I've only recently heard of the benefits of using mod_gzip with slash. Obviously I'm not a slash whiz, and an wondering if there is a howto as to install mod_gzip with slash. Does it require a total recompile of slash and/or apache? Does it only affect apache? etc. If anyone has a little mod_gzip manual for l0sers like me I'd like to know. Thanks, Don. |

In case other people want to know what section their template is being
called from, within the template -
I haven't finished integrating this into my templates yet, but it looks
like I need to make the following changes to implement Jason's suggestion:
1 - in index.pl:
I need to add the last parameter to this SlashDisplay call:
slashDisplay('index', {
is_moderator => scalar
$slashdb->checkForMetaModerator($user),
stories => $Stories,
boxes => $StandardBlocks,
section => $section,
});
this makes the section hash know to the index* templates. Note that the
section key does not exist for the default section, so you will have to
test for its existence in the template if that matters to you
2 - in my case I want to have section specific changes in the header*
template too.
so in Slash.pm (sub header) I changed this call:
if ($section){
my $sectionInfo = getSection($form->{section});
slashDisplay('header',
{section=> $sectionInfo},
);
else {
slashDisplay('header'); #original line
}
and back in index.pl/main I changed the call to header() to:
header($title, $section->{section});
I haven't really checked to see if header() is used anywhere else, but I
think the if statement should keep it from breaking if it is.
3- within the templates, I have this code to test the availablity of the
section hash:
1234567
[% FOREACH key = section.keys %]
- [% key %] => [% section.$key %] -
[% END %]
Hope this helps.
Barry
-------------------------------------------
If I do:
[% section.section %]
I get a null value
but if I do
[% section %]
I get a hash identifier.
Is this hash always available or do I need to initialize it in some way?
Thanks!
Barry

in a template, is there a variable or some other way to know what section is currently active? for instance, in there are template named this: header;misc;default sectionIndex;misc;default sectionIndex;misc;secName header;misc;default includes sectionIndex: [% INCLUDE SectionIndex %] if the current section is secName, then the second sectionIndex template gets used, otherwisee the first one does. I would like to have only one sectionIndex template, and use the template scripting to generate the content dynamically, but I don't know how it can determine the current section context. I envision something like this: [%IF currentSection="a" %] content for section a [%END%] [%IF currentSection="b" %] content for section b [%END%] etc. Any suggestions? I have a lot of theese section index files and I would like to consolidate them if at all possible. Thanks! Barry |

When I attempt to create a new discussion, the page returns with "An unknown error has occurred." This seems to be coming out of newdiscussion;comments;default, if an ID hasn't been returned. The funny thing is that createDiscussion() in /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i686-linux/Slash/DB/MySQL.pm seems to return a discussion_id. Hi! I am using in my work now this scheme, and entry light apache with proxies to serve apache-perl and apache-php in other servers in other ports. But you can also redirect to other kind of services like Zope, Tomcat ... I'm becoming convinced that I probably need a two tiered server as explained in http://perl.apache.org/guide/scenario.html#One_Plain_and_One_mod_perl_enabl Lots of stuff to talk about ... With Slash, would one use Squid or have mod_proxy in the lightweight Apache? The guide doesn't say anything about using Squid for virtual domains (and I use those) so I'm thinking I'll need mod_proxy. However, it looks like mod_proxy only supports up to HTTP 1.0. What will happen to HTTP 1.1 queries? I have some sites using Slash and others using PHP. So I'm thinking the best thing to do would be to have TWO backend Apaches ... one with only mod_perl and one with only PHP. Seems like that would reduce memory usage by quite a bit, since you don't need php AND perl in each server, and static pages could be served by fairly light httpds. OTOH, I do have phpMyAdmin on my Slash sites. I guess with some creative mod_rewrite rules it would be possible to still separate them cleanly, but that would require each backend to have a <VirtualHost> section AND a separate port to listen on. Which brings up a question: doesn't each port that is listened to consume a significant amount of resources? I believe I read that somewhere. Also, the example for virtual hosts given in the guide doesn't give a DocumentRoot directive for the lightweight server. Here's how it has them: Front End: <VirtualHost 10.10.10.10> ServerName www.example.com ServerAlias example.com RewriteEngine On RewriteOptions 'inherit' RewriteRule \.(gif|jpg|png|txt|html)$ - [last] RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://localhost:4077/$1 [proxy] </VirtualHost> Back End: Listen 4077 <VirtualHost localhost:4077> ServerName www.example.com DocumentRoot /home/httpd/docs/www.example.com DirectoryIndex index.shtml index.html </VirtualHost> That's all fairly clear, but I'm just wondering why the front end server doesn't also set the DocumentRoot. Is that an omission or am I missing something? Doesn't it also need to know where to look for the static files? Possibility: Would it be possible to run two versions of Slash by having a separate Apache backend for each one? Perhaps it could even be done fairly easily by setting the Perl library path env variable (I think there is one, forget what it is) in the apachectl for the correct backend Apache and installing the other version of Slash under that dir ... ? And now for which "extra" modules to put where. I need mod_adbanners, mod_gzip, and mod_rewrite. I take it it would be best to install all those ONLY in the "lightweight" front-end Apache. Any disagreements? Any other issues I should know about? This looks do-able, just a bit of a handful. :-) Another advantage is that it would let me upgrade stuff like PHP *WAAAY* more easily than if it was combined with a Slash httpd. Wouldn't have to worry about all the other stuff! Oh, and while I'm at it, can I maybe combine Apache 1.3.x with Apache 2? Obviously Slash, and probably PHP still, requires 1.3.x. But can the lightweight server, and possibly the PHP one when it supports 2.x, use Apache 2 while the Slash server uses 1.3? Or will that screw up mod_proxy? Thanks for any answers or more hints or ideas! Micah -- Like to travel? http://TravTalk.org Micah Yoder Internet Development http://yoderdev.com |

No Dave, It isn't enabled by default....At least for version 2.0 Bender. Under 2.0 it is in the variable "send_mail" which I think is 0 by default, and you can change it to "1" using the admin interface. HOWEVER when users register with the site they don't have the email switched on by default. You can fix this by ammending the SQL of one of the user tables (I forget which but can look it up if you like). I find this useful for running competitions - I ask people to register with the site for "how to enter" info. I give the competition details in the template which goes at the start of the email. I am afraid that I can't say whether this is still true for version 2.1 Fry which has enhanced mailing list support. Alex ===== Alex McLintock al...@OW... I believe someone talked about writing a calendar plugin at one point. Is that still in progress? Is it done/in beta? Is it/will it be Open Source? If there's nothing else I may write one at some point. But I thought I'd check first! Thanks, Micah -- Like to travel? http://TravTalk.org Micah Yoder Internet Development http://yoderdev.com |

Sounds like a great idea but please name them something other than "tasks" since that word's already used for the scripts that slashd invokes. :) Put timestamps in the table too: time assigned, last update. -- Jamie McCarthy ja...@mc... |

Hi Folks, I am beginning to feel the need for a web based "To Do" list with which I can keep track of various people's allocated tasks. Since it is for a slash site it seems sensible to write a plugin for this. I've had a look around and found a "Jobs" plugin written for the Barrapunto site back in July except I can't download the plugin itself or see it in action. Oh dear. I've also had a good look at chromatic's print plugin (which is very good by the way). It is nice and clear, and I think I could have a go at writing a plugin myself. (I've got a reasonable amount of perl cgi experience so I should be able to cope with it if I get enough time.) However what I need from you lot are some ideas as to what you might find useful for your own slash sites. The tasks *I* want to keep track of are that I give out review books to some of my users and I want to keep track of who has yet to actually review them. I'm happy creating one extra table which contains rows with user, taskid, task description, status message, done boolean flag. For the initial stage I will only allow the admin user to add, list, or delete tasks for any user, and anyone else can see their own tasks. Nothing too hard there - Comments folks? Would you find this useful? Alex http://news.DiverseBooks.com ===== Alex McLintock al...@OW... Is the emailing of headlines enabled by default? If not, where's the switch? If so, where do I start looking as to why they're not going out! |
