Yes, this is a bad start. Maybe I try to install all from scratch. It is very quickly. You can use the template-tool tool to insert very easly the templates in the database. It's not hard, but if you can handle the security implications, you can figure out with ease how to enable it. There's really no good reason to need to enable perl anyway, that I can think of. Hi: My apologies first for some newbie's questions. Does anyone know how to enable the EVAL_PERL option for the template or the website in SlashCode V2? Is there any way to pull from other URL other than XML format? Can we use a Portald Blocks to Pull a CGI/Mod_Perl script which display HTML tags? (This will make the migration of the websites into SlashCode much easier...) Any tips/tricks/information will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Simon Wei |

OK... found this in the mailing list archives. Simply add the following directives to your Slash site's virtual host declaration ... mod_gzip_item_exclude reqheader Content-Type:multipart/form-data mod_gzip_item_exclude reqheader Content-Type:application/x-www-form-urlencoded Now, this does NOT compress results from POSTed requests, only GETs. But considering the percentage of requests that are POSTed, this is a whole lot better than nothing!!! Would be nice to get compressed POST output too, but I'll live with this for now! mod_gzip absolutely rules! |

Has anyone used Slash with mod_gzip? Normally my index page is 52K. With it enabled, it is 5.5K. That's quite a bit of a savings when you're paying for bandwidth. Unfortunately, when it is enabled, all POST operations don't work correctly. They basically act like GETs to the script, not passing any of the variables. Turning off mod_gzip, they work normally. This is one I wanna resolve....... Any ideas? Thanks |

Basically it's the Red Hat 7.1 kernel, which is 2.4.2 plus a whole bunch of patches that Red Hat claims "fixes things". Now I'm a bit nervous to run slashd again. :-) I guess I should re-compile the kernel with 2.4.5 + CVS XFS. That could be tricky though, and I'm worried about virtual memory problems in later kernels. |

So I'm not the only one it's hitting. That is really strange. What in the world could slashd be doing to make every process that hits its log directory hang? (No, I haven't yet extensively studied the code...) My test system at home has never done that. But I don't leave it on all night. This started happening sometime last night on my server, after it was up a day and a half. You're not running on XFS are you? |

Right now the above awk piece works for me.

Not sure to be honest. This is happening with me on RedHat 7.1, but not
6.2.

OK, After much fighting, and manual reading, I got slash to install. But when I hit the site, all I get is a blank page. Nothing else. Can anyone clue me into where I should start in trying to fix this? Thanks. --Eric |

uhh... first of all what are you grepping?
Second, I *did* kill -9 the slashd process, several times. And it's still
running!
And why is every process that accesses the log directory turning into a D?

OK, this is Screwed-Up(tm). Finally got my co-located box for Slash (and other things). Now, the slashd process is pretty much running out of control. It's in the R state, taking 99% of a CPU (there are two). Now, whenever I try to access anything in the Slash site's log directory (containing slashd.log), the process (ls, mc, less, etc.) hangs and is in a D state. Whenever I try to strace any of those processes, the same fate happens to the strace process. I can't kill -9 any of them!!! I know you can't kill a D process but why not the R slashd? In fact, running reboot, the same thing happened to the shutdown process! Aaargh! It's on an XFS filesystem. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Any ideas for how to get out of this mess? The box is a 6-hour drive away and they charge $25 for power cycling, so I'd only want to use that as a last resort. Thanks, Micah |

----- Begin Hush Signed Message from tra...@hu... -----
As everyone probably knows, Slash 2.0.0 just has "Bite my shiny metal ass!
-- Bender" hardcoded for the MOTD template. After seeing this and reading
the comments in that particular template, I'm assuming that for whatever
reason, the Fortune/MOTD function is not operational upon the initial install.
Question is, what is the proper way to get this function working?
I've messed around with setting it up as a Block as the comments hint at,
but can't figure out how to get that displayed in the index page when not
logged in as an Admin.
So, I tried setting it up as a variable (motd) and had Slashd update that
field in the 'vars' table with the following code:
sub newmotd {
return unless -x '/usr/games/fortune';
chomp(my $t = `/usr/games/fortune -s`);
$slashdb->setVar('motd', $t);
}
I've edited the footer templates to:
[% constants.motd %]
instead of
[% INCLUDE motd %]
since it should be getting the text from the var motd instead of the template.
The field in the 'vars' table gets updated just fine when Slashd runs the
code, but the index page doesn't get updated unless I stop and restart Slash
AND Apache.
Another question I suppose is is this a good way of doing it? Or is there
a better way?
Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.
Thanks.

I am in the process of installing slash 2.0 for the first time. My current problem is this: It seems that the slash script that starts slasd never got installed anywhere. The only place is in /slash-2.0.0/utils/slash and when I try to run that file I get this error: # /slash-2.0.0/utils/slash start Starting slashd slashvu: ok PID = 38360 # su: no directory # and that's it. So I guess my question is how do I configure that file so that it will start slashd correctly? Thanks in advance! |
