I want to change the username and password that my slash site uses to access mysql. How can I do this? Thank you for any help! Terry ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ |

I am trying to install slashcode on a RedHat 7.1 box with mysql-3.23.36. I have tried several times to install this module using CPAN and Bundle::Slash. In the installation I have used every combination of databases to test, username/password, and yes/no to MysqlPerl emulation that I can think of. Mysql is running. The mysqlshow command shows the databases I have created. I can connect to and view the tables in the default databases from the mysql prompt. Below is a copy of the errors shown on screen during the install. Any help would be GREATLY apprecited! Do you want to install the MysqlPerl emulation? I plead ignorance: are you referring to a template, a directory (possible /var?), admin.pl, or something else? I cannot find a template that resembles adminmail (or anything of the sort in the admin templates), nor any directory or file that resembles your criteria, nor any reference to the sender in admin.pl. Could you please be more specific? >At 19:04 -0400 2001.10.20, Nathan Thaler wrote: > >[Sat Oct 20 21:33:17 2001] [error] Which was called > >by:Apache::ROOTXXXXXXX::users_2epl:/usr/local/slash/site/hXXXX/htdocs/use > rs.pl:42:Can't > > > >send mail 'Slash Site user password for cfore' to XXXX: mail From: error > >(501 5.5.4 <root@localhost>... I still can't manage to get Slash to email users their passwords. This is the error I get in my vslash_error.log: [Sat Oct 20 21:33:17 2001] [error] Which was called by:Apache::ROOTXXXXXXX::users_2epl:/usr/local/slash/site/hXXXX/htdocs/users.pl:42:Can't send mail 'Slash Site user password for cfore' to XXXX: mail From: error (501 5.5.4 <root@localhost>... Real domain name required for sender address) I'm not sure where the sender address is specified in Slash. It doesn't appear to be the ServerAdmin statement (specified in httpd.conf and vslash.conf), and I can't find anything in SendMail.pm. Any ideas what's causing this problem? Thanks, Nathan Thaler |

D'oh! Mine only looks that way because I changed the dispStory template. In the original, there is a highlighted headline that expands across the whole column, but I took that out and there is no way to actually get a visual clue like that to the column width. I might make the center column a fixed width, a la yahoo news and umpteen other sites to keep the 2nd and third cols close, and also because I can imagine adding a 4th column someday... any thoughts? 2 FAQs but never really answered are around hooking up a ad server and using ssi w/ slash. I have put in a hairy week, but I can now report success w/ both. Give me a couple of days to write it up and I will share. I will wait a bit for any comments, then incorporate them and post them to the slashcode web site. Thanks to Allessio who helped me in private, finally putting me on what turned out to be the right path. Some prelims: The ad server is called DAD, found at www.sklar.com. Its useful features are that it is mysql based, and runs as a mod_perl module. It appears to be unsupported at this point (no response to an email I sent), but it is nowhere near as complex as slash. It installs pretty easily except for these gotchas- - one of the field names in the db has since become a keyword in mysql. Change all instances of "when" to "xwhen" in the schema file and any source code that references that field - there are some drop down boxes in a form where you set the dates for ads to run - you need to update the values because they only go until 2000. Grep for 2000 and put in a new value for the years that suits your needs. Also involved in the story are Apache::OutputChain, Apache::SSIChain, and Apache::Registry. I hope my pending report will save people from either a hair-pulling experience, deciding on a lesser solution, or giving up getting a semi-decent ad-server hooked up to their site. Barry |

When looking at the body of an article (when you click READ MORE), there's a box that appears on the lower right side titled "RELATED LINKS" that, on my site at least, displays the submittor's e-mail, "More on <topic>", and then "also by <person who posted story>". I'd like to re-word that last line, but can't find where to do it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help you can give. |

Making that easier is really outside of the slashcode developers control. perl modules are being updated all the time and so it is difficult to produce an idiot proof installation. The major quirk is that slash sometimes pretends to be a fully blown portal package, but it isn't. It provides the same functionality as slashdot.org and if that is what you want then slashcode is the tool to do it. > - - Good hosting providers that would support slash There is a pretty complete list of hosting providers on the slashcode.com website. It runs through Apache web server so you get whatever you configure Apache to log. What more do you want? Sessions logging? entry and exit points? Why should slash log ip addressses? that is an apache job. Slash logs its own internal behaviour, and it also logs a certain amount of page requests so that it can send a daily email with the activity for that day. Alessio,
I got most of what you suggested implemented with a minimum of fuss and
bother, but I am still running into a gotcha....I can't find an answer to
this in any documentation on the web...what happens when the url the SSI
points to is virtual, and is handled by a Perl Handler itself?
Now I have the following (relavant) directives in my httpd.conf:
<Directory /usr/local/slash/site/slash/htdocs>
Options FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes Indexes
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
AddHandler perl-script .pl
PerlHandler Apache::OutputChain Apache::SSIChain Apache::Registry
</Directory>
# begin set up for the DAD ad server
<Location /dad>
SetHandler perl-script
PerlHandler DAD::public
</Location>
The ssi line I am trying to create in the slash template is something like
this:
<!--#include virtual="dad/ad?group=[%"$this_section$extension"%]" -->
SSI seems to work fine from regular .shtml files, and I can access the ad
server directly via URL so I am confident about most of the set up....
The down side is this: When I load a page, I get
[Tue Oct 16 22:19:18 2001] [error] Can't locate object method
"content_type" via package "DAD::public" at
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/DAD/public.pm line 57.
in my server error log file.
The code referenced in the error message is:
--------------------------
sub handler {
my ($r) = @_;
my $content;
$r->content_type('text/html'); # <----line 57
--------------------------
I tried a number of variations:
1 - <!--#exec cgi="dad/ad?group=[%"$this_section$extension"%]" --> gives
the same error
2- I dropped the ad server into the perl handler chain in all possible
positions to no avail
Any more suggestions?
Thanks a ton!

I am trying to hook up a banner ad system that normally works vi SSI. I
have it set up and installed just fine w/ .shtml files, but I am not having
luck getting it to work in templates.
I tried to modify the templates with various combinations of code that
looks like this (the intent is to make an actually http request to the url
that will serve the ad - the url works directly from the browser)
[%
USE ua=LWP.UserAgent;
USE req=HTTP.Request;
%]
[% FOREACH extension = [ "_1a", "_1b"] %]
<td align=left>
[%
req.method("GET");
req.uri("$base_url$extension"); # this resolves to a valid url
ua.request(req).content;
%]
</td>
[% END %]
I set LOAD_PERL =1 in Template::Config, and added PerlModule LWP::UserAgent
and PerlModule HTTP::Request to the apache directives. I have done the
usual restart http routine, and have disabled slashd for now so that
index.pl doesn't run w/o my wanting it to.
Here is the problem - every third or so time I reload the page, I get this
error in the slash log file:
----------------------
no such context method/member: clone
[Tue Oct 16 03:13:02 2001] [error]

After that, sometimes the page loads ok, sometimes it doesn't.
It looks to me like I could use a destructor call to the 2 objects at the
end of the template, but I tried that and it doesn't work either.
Is there a way to fix this code, or another way to either do a SSI from
inside a template, or access a URL somehow - I don't really care right now
which way I access the ads, just that I do....
Thanks!

Not sure exactly why but I seem to have done and now undone some of these things: - in the sections table, I changed the artcount value to 5 for the "All Section" section from the default of (I think) 30. all other sections have the value of 10 for that column. I changed it back to 30. - I also added a bunch of submissions, enough to total about 69 in the stories and 68 in the newstories tables (why the discrepancy - I don't think I have ever deleted stories from either table?) soon after, the hourly stuff ran. At that point, the block came back. I am not sure if I needed more stories, the artcount was causing a bug/discrepancy somewhere, or what. But there you go. Barry |

- The template that is being used on the main page is index;index;default - user.noboxes = 0 in that template Barry |

OK, poking around, after going through some dead ends, I think I see light at the end of the tunnel - I have a section "articles" which most of the submissions have been assigned to, but the main page is the "index" section referenced through the code. - I have a articles_more block, and if I go to the url [site]/index.pl?section=articles, I see the older stuff block. This makes me think I need to reassign the stories to the index section.... - but as I mentioned before (see below) I had messed with the sections, deleting some default ones that were not needed. I wonder now if I deleted too much, perhaps an "index" section, because there is not one there now. I kinda think I wouldn't have deleted something called "index" (but who knows?) - can someone let me know if the default db has an "index" entry in the sections table? If so, what are the rest of the values? If it is not necessary, then how do I reconcile the difference between articles and the index section? IOW, when the admin assigns a section to a submission, and there is no "index" choice, then "articles" seems like the next best default choice... but those don't show up in the index_more Older_stuff box.
