Folks, Just released another ISO. This has experimental support for PCMCIA (when has trinux *not* been experiment) NICs. I've successfully tested this on the following cards: 3Com 3C574TX 3Com 3C589D Xircom CBE2-100 (tulip) Xircom Realport (Cardbus) RBEM56G-100 (tulip) I was unable to get the non-carbus Realport (xirc2ps) to work All of these were tested on a Thinkpad T22. I fixed the annoying filename problem that affected the previous ISOs. I need to specify -R -J (for Rock Ridge and Joliet) for mkisofs. I also cleaned up some of the annoying debugging messages from the linuxrc. See http://trinux.sf.net/release or http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/boot/ (not sure which is slower) BTW, I've finally got the old trinux.org DNS under control. If anybody wants to host a mirror site and wants a location.trinux.org site let me know. Next, on to wireless :) and updating the documentation for all the changes :(. For those that are interested in helping out with or learning to use wireless tools, I've just created a new trinux-wireless email list. Thanks to all the folks who provided feedback on the last ISO. - mdf |

Well, It's not the memory... Intel machine, 128MB ram, same thing... Failed packages during boot: term baselib nmap system netconf (others that scrolled off the screen) All failed saying gunzip: Invalid gzip magic.... Pretty much all that worked was what was on the floppy. (dhcpcd and dnslibs) When I got the vi package to work one time before, I changed the server from the trinux one to one of the mirrors, but others from that mirror failed too.... --Matt > > It is possible that the cause may be elsewhere. > > If your trinux system runs out of ramdisk, I believe that it keeps quiet > about it. Okay.. I guess there's something screwy with the packages at http://www.trinux.org/pkg/ I removed that url from the /tux/config/server file on the floppy and just left the io.com one and rebooted and it's working fine now. --Matt > > It is possible that the cause may be elsewhere. > > If your trinux system runs out of ramdisk, I believe that it keeps quiet > about it. If you want to restart pcmcia, killall cardmgr and then run cardmgr #/etc/init.d/pcmcia echo "Starting PCMCIA card services" insmod pcmcia_core insmod i82365 insmod ds echo "Waiting for kernel modules to settle..." sleep 4 echo "Starting cardmgr...." cardmgr echo "Waiting some more...." sleep 3 echo "Attempting to configure network..." netcfg You'll also need http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/2.4.5/pcmcia-pcnet.tgz 2) I updated the /etc/pcmcia/config file in the pcmcia-bin.tgz package available withint http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/ 3) The ability to override files (especially config files) within a tarball is something I'm thinking about and your question is a good example why. Basically what I'm planning is a "virtual" etc directory on the boot device (/tux/config/vetc) that would contain config files that would overwrite what is inside the tarball. - mdf |

It could be the memory question or the package might not exist on the server # free should tell you if your ramdisks are full. # cat /etc/tux/config/server will tell you where the packages are being loaded from Or it probably does this if the package doesn't exist # snarf http://trinux.sf.net/pkg/pkgname.tgz if this fails, then the package doesn't exist or has been renamed - mdf > It is possible that the cause may be elsewhere. > > If your trinux system runs out of ramdisk, I believe that it keeps quiet > about it. Thanks for the reply. I'm not in front of the system (it's at home), but I'll tell you what I know. The machine is a AMD-based older box. 48MB ram. I'm booting from the trinux-0.80rc2-net.img floppy. I didn't get the impression that any of the packages that the bootable floppy attempts to load actually loaded. I can't say any loaded for sure because when it works, it doesn't complain. The only package I successfully loaded manually myself was vi. But then, of course, it wouldn't run due to dependency issues. The network was working properly - as I was able to manually pull down packages with snarf.. just trying to gunzip them failed with the aforementioned error. I'll provide the df output later, and I'll most definitely let you know what works and what doesn't. :) --Matt > > It is possible that the cause may be elsewhere. > > If your trinux system runs out of ramdisk, I believe that it keeps quiet > about it. It is possible that the cause may be elsewhere. If your trinux system runs out of ramdisk, I believe that it keeps quiet about it. If you are attempting to get packages, and some fail, it could be the large packages that are failing, due to insufficient resources (memory or ramdisk). Trinux is special because it runs in a resource restricted environment. It assumes that the operator knows this. Error checking and the meaningful text messages can sometimes double the size of an executable. Trinux must be kept small, and sometimes this is at the expense of even minimal diagnostics. Your request for help is very short on details. A short list of 3 packages that failed, and 3 that succeed, could help determine the cause. Also, try to include some parameters of your running system. Most importantly, the total amount of installed ram, and the output of the df (disk free) command, would really help. And please ACK the list, when a suggested fix does the deed. It is most frustrating to see several posts of a problem, and never a final "That fixed it!". Thanks! Using the latest boot floppy, when attempting to get most of the packages over the network, I get: gunzip: Invalid gzip magic And the package doesn't load. It works for some packages on the mirrors, but only a couple. I saw a post about this back in March, but the suggested correction didn't help here. Any ideas? --Matt |

I'll go ahead and add the standalone binary to the one of the packages (probably baselib.tgz) vs. mucking with busybox and then the next time I rebuilt busybox I'll add it because I'm pretty sure it isn't compiled in, even though it appears there is a symlink. - mdf > Hello, > > Do you know please what is needed to chroot command: > > chroot ...: applet ot found > > chroot is linked to busybox; other commands linked to busybox seems OK > (nslookup, reboot). > > ps: on Slackware chroot is included in sh_utils package, but i do'nt > find this package in Trinux packages. > > Thanks > > -- > > Jean Cou?dic > E N P C - D I T |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi Matthew, Just tested this on one of our server boxes that has 4 NICs in it. If found 3 out of the 4. The one it didn't find was an Intel PRO/1000 Fiber NIC. I believe there are kernel drivers for this, you just might no be trying to insmod that particular one. I'll try it out on a couple of other stock machines we have here and let you know if I find any problems. Howdy, I've released a small .iso for testing if anbody has the time/inclination. It is based on 2.4.19 and my latest initrd.gz. It has booted fine on my Thinkpad, VMware, and an old K6--but I'd like wider testing before doing even a snapshot release on sourceforge. It loops through and attempts to insmod a half-dozen or so of the most common NICs (it looks like I forgot a few old ISAs, though). This does *not* have support for any PCMCIA NiCs. Once this appears to be stable, I'll get to that. see: http://trinux.sf.net/release/ http://www.io.com/~mdfranz/trinux/boot/ It is 3sep02-2419.iso (with matching .md5) and it is about 6mb. Feedback/flames are welcome. I know there is still some funkiness--for example some of the packages are getting loaded twice (I think). - mdf |

Sorry that I cannot help with your specific error, but I do have some insight, and a funny story to tell.... In the old days, it was very common for UNIX source code to contain all sorts of commentary, quips and often the naming of variables used within the source was quite creative. The variable name "luser", representing a local user, and making a derrogatory slap at the same time, comes immediately to mind. Often, an error condition that should never never occur will have a diagnostic message that is irreverent and funny. Unfortunately, for those of us who read source, these departures are becoming less frequent as the code is "sanitized" for public comsumption. Anyway, about 15 years ago, while developing a 80286 version of AIX under contract for IBM, we encountered the following scenario.... A level 2 VP, was demonstrating a beta version of the port to some executives and engineers at IBM when the following message appeared. "Heat shield failure upon re-entry, shutting down" .... They removed the cover from the case and even placed fans adjacent to the box to help cool the unit, but to no avail... It turns out that one of the kernel programmers had worked also at JPL, and was coding some intense driver routine where interrupts had to be disabled. This makes the code "non-reentrant", meaning that it must not be interrupted. Switching tasks during this period of suspended interrupts is forbidden, and should never never occur (except in beta :-). So this programmer inserted his own error message, which should never never be seen that included a bit of humor. The code was "re-entered" and the machine halted. The part about the heat shield was a diversion for the readers of the source. Referring to the heat shield on the re-entry vehicle under development at Jet Propulsion Labs. The results were quite unexpected however, and fortunately, the VP had a sense of humor, and enjoyed telling this story. I think the folks at IBM also found it funny... Ergo...... "The intruments are crazy eject eject!" probably means that you have stumbled upon a condition that should never never occur in the low level driver. Any other diagnostic would probably be greek to you anyway. Have a look at the source for that module, you will likely see more funny quips and quotes. I once saw a bit of code that contained a flaming diatribe on the poor programming skills of a fellow programmer (who was explicitly named in the source) and how crappy his code was and how it was making it impossible to do this correctly. It was a funny read. I am sure it was removed many years ago... On Tue, 27 Aug 2002, Ben Smith wrote: > I am trying to load Trinux with a 3com fast ethernet > pcmcia card model 3ccfe575bt-d. I am trying to load Trinux with a 3com fast ethernet pcmcia card model 3ccfe575bt-d. As far as I can tell this nic is support and the drivers are apart of the default package. I get a strange error about something being crazy when it tries to detect eth0. The exact message is interface eth0 does not exist! The instruments are crazy eject eject! I am not a linux pro but this error seems like an inside joke to me. Please help Ben __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Dear Mr/Ms, I have read some information about Trinux on the trinux website. But I still have some questions about it I would like to be answered. namely: 1. What are ROM sizes required for trinux? 2. Can I easily port Trinux to the Intel 80960SA processor? 3. What kind of I/O is supported (e.g. FireWire, USB)? I am looking forward to hear from you soon. Kind Regards, Maurice Maissan |

Hello Trinux Experts, What could be causing my Trinux /bin/sh to exit without warning? Event sequence: 1) Boot Trinux net floppy 2) Mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt/hd1 (reiserfs) 3) Mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hd2 (reiserfs) 4) cd /mnt/hd1 5) tar --preserve -xzvf wsinstall-tpl.tgz 2> /tmp/tar.err 6) tar output scrolls up the screen... 7) towards the middle to end of the "untar" before tar finishes I get: Please press Enter to activate this console. Sometimes tar will finish but the shell still gets exited. =20 I get know messages at all nothing in tar.err or anything displayed to the screen explaining what caused the shell to exit. /var/log/messages just tells me "/bin/sh - exited." Things I have tried: killed crond find / -name core (no core files found) different boot floppy different tar file different hardware setterm -blank 0, in case the screenblank is flaky??? I am using 0.80rc2 Trinux release: Any guess, ideas or the answer would be greatly appreciated!!!!
