Currently in Squirrel theres no way to have a "heartbeat" sent to the server, it would be possible for somebody to write a plugin to do this. The connection to the database is under the control of the JDBC driver that you are using so you'd need to check the documentation for your driver to see if it is possible to piggyback your existing ssh connection. Although it doesn't solve your problem there is a "Reconnect" option on the session menu which will attempt to close the existing connection and open a new one using the user name and password that you used to establish the initial connection. This would be more convenient than going back to the aliases list and reslogging on. -- Colin Bell http://squirrel-sql.sf.net |

I am attempting to connection to a remote oracle database over the internet and through the remote network's firewall. I can establish a connection, but because I am going through the remote network's fire wall I have only one minute of idle time before the connection is terminated. I can ssh through the remote network's fire wall and the timeout does not occur because my local ssh client(Putty) sends keep alive packets every 15 seconds. Is there a way to keep my connection in squirrel alive automatically using some sort of sql heartbeat? Or is there a way I can make squirrel use the connection established by my local ssh client? Hi Michael, You need Johans SQL Scripts plugin. This will allow you to save/restore SQL commands to/from text files as well as generate CREATE TABLE and INSERT scripts. Check out the plugins page at the SQuirreL site http://squirrel-sql.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=plugins.html -- Colin Bell http://squirrel-sql.sf.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael Hieb <mh...@ny...> Date: Friday, November 22, 2002 3:04 am Subject: [Squirrel-sql-users] Accessing queries stored in text files... > I tend to keep my fav queries in text files e.g. fav.sql. I tend to keep my fav queries in text files e.g. fav.sql. I can see that Squirrel will allow me to dump my session to a text file, but this isn't quite the same thing. I would like to write out my sql scratchboard and read it in later. Did I miss how to do this? Other than that everything works like a charm. Michael |

I tend to keep my fav queries in text files e.g. fav.sql. I can see that Squirrel will allow me to dump my session to a text file, but I don't see how to read it back in later (except editor+copy/paste). Did I miss it? Other than that everything works like a charm. Michael |

Hi folks, I'm well into the work on making the ContentTab tables editable, and as part of that work I'm going to have to deal with a couple of issues of how the data is formatted and displayed. Squirrel's default operation is to display binary data types as <Binary> or <Other> unless the user sets the Session Properties to show those fields as Strings, in which case they show something like: 1001010010 When a table is editable, the "<Binary>" representation cannot be directly edited, which means that when you enter a binary field, the data would have to automatically switch representations just in case you wanted to edit it. This can be done, but it would be simpler to implement and simpler for the user if there was only one representation. An easy way to do this is to remove the options in the Session Properties and always display the data in the String form. So my first set of questions are: - Does anyone prefer to see "<Binary>" in the field instead of the actual data, and if so, why? - How upset would you be if we removed the options and set it so that you always see the actual data? The second issue is this. If I am editing a nullable VARCHAR field and I remove all of the characters from the visible display and save it, does that mean: - set the field to null, or - put a zero-length string into the table? My suggestion is that when you remove all the characters, that means a zero-length string, and if you hit the delete key again, the field toggles between a zero-length string an a <null>. Would that work for you? That raises another thought, which is how to deal with that "Oh #*@%&" moment just after you have accidentially touched a field that you did not want to change and you don't remember how it looked originally. Ome way might be to have a right-click menu item for "Restore original Cell contents", but that may be hard to implement. Another approach could be that when you delete everything from the cell and hit the delete key again, the original contents are restored. With a nullable field, this would cycle through the possibilities as follows: - delete the data in the cell => the data is zero-length - hitting delete key again => <Null> - hitting delete key again => original contents of the field Would this be ok? Glenn PS. Sorry for cross-posting, but I haven't seen much activity in the user's forum. I'm not sure if there are folks watching that list who are not also on the developer's list, and I wanted to include everyone. |

Hi, Is there a way to execute an sql-based text file non-interactively from command-line using the squirrel-sql client? I'm very new to this, but like it so far. I've installed the sql scripts and the session script plugins, but would like to automate script execution non-interactively after interactive testing. If this is not foreseen, do you know of a command line based jdbc client I could use instead? thanks in advance, Anke -- +++ GMX - Mail, Messaging & more http://www.gmx.net +++ NEU: Mit GMX ins Internet. After a year of development the stable version of 1.1 is finally available. It can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=28383&release_id=121639 Many thanks to all the people who contributed to this release. The full change log will be copied up to the website tonight. The major changes include: Plugin Architecture Added ------------------------- SQuirreL now supports plugins. These are applications written in Java thatrun within SQuirreL. This allows developers to enhance the functionality of SQuirreL without having to rebuild the SQuirreL application itself. Some of the plugins that have been written for SQuirreL include the jEdit plugin, Look and Feel Plugin, MySQL plugin, Oracle Plugin, Session Scripts plugin, SQL Scripts plugin, and the SQL Validator plugin. SQL Execution Enhanced ---------------------- Multiple SQL statements can be executed simultaneoulsy or sequentially. The results of these queries are now displayed in multiple tabs and these tabs can be "torn off" Many more data types are now displayed. Undo/redo support has been added to the SQL entry area. Meta data is now available for the results of SQL execution. Object Tree Enhancements ------------------------ The object tree code has been rewritten and now executes faster. JDBC Drivers ------------ Multiple jar files (and directories) can now be specified for a JDBC driver. You can now list the JDBC driver classes within a jar file. General ------- The licence for the application has been changed from GPL to LGPL. SQL execution and object tree expansion now run in separate threads so that the user interface is still responsive. Tables can now be sorted by clicking on the column headers. Full column data in tables can now be displayed in a popup window by double clicking in the column. -- Colin Bell http://squirrel-sql.sf.net |

Version 1.1rc2 of SQuirreL SQL Client has been released. This is intended to be the last release candidate before the stable version of 1.1 is released. Downloads are here http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=28383&release_id=118650 List of changes: Enhancements ------------ - Add default catalog selection to popup menu - Add plugin class path to application dump. - Allow for some drivers that don't return 'guest' as a schema for Microsoft SQL and Sybase. - Catalogs and Schemas tabs added to the session node. - Catalogs and schemas added to session dump. - Drivers and Aliases windows can now be closed. Bug Fixes --------- - Fix shell script to work with Cygwin. - Fix NullPointerException when changing output type for result sets in New Session Properties dialog. - Fix Copy cmd in tables so that if only a single column selected it doesn't put all the rows on one line. - Make tree node refresh work. - Fix line wrapping in multiple line labels. - Allow for spaces in %CLASSPATH% in squirrel-sql.bat (again). - Save and restore current catalog, transaction isolation and auto-commit settings when executing the Session/Reconnect commmand. -- Colin Bell http://squirrel-sql.sf.net |

Hi, Just wanted to save people a bit of time if they're trying to run SQuirreL and they have spaces in their JAVA_HOME and/or CLASSPATH variables. Just add quotes around those sections (see below) in your batch file. "%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java" -cp "squirrel-sql.jar;lib\jdom-b4.jar;lib\xerces.jar;lib\skinlf.jar;%CLASSPATH%" com.bigfoot.colbell.squirrel.Main It's obvious once you realize what's wrong, but I spent a long time looking for other problems. Cheers, Brian |

Please forgive my long-windedness... Another possible option is to have an options to 'spawn' a MDI child window into a separate SDI window. I remember seeing an application (the name escapes me at the moment) that allowed you to do such a thing (i.e. take the contents of a JInteralFrame and dump them into a JFrame). > I think SQuirreL is in the second category: only one window necessary to > do work, multiple connections can be thought of pretty independently, so > should be in fully independent windows. The grouping of resultsets I'd agree with Scott here. As a DBA/developer, I am often connected to multiple databases at the same time. I'd like to have a separate window for each connection. As well, I use virtual-desktops, and having each connection in a separate window allows me move different connections to different desktops. > Anyway, thanks for your responses. Bug Fixes --------- - Reload Metal Look and Feel when first loading SQuirreL so that the "Blue" theme is used. - Position focus to the text area when first displaying the HTML viewer window. - Stop driver maintenance window from resizing when jars added/removed. - Improve error handling when loading drivers and aliases. - Incorrect error message was displayed in View Help command (Glenn Griffin). - Fix Nullpointer exception in HTML viewer under JDK1.3. - CLOB/BLOB columns weren't handled correctly on metadata and Content tabs. - The line/column number displayed for the SQL entry area now starts from 1,1 not 0,0 - Make multiple line label use the same font as static text controls not editable text controls. - Links in the Help file now work (Victor Ott). - Fix deadlock when viewing logs. - Add missing "contributors" file for About Box. Plugin API ---------- - Move metadata methods to metadata classes. Other ----- - Don't display icons in menus. - Cleanup ResultSetMetaData handling. - Make the installation window resizeable. jEdit Plugin Changes ==================== - "TRIGGER" is now recognized as an SQL keyword. SQL Validator Plugin Changes ============================ - Add Connect and Disconnet options to the menus system. - Move validation menu options to their own hierarchical menu off the Session menu. - Only display logon menu and open a session to the web service if a session doesn't already exist. - Make login dialog resizeable. - Cleaned up the preference panels. - Updated for SQuirrel SQL Client 1.1rc1. |

Okay, I'm going to take a shot at trying to convince you. ;) I'd be happy with a preference (though I'm likely to disagree with you about which the default should be). Please forgive my long-windedness... I agree that subwindow MDIs are better in one class of applications - ones like Netbeans, Photoshop, PageMaker, and Oracle Forms/Reports where you need a lot of closely related windows for one task.Typically there's a main document window and a bunch of tool palettes. You only want to show/hide them together. In all other cases, I hate the conventional subwindow form of MDI. Usability research tends to back me up here - that's why its deprecated in KDE, most new Microsoft products (Office), etc. I think SQuirreL is in the second category: only one window necessary to do work, multiple connections can be thought of pretty independently, so should be in fully independent windows. The grouping of resultsets within a connection with tabs (another form of MDI, I'd say) is completely appropriate for several reasons: - I potentially want several open at once - They're very related - I don't want the hassle of managing their windows - Only being able to see one at a time is not a problem, especially since switching is very quick. In SQuirreL's current state, it pops up a large window and the connection only uses part of it. You go to maximize it and find the subwindow buttons are completely unlike native windows, adding a moment of confusion. (Really, even when I've seen such things a million times, it still slows me down.) Once you maximize, there's a few extra lines taking up screen real estate: the main toolbar, the subwindow frame, and the main status bar. (I realize two of those can be turned off. I'm talking about first use only.) If you shrink the main window, the subwindow doesn't shrink with it. You have to scroll over and fix it. My ideal: you start SQuirreL. You get the driver manager/database aliases stuff dialog stuff, open a new connection. A single window pops up. If you want a new connection, you do "New Connection" in the menu and the same thing is repeated independently. For me, this is a lot simpler in the common case of one connection at a time. And I'd argue that it's still simpler for multiple connections at a time. > Sounds like something that could be put into the Oracle plugin. Its also not > something I'd probably do myself (I'm no Oracle expert) so if you are > interested in enhancing Squirrel this could be a good starting point. > Squirrel is starting to be used in a lot of Oracle shops and theres a lot of > oracle specific functionality that could be added to the plugin. Let me know > if you are interested. Hmm. I have had this inexplicable urge to do GUI programming lately. And my first hunch is that it would be a lot easier for me to start here than restructing any of the existing stuff and trying not to break plugins that use all those listeners. So maybe I will. Anyway, thanks for your responses. I'm encouraged and very much looking forward to ditching Oracle's various SQL-Plus, SQL Worksheet, and SQL Scratchpad things. Hi, I've been playing around with Squirrel SQL a bit. I'm hoping to use it in place of Oracle's stuff. First, I think current CVS is ready, as it's a definite improvement over the last released version for me. When I tried 0.9.6, it took a very long time to connect (I think it was trying to load all of the metadata right away, correct? I'm connecting over the Internet to a large Oracle database, so that's not a good idea.) It's better now. Also, I think the old one leaked cursors - I got maximum cursors exceeded messages when browsing metadata. That doesn't mean I think it's perfect, though. I've got some problems/interface comments/feature requests: - Typing "./squirrel-sql.sh" doesn't work for me right in the dist directory unless I set INSTALL_PATH=`pwd`. Was this supposed to be substituted in the ant file? If so, it didn't work. - Ideally, just a "java -jar squirrel-sql.jar" would work, so I wouldn't need the shell script/batch file at all. I think you can have classpaths in the meta-inf. If not, the other jars would have to be included in that one. This would be better because batch files/java pop up unnecessary terminal windows on Windows. Clicking on the jar file directly launches javaw, which doesn't have that problem. - It's slow when browsing metadata. It would be nice if it cached more (column-level information particularly) so looking at it a second time would be quick. - IMHO auto commit should be off by default. Or at least there should be a preference for it per-database alias, not per-session, so I don't need to toggle it every time I connect. - I'm glad to see it doesn't block waiting for a database response. This was what started me looking for an alternative to the Oracle 8i SQL Worksheet to begin with. Killing the program when I forgot a join condition was not pleasant. - The metadata views show a lot of useless columns. Ones that are consistently <null>: schema on PostgreSQL (even 7.3b1 - I guess they haven't updated their JDBC drivers), table_cat on Oracle. And some things not really intended for humans (data_type; the numbers mean nothing to me; I just want type_name). If these all went away, it would be easier to find what I'm looking for. - I loved the way it keeps around multiple resultsets in tabs, but I think it could be even better: * I tend to work with a couple queries at once and refine them. It'd be nice if a new tab replaced the current one unless I hit ctrl-T (as in Mozilla). This way, older versions of the current query would go away. * And also, if the SQL was per-tab as well, so I could refine a couple queries in parallel without doing as much copying and pasting. * I'd like to see each SQL tab go into the top-level tab bar instead of the one "SQL" one and subtabs of that. Maybe not conceptually quite as clean - "Objects" would be different from all the others then - but less clutter. - I hate the MDI interface/subwindows. I usually only work with one database at once - I only want that window up. Even when I do work with two databases, I'd prefer they be entirely separate windows. The connect stuff could be a dialog box that pops up when you first start the program and when you hit ctrl-N or something (new connection). - It would be nice if the statement division stuff was smarter. I'd like to be able to type in PL/SQL blocks without changing the statement seperator. If it could do everything as the Oracle SQL Worksheet 8i does (not the 9i; blank lines in "create table" commands confuse it; grr), I'd be really, really happy. - Feature request: Oracle query execution plans, like their "SQL Scratchpad" in the "Enterprise Manager Console" has. SQL Scratchpad really annoys me, but as is I've gotta use it occasionally. "explain plan for" dumps all this info into a table, but the SQL Scratchpad is the only thing I've seen that does a decent job of formatting it. (The only second is this utlxplp.sql thing that does text-based formatting.) Hope those are useful. If I'm feeling ambitious later and have time, I might try to implement some of my suggestions. No promises. Scott |

Hi Jason, The MySQL plugin isn't a MySQL JDBC driver, instead it add some MySQL specific functionality to Squirrel. You need to be running the 1.1 version of Squirrel to use plugins. You need to download a JDBC driver for MySQL. I would suggest using MM.MySQL https://sourceforge.net/projects/mmmysql/ If you are using a recent version of 1.1 then the Help option from the Help menu should tell you all you need to know about using JDBC drivers with Squirrel. If you are using Squirrel 1.0 then read the files within the doc directory within your Squirrel program directory. Because of the amount of spam received this mailing list is now "subscribers only" so if you have any further questions please subscribe to the list before sending a message. Thanks John. I took the liberty of forwarding this to the users list. You're quite right, SQuirreL 1.0 required JDK 1.2 and SQuirreL 1.1 requires JDK 1.3. It does run on the Mac but requires OSX.
