Sounds good. Only issue with Tomcat is that we should demonstrate transaction management using Spring, rather than relying on JDBC autocommit. (I will try to add an implementation using AOP transaction management to demonstrate that as well.) Tomcat doesn't come with JTA out of the box, but can be integrated with Tyrex. Just wondering how best we can help readers do this. I'm planning to work with Orion myself (WebLogic in my day job), but of course it's not open source. Hi everyone, Please come up each of you with a one or two sentence mission statement for Spring. This would help for both the logo and web site. My attempt : The Spring Framework aims to provide an industrial-strength framework for J2EE applications. It provides abstractions for configuration, data access, web tier MVC setup, and more. Hi Brett, I like the idea of a web page. We should have a Planned Features section anywayfor things planned in future releases, and a TODO section for things to be done in the current release. We need to show the world that we know where we are going. I think it's important in the long term, so it would be great to let developers know what's planned in the way of GUI tools. Regards, Rod |

Hi Rod, Isabelle. It's good to hear that you like the idea of a config editor for Spring. It will help me learn a few new tricks in the process so I hope you don't need something too quickly. I will do my best to develop the concept and incorporate all your ideas. If possible, can I grab a page on the spring website to document what I am doing? Setting up a WIKI would be ideal and others could use it too. Cheers Brett |

Travis, I agree with Dmitriy: data access is only part of the story. Spring today includes a lot more, such as: - beans-based configuration management - JDBC abstraction - transaction management abstraction - AOP packages, which will soon offer declarative transaction-management without the need for EJB - highly modular MVC web solution - package simplifying accessing EJBs Overall there's a strong emphasis on JavaBeans and interfaces, as discussed in the book, and it aims to simplify use of J2EE. I like the colours and the 2-colour SpringFramework on the right with a shaded blue bar underneath. However, the text should change. Maybe we need a slogan: something would look good where you have "Practical Data Access" but I don't think we have suitable text yet. Maybe leave the bar unworded for now and add text later when we think of something. I like the idea of including a spring somewhere. I think the character on the left could be reworked a bit. Not sure what the blue puddle to the left of him/her is and the datastore text should probably go. I can certainly see this logo working in well with an overall site design. My original thoughts for a logo were based around spring the season--maybe based on a photo of budding trees or the like. But I badly lack graphical flair. Juergen, Yann et al: thoughts on this? I like the logo. Is there any way to perhaps incorporate a "puzzle piece", "building blocks", "scaffold", or "building foundation" concept into it? When I think of framework, I think of any of the above. -----Original Message----- From: spr...@li... Isabelle, This works well for me. I have been using Tomcat (4.1.18) and mySQL (3.23.53) for my own experimentations with Spring using Java 1.4.1_01. I think it is a good idea to stay away from advanced database features and use only very basic, least common denominator SQL for this demo/tutorial as much as possible. This would make it easy for potential users to modify it for use with their own preferred database. I understand perfectly the need to build the demo in an incremental fashion. I think we need to have a good idea of what it is we want to accomplish in each of the stages and in the demo/tutorial as a whole. It seems to me that the demo/tutorial is an important sales tool for the framework. As such, we should have some pretty clear goals of what features and advantages of using the framework are to be demonstrated in the demo/tutorial. It should reinforce whatever is going to be in the Spring Introduction and/or Mission Statement page at the website. I will get started by laying out an application file/directory structure and Ant build script. I will also start listing display pages and use cases. I will assume the following unless it is otherwise agreed: The view technology will be JSP and JSTL (no scriptlets). Production quality code and exception handling should be the rule. The pages, at least in the initial stage will be very simple views without style sheets, headers/footers/menus, or internationalization. Comments please. I looked at the link Luke provided, and I really like the output from Maven. We should try to incorporate this in our project and web site. I assume that we easily could have a nightly build set up, so that we could check to see that all the test passed the next morning. Hi Ken, If you feel up to it, get started on the petclinic. The idea is to develop something a la Petstore, only it's a pet clinic this time. I have the tables script for Oracle, but actually I feel it would be better to do the demo on mySQL primarily. I can get you a tables script for mySQL by tomorrow evening my time. The table structure so far is not complete, as it doesn't allow for owners to make appointments for their pets. But we should start out simply, so from the point of view of the vets treating animals. Since we are not going to be using beans and complex transactions in the beginning, I think we could go for tomcat as a web container. It's important that you build the demo in incremental steps called stages, and that each stage consist of a set of source code, build files and documentation. You can do the documentation free form in a text file, and I'll take care of incorporating it into the master set of docs. Make sure you explain everything you do in code, it's better to have too much explanations than too little. Another question. Would it be helpful to have a setter for PlatformTransactionManager property on the TransactionTemplate class, so it could be configurable through a bean factory? Thanks, Dmitriy. |

Hello everybody. One question. Should the com.interface21.transaction.[subpackages] be included in the spring-core.jar ? Thanks, Dmitriy. |

>Is there a way to code the engine so that it can be packaged as both an eclipse plug-in and a swing gui? Eclipse uses SWT, rather than Swing (which is why it looks good and performs well IMHO). However, I agree it would be great if it was possible to have a standalone SWT implementation as well as the plugin. Rod |

Hi all,
I've nothing against eclipse plug-ins, but would like to suggest that we build tools so that they can run stand-alone as well. I for example don't use eclipse (use an editor), other people use commercial IDE's.
Is there a way to code the engine so that it can be packaged as both an eclipse plug-in and a swing gui?
