I had same problem - t4k_common was installed in the default location, but tuxmath configure couldn't find it. Solved it by doing: export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig/ after verifying that t4k_common.pc was located in that path. |

(I'm compiling it in virtual Ubuntu on Windows 7) In addition of what others have already said, the current git version of tuxmath has a --language switch that you can use to start tuxmath with a different language. You can get the code with git: http://tux4kids.alioth.debian.org/git.php Also you should add the hr code to the po/LINGUAS file(I am not sure if that only affects the generation/installation of translations or if it is required also at runtime) BTW, if you post the translation hr.po file here, it can be added to tuxmath, oh, I see there is already a hr.po file for tuxmath http://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/tux4kids/tuxmath.git/tree/po/hr.po Don't know it's state or the correctness of its translation, and I see hr has already been added to the po/LINGUAS file. Do you already have an idea about the web app you have to develop? anything related to education and/or childs? To get a .mo file from a .po file, run the msgfmt program (part of gettext): msgfmt filename.po -o filename.mo According to articles such as: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gettext http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4329756/what-are-the-different-gettext-file-formats-used-for .gmo files are .mo files. The extension just means they're GNU Machine Object files (where generated by/for GNU tools). > Also I tried to start the game in some other > language, like German, and it just started in English. Assuming your version of libintl handles switching languages, you should be able to change the language globally by changing environment variables. The version of libintl I use (BSD version, not GNU), checks environment variables LANGUAGE, LC_ALL (and other LC variables) and then LANG. I believe that's a POSIX standard so it should be similar for the GNU libintl library. Let's assume the country code for Croatia is HR. If I want to run a program using the mo file(s) for Croatia, I set the LANG variable before running it: export LANG=hr. You need the corresponding .mo file(s) installed in share/locale/hr/LC_MESSAGES so libintl can find them (or in a location libintl is configured to search). To start Tuxmath in German, you should be able to use: export LANG=de If you have gcc (GNU C compiler) on your system, type gcc to test out the results and see if the output is in another language. I typically start programs from the command line. If you're starting from a desktop or window manager, you need to set the environment variable globally somehow (methods vary depending on desktop) or set it before you start X Windows. If you're running on Windows 7, you can build Tuxmath natively on Windows using mingw and msys and then you don't have to deal with an extra layer of complexity. Same techniques work for setting languages on Windows (assuming the programs use libintl) and you can change the environment variables via msys shell program, command line or globally in Windows. I've built and run Tuxmath that way. Sincerely, Laura |

If you're looking for more ideas to attract applicants, the project I started in 2013 has lots of room for development. It's an algebra game called TuxBlocks, and you can find a playable link here <http://tux-blocks.appspot.com/> and the code and description here <https://github.com/thomaswp/tuxblocks>. I also wrote up a project description for GSoC 2014 <https://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code-2014-tux4kids/wiki/IdeasList#Algebra_Game>, which I could update and expand for 2015 if you want. I built version 2.0.3 ( https://packages.debian.org/unstable/games/tuxmath ) and I don't see a comets.c file anywhere. I think it was in a different version. Main problems I had building were using sdl_ttf instead of sdl_pango and building without sdl_net. Seems like no ones tested those options in a long time and I needed to make some modifications to get things working properly again. There's still some duplication of effort between some t4kcommon functions and some of the tuxmath functions especially with regards to locating and loading helper files. It could use some serious cleaning up, but I haven't had time to do much with it. I have some alternative build scripts/files that use cDetect and make instead of the GNU autotools if anyone needs them. |

Hey all, My name is Aaron Santiago, and I'm currently a senior at Bard College at Simon's Rock, working on getting my BA in Computer Science this spring. I have had a decent amount of experience with developing games, and programming in general. You can find some of my previous work on my website here: http://jabdownsmash.com/portfolio/ My GitHub account can be found here: https://github.com/sepharoth213 I was looking through the ideas list for Tux4Kids and I came across the mobile port, and I was immediately struck by the fact that the current port is written in Haxe/NME. I currently work in Haxe/Lime and the games in my portfolio are written in Haxe/OpenFL and I figured that I would love to work on the port. I have a few questions though: I tried building the current Haxe/NME mobile port and I didn't get very far, which is most likely due to the fact that it was written years ago and NME/OpenFL has changed a lot since then. Rewriting the port for OpenFL would make the most sense, but would the port end up as a successor to the original? A Haxe/OpenFL port would be able to support more platforms than the original TuxMath, and might be easier to maintain. I tried playing TuxMath and took a look at the Git repository and noticed that substantial changes to the game haven't happened in a long time. Would a port need to be a direct port, or would small changes make sense: adding tweens, updating assets, rearranging menus, etc.? Or does it make more sense to just create a whole new game? If a new game were created, how should a more modern TuxMath or TuxMath-like be made? I would personally love to work with a mentor and develop an open source and modern educational math game with Haxe. Anyway, those are my thoughts as of yet. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions anyone may have. Thanks, Aaron |

Has anyone looked at adding SDL2 support to Tuxmath to use on systems that may no longer want to maintain SDL 1.2.x? I started looking at the Tuxmath source code to see how difficult the task might be. Took me a couple of days just to get Tuxmath to build successfully. I started with the 2.0.3 source tarball from Debian. Tried adding the code from the accessibility branch back into that. I ran across some issues when trying to build --without-sdlnet and had to work around them. I also ran across some issues when using SDL_ttf. The SDL_ttf library doesn't handle newline characters. I wrote some code to actually draw multiple lines of text using SDL_ttf when there were newline characters in the string. Doesn't look like SDL_pango has been ported to SDL2 yet, but there is a port for SDL2_ttf. It would be nice if SDL_ttf worked properly in Tuxmath before trying to move to SDL2. Was curious if there was any active development going on and any plans for SDL2 support in the future. What, if anything, is currently on the Tuxmath development roadmap? Thanks. |

Hi Tomas, Sorry to hear you're having trouble. Can you try the following and see if it indicates the problem: $ tuxmath --debug-all If not, my last resort would be: $ gdb `which tuxmath` (gdb) run HTH. > Tomas Jurik <mailto:kyl...@at...> > January 4, 2015 at 1:37 AM > > Hi all, > > During playing tuxmath I had unexpected shutdown of the game. > I have a opensuse 13.1 and tuxmath 2.0.3-2.8 > thanks for help > r. > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Dive into the World of Parallel Programming! Hi all! My child just started to like this game, see the image. Any chance that somebody implements it as an activity for Tuxmath or as a new game? Cheers Pere |
