I am late on this, but wanted to reiterate something about perl versions. I see a BIG HUGE NASTY problem with requiring 5.6. Namely, that there is no significant advantage in the code for it, and it will cause huge problems for people who for one reason or another cannot upgrade perl. Upgrading perl can be a pain in the arse if you are not familiar with perl. It's not like mysql or Apache where you just recompile and install and everything is OK. perl is bigger and more complex and harder to upgrade. Recommending perl 5.6.1 is good. Requiring it is bad. -- Chris Nandor pu...@po... http://pudge.net/ Open Source Development Network pu...@os... http://osdn.com/ |

Just wondering, partly because I'm thinking of building a completely different kind of application using as much of the Slash code as possible ... something warped beyond recognition. And I might as well wait for the new version if it will happen anytime soon. I'm not sure if I'll wait until September, but it might be worth it... > > > what it does. But getting it on slashdot and releasing are two different things. A release will have some upgrade scripts to go from 2.0-2.2, and will have a few other fixes in it. Well, first, make sure slashd is running. That would also have
the symptoms you describe.
I'm not aware of a bug involving clicking Save without Preview.
I believe the bug is actually that viewing a story with article.pl
or comments.pl, before slashd gets a chance to write it into the
newstories table (see slashd's freshenup() subroutine), will clear
its writestatus field.
In Slash.pm's selectComments() I see it calling
setStory({writestatus => 0}). That code really needs to be
surrounded by an if() to make sure it doesn't happen every single
dang time someone views a story's comments...I'm not exactly sure
of the extent of this bug but I think it's what's keeping your
story from displaying.
The workaround is, in admin.pl after you Save a story, wait five
minutes before you view it with article.pl by clicking on its
subject in the story listing. Clicking on its number to edit it
with admin.pl is still OK.
The fix for already-broken stories is to update them, and then,
again, not to look at them with article.pl for five minutes.
Or, if that doesn't work, go into mysql and
UPDATE stories SET writestatus=1 WHERE sid='your/story/sid';
and within the next five minutes slashd should fix it.
This is fixed in fry (and I'm today in the process of fixing it even
better than it was already fixed :).

I'd like to know where it is. Its not alpha yet, so not much word about it. We have no date for giving out a tarball yet. Outside of just a handful of folks who I know of (mainly the slash team, along with one or two others) I know of no one running it. And it certainly is not ready for production quite yet. It has Slash::Messages, more XML, new features in journals, faster comments, new features for submitters. Not sure if anyone has a full list of all of what it does. The biggest issue in upgrading will be moving your comments from the old comment tables to the new ones. -Brian |

Fortunately a killall slashd fixed it up pretty quick. It actually was kind of our fault here -- we were using the wrong values for some of the variables in vars table! My travtalk slashd was running for well over 2 weeks and I had no zombies with it. That also was the cause of the e-mail problem I posted a couple days ago. Basically, a few more things were different than I thought. > /etc/init.d/slash restart hmm, I start it from /etc/rc.local. Perhaps some searhcing the archives will help. I think the upshot of this is that you don't have to worry about it - so long as they don't fill up your process table - hopefully they aren't taking up more resources. Hi folks, I've spotted an unusual bug which you may be interested in - or you may be able to see where I am going wrong. With my Slash 2.0.0 site I can create new articles using the admin interface as my admin user. I can hit the "save" button without hitting "preview" first. This seems to work - the article appears in the list afterwards but doesn't appear on the home page - ever! OK, this is weird. I just installed a second Slash site on my box. AFAIK it has the EXACT same configuration as the other one, which works fine. But the second one simply won't send any mail. This is in the error_log: ---------- Error sending to <mi...@yo...> (550-5.7.1 reject sending to address '<mi...@yo...>'.) [Tue Jul 3 09:53:38 2001] [error] /users.pl:Apache::ROOTjesusgeeks_2enet::users_2epl:/usr/local/slash/site/jesusgeeks.net/htdocs/users.pl:243:Can't send mail 'JesusGeeks user password for yoderdev' to mi...@yo...: Error sending to <mi...@yo...> (550-5.7.1 reject sending to address '<mi...@yo...>'.) Apparently, a period is replaced with "_2e". I diff'd users.pl on both sites, they're the same. A look at /var/log/maillog is showing that NOTHING is getting there -- there are no messages related to this transaction. So aparently postfix (sendmail replacement) isn't even running. When I set up my first site, I also had problems sending mail, but it turned out to be a Postfix config error and failure messages DID show up in /var/log/maillog. Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks -- Like to travel? http://TravTalk.org Micah Yoder Internet Development http://yoderdev.com |

I installed Slashcode and the install seemed to go well, but I am getting= some odd behavior from it that I can't quite explain and was wondering if anyo= ne here on the list has had this problem or could explain why it's not worki= ng quite as well as I hoped. http://www.battledroid.org is the site that I am using to play with Slash= and it currently has trouble: 1) loading images 2) it seems to like rendering everything twice (I get a second copy of th= e Slashpage.) The way the servers are configured at the moment is there are two apache servers, one on 80 and one on 8080. 8080 is configured for mod_perl and = I have 80 do a mod_rewrite to the 8080 machine. Versions: Slash 2.0.0 Perl 5.6.0 Apache 1.3.12 Mod_perl Apache 1.3.20 It's almost like it's reading a datasource twice ... very strange. Perhaps this is a case of just lather (install), rinse, repeat. :) Any thoughts? Jason |

Hi - I just installed the slashcode today, 2.0.0 I am using postgresql. I've tested my shiny new apache 1.3.20 mod_perl mod_ssl by writing a little mod perl script that does a db query through Pg and then dumps the symbol table. That works. However, when I try to go to my slash site (it is in a virtual context) the little httpd dies: [Mon Jul 2 00:46:38 2001] [notice] child pid 5418 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) Very sad. I know if I set the 404 to not be a perl script, it "fails" correctly, and I put print STDERR in a BEGIN block at the top of 404.pl to see if I could print anything before it loaded its own modules. That would be no. What details are helpful, and does anyone have any suggestions? thanks, ben -- "Mir's outstanding success is that it has survived." Hello I am trying tioupgrade to 2.0,
while running the make install in the slash directory it seems I have
the following problem:
chown nobody:nobody /usr/local/slash
chown: `nobody:nobody': invalid group
I am using Debian and my apache user is www-data,
I think it would be nice to check somehow what group and user is used
to run apache.
Anybody found a nice solution rather than just doing it by hand?
Thanks in advance

I had to copy the init.d directory over to my /etc directory and edit the slashd script to get it working with OpenBSD 2.8. I also needed to change the var associated with the admin email to get the password mails to work. I could send you the changes I made to the script if you'd like... I finally got slash 2.0 installed and running (mostly) on my OpenBSD 2.9 system, but there's one problem (that I've found so far). Passwords don't get mailed out. It still sends admin mail (at least it did the first time I managed to get slashd to run), but no passwords. It happens both with new users and when you use the "mailpasswd" button on the login page. Here is the message after the "mailpasswd" button is pressed: retrying in 1 seconds... Passwd for aragorn_test was just emailed. There is nothing that I can find in any logs (either slash or sendmail) about it, so it doesn't look like it's even getting as far as local sendmail. Also, the slash script to start slashd doesn't work. su seems to barf with something about /nonexistent. It also didn't get installed anywhere (probably because this is a BSD system and doesn't have a /etc/init.d directory. I just started slashd with: ./slashd <virtual user> & It seems to work okay (except for that email thing). Finally, is there any good way to delete users? Preferably without just going straight into the database by hand. Also, is there an easy way to edit the contents of the database if you don't know SQL (besides the obvious learning SQL)? Thanks in advance, Cory. PS I hope I'm not asking any dumb questions...I really did look through as many docs as I could find. I looked at the code a bit too, but I don't know perl very well, so I didn't really figure much out. |
