Paul Hammant mentions Spring Framework in his "Inversion of Control Rocks"
article that appears in the Dec 03 Java Developers Journal. 

He mentions the three IoC types with corresponding framework examples:
 Type 1: Avalon, JContainer
 Type 2: Spring Framework, WebWork2, HiveMind
 Type 3: PicoContainer
