That's one yeah... There's also a 'buildafterbuildfailed' flag on the
project element, which you can set to true or false. If false, if a
build fails, it'll wait with a new build until somebody commits, if
true, it keeps trying to build... If your build is deterministic (which
it should be of course), buildafterbuildfailed can be set to false...

About the emails, if you're using the htmlemail in the publishers
element, it'll indeed be quite big, but there's also another emailer,
which just generates a link to the results page (if you have set that up
also)...

Hi Alef,

I'm still finding my way around CC, but there's a "spamwhilebroken" 
which I think can be used to disable repeated notifications of a broken 
build. The mails are too big just now anyway, so I need to find a way to 
cut down the CC report first... and then wait for someone to break the 
build :).

buildAfterBuildFailed property of CC is false (we've got that turned on
here, and I'm getting mails each hour if build fails :)

I've set up cruise control to run Maven so it should be running on a 
regular basis and the reports should be up to date. I've also got rid of 
the test errors by including xerces and some other jars in the project.

Hi Michael - I've pasted the example configuration below. That's one of the
nice things of the Glue-Spring integration - there's no coding involved.
When we did this (back in spring of 2003), we were able to expose
Spring-configured objects as web services with no coding, just a little
configuration. Only thing we had to do was create a class with a static
method "getBean" that provides access to the BeanFactory (or
ApplicationContext) that you're using, similar to the BeanFactoryBootstrap
in org.springframework.beans.factory.support. We actually already had a
class like this, since we earlier had a need to have a singleton that makes
the ApplicationContext available (we weren't using Spring's MVC, so we
didn't have access to something like WebApplicationContext).

So assuming you have a class called something like "BeanFactoryAccessor" and
a static method called "getBean" on it, which would just access the
BeanFactory and call getBean on that, and assuming you have an object in
Spring called "MyService" that you want Glue to publish as a web service,
the configuration in the Glue services file is just:

<service>
  <factory>
    <class>com.foo.BeanFactoryAccessor</class>
    <method>getBean</method>
    <args>
      <arg>MyService</arg>
    </args>
  </factory>
  ... other Glue configuration attributes...
</service>

And that's all there is to it. It's really nice because you don't have to
use any Glue or Spring API's in the object that you want to publish. Check
out the Glue docs to learn about the services config file. You pretty much
just drop it into your webapp under WEB-INF, and when you start it up, Glue
will publish the web service and then load objects via Spring to handle web
service requests.

FYI, we've migrated our AOP framework to CGLIB2 today, also shipping =
Hibernate 2.1.1 now and building Spring against it. This will be the =
basis for 1.0 M4, to be released mid next week. So there shouldn't be =
any potential for Hibernate 2.1/CGLIB2 issues anymore!

This is very similar to what I use and recommend: keeping the business =
objects that your Web Services access in the root application context, =
if appropriate in a separate definition file.

In contrast to the Axis-specific MessageContext, you can also use the =
JAX-RPC ServiceLifecycle interface: The passed in context object will be =
of type ServletEndpointContext, allowing access to the ServletContext =
and thus to the root WebApplicationContext. This is exactly what =
Spring's new ServletEndpointSupport convenience base class is for: It =
pre-implements that lookup.

Implementing an Axis handler to keep your Web Service implementations =
independent from the Servlet API is not a bad idea. But of course, you =
depend on Axis then, which might be even less desirable. By implementing =
javax.rpc.server.ServiceLifecycle or deriving from =
ServletEndpointSupport, you can deploy your Web Services to any JAX-RPC =
compliant solution as a JAX-RPC "Servlet endpoint".

Regarding wanting to have an axis servlet specific Spring application =
context, I recently had the same problem. Here's how I got round it.

In your web.xml, declare the Spring config(s) you want to be available =

request flow. This handler's invoke() method is along the lines of:

Just to let you know I didn't have time today to try out the
OpenSessionInViewFilter, we've been busy doing a release of Confluence
beta1.  I'll try it out on Monday now.
I remember last week there were some postings about removing/changing
the Spring Wiki, so you might be interested in checking out
http://confluence.atlassian.com. And of course it's using Spring ;-)

I've done some Spring/Axis integration myself in the last couple of =
days. In the course of this, I've added JAX-RPC support classes to =
org.springframework.remoting.jaxrpc (to be committed todays): mainly for =
*accessing* Web Services via JAX-RPC, exposing their proxies for bean =
references (similar to JndiObjectFactoryBean or the existing =
Hessian/Burlap integration). This should work with any JAX-RPC compliant =
Web Service tool, including Axis and GLUE.

Regarding *exporting* Spring beans as Web Services, this is =
unfortunately not possible with the current Web Service tools that I =
know of: They all assume to create their service instances themselves in =
their own dispatcher servlet, without a way to use existing =
pre-configured instances or get invoked via a web MVC framework. So the =
only way that I see is writing specific service classes that delegate to =
Spring-managed business beans, as you seem to have tried too.

I've also added a ServiceEndpointSupport convenience base class to =
org.springframework.remoting.jaxrpc, implementing ServiceLifecycle to =
look up the Spring root web application context. This way, it's as =
convenient as possible in the face of the JAX-RPC service implementation =
model: Implementing Web Service wrappers for existing application =
services is straightforward with it.

I'm not sure what a Spring application context specific to the =
AxisServlet would be good for. What would you set up there? If it's =
generic services, they belong to the root application context, IMO. And =
what kind of Axis-supporting but not generic classes could be managed =
there? Please share your thoughts :-) I recommend to *always* put =
generic services in the root context: You can split the root context =
definition into as many files as you like, via multiple paths as =
"contextConfigLocation" context-param.

I wonder if anyone has integrated axis into Spring Framework, or
if the gurus can shed some lights on this?

We are building a web application with some UI components, but most
of the interfaces are Web Services.  We are using Spring and Axis.
The problem is Axis needs its own servlet so that it knows which
web services classes to call when a web services request comes in.

So for the axis servlet (and my web services classes that get called
it), I can only get hold of the application wide application context
from Spring framework.  I can't seem to have an axis servlet specific
Spring application context.

It seems one should be able to use Spring to handle web services
requests as well.  Spring can just delegate the requests to some
controllers, and the controllers will invoke Axis?

It does seem to be JBoss's problem.  I'll dig up more on jboss
web site to see what's going on.  In the mean time, my requirement
is to be able to connect to two different instances of Oracle dbs,
or two instances of ms sql, so this is working so far for me.

Now some Spring specific question: I really like Spring's way of
configuring all my objects (beans), but how can I dynamically
switch out the data source from one instance of db to the other
one?

If I want my DAO objects to be able to handle both instances
of dbs, what's the best way to dynmically load the right datasource
at request time based on, say, a request parameter or url path
info etc?

Michael - it sounds like you want to have the classes that handle web
service requests loaded by Spring? As you mention, it's most likely not
possible to do this in Axis. If you're not forced to use Axis, you could try
the standard edition of Glue from TheMindElectric (free for most uses,
according to their website). Glue allows you to specify a factory for
loading objects, and it's very straightforward to use the Spring BeanFactory
for loading objects to handle web service requests. And that particular
BeanFactory can be configured specifically for your web services. It's a
very nice, clean integration. Invoking web services is also significantly
easier to do in Glue. If you can switch to Glue, give it a shot, I can find
some sample code too if you need it.

I've committed a first cut of some of the code and scripts.  One or two bits 
of functionality are missing:
 - according to the readme.txt, app server tarballs will be downloaded if 
they don't exist locally : they won't

 - some of the scripts need streamlining.

 - The resin server doesn't shutdown if you build on resin2, use Ctrl-C in 
the command window to terminate the script afterwards.


Proper httpunit tests only exist for petclinic at present, others are being 
worked on, so only skeleton versions of those source files are uploaded.

See the file /autobuilds/readme.txt if you'd like to have a go with it.  
Should you try it out, I'd be interested to know..

 - if the readme is lacking
 - if the windows batch file works correctly (I don't have 'doze on any of 
my home machines to test it)
 - if anything breaks (at least if anything breaks building petclinic on 
tomcat 4/5 or resin 2)

Spring won't mess with the drivers, so I suspect your problem is that you've
specified the wrong driver for one of the container datasources.

Please double check that you've used the right driver for each database.
Also try connecting within JBoss (say from a JSP) to each database to make
sure that it works if Spring is out of the picture.

If you still think the problem is a Spring problem after trying this, please
post your stack trace and we'll take a look.

exception handling.  The exception I got is: cannot connect to

I wonder if this is a JBoss issue, or Spring related?

So for the axis servlet (and my web services classes that get called
it), I can only get hold of the application wide application context
from Spring framework.  I can't seem to have an axis servlet specific
Spring application context.

It seems one should be able to use Spring to handle web services
requests as well.  Spring can just delegate the requests to some
controllers, and the controllers will invoke Axis?

Any thoughts?  Thanks!  /Michael.
