Ugh... my bad - sorry for the resend, but the first one had a totally incorrect subject line so some of you might have missed it.... Barry ------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for the help last week on the per-section templates. Now, as I work my way through the site design/templates/functionality onion, I wonder if anyone has advice on this stumbling block? 1 - Where in the templates are the right side blocks inserted? I see what looks like a default set in display;misc;default, but I don't see how that reacts to the user setting their own selection of blocks 2 - Is there a way to associate different blocks with different templates? Maybe the answer to the previous question will make the answer to this one obvious. I don't want all my blocks to have the same format, so even if I modify the fancybox template, I will still have only one. will the scheme work for new blocks I create? 3 - has anyone tried using blocks as containers for ads? Thoughts or suggestions on that experience to share? Thanks in advance, Barry |

Looking at the past postings and review of listed "known" slash sites, it looks like the most mentioned (re: lower end) advertising management software packages are mod_adbanners, webadverts, and adcycle. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to these packages for hosting advertising on a slash site ? Or are there other packages that are more suitable ? Brock |

I seem to be having problems getting a printout from my slash site. If I use the browser (either Netscape 4.x or IE 5.x on WinNT) to print the screen then I get an unreadable selection of slashboxes and once I even had the main story missed out. So is anyone else getting these problems? My templates are pretty much the Bender Slash 2.0 vanilla versions - but simplified in some ways - I've removed the curved corners for example. As an alternative - is there an easy way to create a self referencing link in the display article template to say "Click Here for a Printable version". The result of clicking on it could be the same page but displayed as if the user had selected "Light" and maybe "Deactivate Slashboxes". On a related note : I'd like to be able to have a facility to "Mail this article to a friend". IMHO this is useful to build up a community and get publicity by "word of mouth". Is it possible with Slash2.0 as it is? Is it coming in Fry? Should I write it and submit a patch? Alex McLintock ===== Alex McLintock al...@OW... Yeah it's way broken. It fails for like four different reasons;
several bugs in the algorithm and even if it could set the data it
would store it in the wrong place. Fortunately one of the bugs
keeps any of that code from ever getting run :)
If you're interested in making it work, check out a copy of fry
(the 2.2 release) and look at set_recent_topics.pl. Here's the
code; this will NOT port directly to 2.0 but it may help get
you started:
# For slashd
# "LIMIT 10" chosen arbitrarily, actually could be LIMIT 5 but doesn't
# hurt much to kick in some more in case the caller has been changed to
# want more.
sub getNewStoryTopic {
my($self) = @_;
my $story_table = getCurrentStatic('mysql_heap_table') ? 'story_heap' : 'stories';
my $sth = $self->sqlSelectMany(
"alttext, image, width, height, $story_table.tid",
"$story_table, topics",
"$story_table.tid=topics.tid AND displaystatus = 0
AND NOT FIND_IN_SET('delete_me', flags) AND time < NOW()",
"ORDER BY time DESC LIMIT 10"
);
return $sth;
}
sub {
my($virtual_user, $constants, $slashdb, $user) = @_;
my $sth = $slashdb->getNewStoryTopic();
my($cur_tid, $last_tid) = ('', '_not_a_topic_');
my $num_stories = 0;
my $html = '';
while (my $cur_story = $sth->fetchrow_hashref) {
my $cur_tid = $cur_story->{tid};
next if $cur_tid eq $last_tid; # don't show two in a row
$html .= <<EOT;
<TD><A HREF="$constants->{rootdir}/search.pl?topic=$cur_tid"><IMG
SRC="$constants->{imagedir}/topics/$cur_story->{image}"
WIDTH="$cur_story->{width}" HEIGHT="$cur_story->{height}"
BORDER="0" ALT="$cur_story->{alttext}"></A>
</TD>
EOT
last if ++$num_stories >= 5;
$last_tid = $cur_tid;
}
$sth->finish();
my $tpid = $slashdb->getTemplateByName("recentTopics", "tpid");
$slashdb->setTemplate($tpid, { template => $html });
};

Anyone have a hack for setheadertopics? I created the block "topic", yet
still doesnt populate. I can't seem to figure out why it's not working.
The sub does run, but the perl is a bit mistifying, especially:
local $_ = $t;
if (! /$_->{'tid'}/) {
whats going on here? Where is $t set anyway?

Aster upgrading from Slash 1.0 to 2.0, I found slashcode-dearchive in the utils directory. I can't find any documentation other than the usage instructions. The purpose is self explanitory, but should I run it? My slash site has been up for about 2 years, and my articles extend back quite far. Is this something I need to use? --Brent |

Subject: [Slashcode-general] remove comments posting limits and etc. Hi there, I am setting up a slash website on a multiprocessor server to study the behavior of the dynamic website workload. I have finished the installation and written a "autoslash" client to drive the server. However, I found there is a comment posting limit for each user every 4 hours for 30 comments. Since, the client I have written is running on the same machine as the server, hence, it only binds to a singal IP and only uses anonymous user to post. I wonder if I could remove this limit, and more importantly, other limits like this to allow me to drive the slash website as fast as possible. Could anybody provide these user submission limiting information and the way to disable them? Thanks in deed in advance! Thanks for all your help! I was just able to create a new section template by checking the "make new section" checkbox on the Admin/Template page. Nice! BTW, I had tried the Template-tool command earlier w/ no success. I looked at the man page, but quickly gave up trying to figure out what options to use from the multitude for a few simple tasks: 1) Dump all the templates out from the db to text files 2) import a single template from a text file into the db Can anybody provide the actual commands for those? After that I think I can figure out all the variations I might need from the man page. Thanks! Barry |

For the record I'm not offended by being called a silly newbie - I know it is a joke. I am actually on my second Slashcode installation having previously installed version 0.9x on a site which died. <plug>Did I mention that my website gives news and views on Science Fiction and Computing books? http://news.DiverseBooks.com</plug> --- Alvaro del Castillo <ac...@ba...> wrote: > I think it is not correct to answer in this way to a newbie. I agree with the sentiment behind Alvaro's comment. I am a serious web developer and am willing to help out. There seems to be a lot of things that you can't learn from the existing documentation. I can start to help by maintaining a web based FAQ for slashcode. I already do one for FOP (a Java based XML to PDF project under the Apache Software Foundation) and doing another one wont be too much work - economies of scale mean that it isn't twice as much effort maintaining two FAQs as one. You can see the software I use here: http://www.OWAL.co.uk:8090/asf/fop.jsp Please try it out. I can set up a Slashcode FAQ very easily... Oh wait a minute: I did one already... http://www.OWAL.co.uk:8090/asf/servlet/asf/screen/DisplayTopics/action/SetAll/project_id/19/faq_id/281 Ideally you should be able to add information directly into the FAQ but that facility is broken - please email me any questions and answers you think might be useful and I will stick them into this FAQ. I hope that the FAQ can be used as a store of information for further "more formal" documentation later on - but I don't promise to write that :-) The software as it stands has many faults but it is already a LOT easier to use than just keeping a plain text or xml version of the FAQ.
