Trinux 0.80rc2 loads the SNORT package, but complains that some libraries are missing. Has anyone else seen this problem? What library package(s) do I need to load for SNORT? Thanks |

The easiest way to fix the problem (meaning my problem) is to add a line ifconfig eth1 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0 up to \tux\init\last on the boot floppy and it should bring it up. Thats what I do on a trinux box I'm using as a firewall. you can then also add the commands to enable IP forwarding and any initial iptables commands to this same file. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I'm new to this list, so first off, I'd like to say hello, and thanks for all the work you've done on this great tool. I have a couple of questions. 1) I would like to customize the trinux initialization script (linuxrc). Specifically, I would like to streamline it a bit for my needs. For example, I don't need it to check for packages on the hard disk because I know for sure I am getting them from a server. How can I do that? Is it just a matter of modifying the initrd.gz image? If so, how do I go about that? 2) I would like to add console mouse support (gpm.) How should I proceed? I guess my general question is, how do I customize trinux above and beyond what you can do in the tux directory? Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Hello all I have created a Trinux boot CD that works really well but I'm having difficulties creating a cd that will load additional kernel modules when it boots. I am trying to load the following kernel modules to create a bootable Linux cd that supports the PCMCIA Xircom network card on my laptop. pcmcia-bin.tgz pcmcia-coremods.tgz pcmcia-xirc2ps.tgz To try and get this working I have been copying these files into the /TRINUX/ directory on my CD image and adding the package filenames to /TRINUX/tux/config/kpkglist on the CD image. But this does not work. The modules just do not load at boot time. Once Trinux has booted I can then mount the CD-ROM, copy these three packages to the root directory, untar them, and exec pcmcia to initialise the network card. This brings up the network card fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I feel like there is something small that I am missing as I'm still getting my head around Trinux. Great tools kit though. I have problems to connect a ZIP 250 on the USB port: I loaded trinux (boot disk=ide_0.8rc2) with the mandatrory packages + the scsi one and the fsmods one. (by the way in the scsi package, the init.m file contains insmod scsi.o instead of scsi_mod.o) with these packages, i first tried to use the aha152x module but without success, the instruction: modprobe aha152x.o (with /etc/modules.conf filled) or insmod aha152x.o gives me: no such device I also tried to load the usbcore, usb_ohci or usbuhci, usb-storage modules I found for the kernel 245 from slackware80, also without success Can anyone help? ------------------------------------------------------------ This email was sent through the free email service at http://www.anonymous.to/ To report abuse, please visit our website and click 'Contact Us.' |

Hi all! I'm new to the Trinux thing and need a bit of help. I apologize if this is documented and I just didn't see it. But I've spent the better part of today reading the Trinux website and almost all of the posts for 2001 (Thats about 180). I have a p166 that is currently functioning as a GW running a full dist of Debian. I would like to change this to just a simple single floppy dist. For several reasons I've picked Trinux, but I won't go into them here. Unless u really want me to, then reply and I'll provide them. I can't seem to get my 3Com 3c509 (10BaseT ISA) card to configure w/ an address and netmask on boot. It would appear that it is reconized by the kernel because after it's booted, I can ifconfig it w/ an address and NM. Forwarding and stuff doesn't work yet, but I don't think I'm quite there. I need to get the 2nd card working first. Dmesg isn't alot of help. There are no messages that talk about assigning an address to either card, yet 3c950 works (cause it boots - there are messages of pkg's that it's loading over the net). And there are messgages that seem to show that the 3c509 is working. There doesn't seem to be any error messages. /var/log/messages either. Here is the config that I'm running. Hardware: P166MMX Award Bios 80Meg's of ram. 3C950 PCI 10/100 card (This seems to configure fine as eth0) 3C509 ISA 10Meg card (For the private net on eth1) So I've read through the http://trinux.sourceforge.net site. And I've read what I believe to be all relative parts of the Linux Ether-Howto. My syslinux.cfg: display license prompt 1 default network timeout 30 label network kernel bzimage append vga=4 initrd=initrd.gz root=/dev/ram0 pkg=network console=/dev/ttyS1 ether=9,0xe800,eth0 ether=10,0x300,eth1 (The info that I got for the ether commands came from an ifconfig while Debian was running) Addtionally, messages that I get on boot are: Looking for eth0 Bringing down eth0 Found static network config config eth0 config eth1 Oh yea, I almost forgot. I do have a /tux/config/eth1 file that says: 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0 I was thinking that that would be enough. Do I have to write a script to assign the address I want? I hope I provided enough info. I also hope that there is not something glaringly stupid that I missed. Thanx for your help and time! Earl Potter |

No such device. If you are using the ide boot disk you still need ext2 fs modules which are in http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/2.4.5/fsmods.tgz. You could put your fsmods.tgz on your second floppy or untar the package and just put ext2.o on the boot disk (assuming it fits). Then add ext2.o to \tux\config\modules on the boot floppy to get it loaded at boot time (hopefully) > 222222 > i copied the package vi.tgz on a floppy an said yes to the question if i have > a further floppy at boottime. > but starting vi produces the message: > vi: error in loading shared libraries: libncurses.so.5: cannot open shared > objectfile: no such file or directory You need the term.tgz package and the baselib.tgz package. See http://trinux.sf.net/tools.html for Manditory Packages I agree the documentation needs work, unfortunately no time to work on it. - mdf |

Hi, Matthew and Lucas - thanx 4 yr replies! I will print out and tinker with your suggestions, but I wonder if my problem isn't deeper...I read the section "Fixed Disk Package Loading" section in your doc... I have downloaded "trinux-0.80rc2-ide.img" and made a disk from it, but when I boot from it it ends with a screenful (and I think it's scrolling) of lines which say: tar: bad tar header, skipping from that point, there is nothing I can do but cold-boot the cpu. Before that, from among the stuff that scrolls by rather quickly, I can see stuff like 'found hda1'...no packages found, etc... I have created a directory at the root of my D: drive named trinux, and after floppy-booting with it empty, I tried copying the contents of the NET floppy's tux directory (my NET floppy works well), but to no avail! I strongly suspect (and many readers probably know already) that mine is a "newbie" problem, so I appreciate your help and patience! I've been working with computers since the first PC and know DOS inside out, but now I feel like I'm starting all over!! Hi I'm "Linux-challenged", but am learning...so please excuse my questions if they appear too obvious! Please note that I have printed and read the "documentation" on both LaBrea and Trinux, but find that it leaves many questions unanswered, which brings me to question one: 1) Is there any more documentation on Trinux than what is available in the "Configure It" and "Use it" sections of the Trinux page? (note that the "The Basics" page appears to be truncated 2) the savehome and savecfg commands return a "command not found" message. I would like to save my config and drivers so that I don't have to dl them from the net all the time. 3) is it possible to use one of my hard disk partitions? I would prefer to use my drive D: (both my C: and D: are FAT) 4) re LabreA: I have followed the instructions on how to run it - and it appears to be running - but how do I see what it is doing? (I suspect it has something with accessing "syslog", but I don't know how to do that, newbie that I am). It would be great if there were some sort of switch or console which showed results in 'realtime' (and I don't mean tcpdump!) Many tnx to any and all, and especially Tom Liston, Matthew Franz and all the good ppl devoted to these great endeavours! Sorry this not better documented, but... If you just create two files on the boot floppy in \tux\pkg\labrea exclude hardexclude they will automatically be copied to the "real" files that Labrea uses. and then if you want to start labrea automatically, you can put the command(s) in \tux\init\last from the labrea package startup script in /etc/init.d/labrea: if [ -f /etc/tux/pkg/labrea/exclude ] then echo "Found exclude list, copying to /etc/LaBreaExclude" cp /etc/tux/pkg/labrea/exclude /etc/LaBreaExclude foundit=1 fi if [ -f /etc/tux/pkg/labrea/hardexclude ] then echo "Found exclude list, copying to /etc/LaBreaHardExclude" cp /etc/tux/pkg/labrea/hardexclude /etc/LaBreaHardExclude foundit=1 fi You can also just use labrea.tgz because they are same file (both v2.0). I need to delete the labrea2.tgz package > Hi there, > > I'm trying to get a system on a floppy, that will boot and run. Hi, Matthew, thanks for your software. It gives me a little playground to learn without worrying about damaging anything. My question is about setting a proxy server for snarf. We run a static IP network here and access the Internet through a proxy server. I can get everything ready to run except for snarf because it can't connect to the server. The snarf docs do mentionn HTTP_PROXY environment variable. I am either not figuring out how to implement that or am just no knowledgeable enough. thanks for anyone who can help. --Will ===== Will Shattuck Computer Support Specialist Proteus, Inc - http://www.proteusinc.org wi...@pr... |

Or is there something else I > didn't think of. > There's no good reason it couldn't be used as a firewall/router (actually thats what I'm using for my cable modem right now) its just that Trinux is not as plug and play as LRP, Freesco, or the other distros that are designed explicitly for firewall/routing. If you want to use it as such just, add netfilter.tgz and iptables.tgz to \tux\config\kpkglist on the boot floppy and then add whatever iptables commands to \tux\init\last and it should work just fine. -mdf |

In the doco, it says "Trinux is /not/ designed to be your DSL/Cablemodem router/firewall.". Is this because it is not secure enough, or because there is not a real good router or firewall package available. Or is there something else I didn't think of. |
