being able to direct visitors of the Tux Paint website to CafePress to buy a disc, this also gets Tux Paint in the CafePress 'marketplace,' where folks who might not have heard about Tux Paint can find it. Why would someone buy a disc? A few reasons I can think of: to send a couple of dollars my way; to have a physical copy of the software they can keep safe (if they need to reinstall it); as an easier way to install Tux Paint on numerous computers (like a school lab), or on computers that don't have direct internet access (like a child's computer at home in their bedroom); to give as a gift (birthday/etc.). The disc I've burned, and will soon be mailing to CafePress, includes the latest version of Tux Paint (0.9.21, from July 2009) for Windows XP/2000/Vista/7, Mac OS X 10.5+, all versions of RedHat, Fedora CORE and Fedora Linux that we support, and the source. (It has some basic HTML files for easier navigation.) I'll send another note once the disc is available at CafePress (and, of course, update the tuxpaint.org website). PS - Perhaps in the future, I can do this collaboratively with the folks who help me translate Tux Paint. That way, I can generate localized versions of the HTML files that users who don't speak (or don't prefer) English can understand the disc more readily. Perhaps some PHP pages which are then 'executed' one time for each locale, to generate sets of HTML files. What do folks think? -- -bill! Sent from my computer |
