Newbie question: I got slash installed, finally, but when I append the contents of slash.conf onto the end of httpd.conf and restart, the httpd daemon doesn't understand what SlashVirtualUser is (from the line SlashVirtualUser <virtual_usr>), and therefore fails to start up apache. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Nathan Thaler |

HI, Could you reference a section by its own url? ie: main page = www.foo.com, section = section.foo.com ? Thanx Ralf |

I think this has been asked before (a while ago at least)... Is there a way to create sub sections? each with its own topics just for that section? Thanx Ralf |

ok, do it without the -a. Then, do it with a -p to verify that that lib path is now incorporated into the system's lib path list. OK Well every DBD::mysql test failed. I get many different incarnations
of this error:

t/10dsnlist.........dubious
Test returned status 255 (wstat 65280, 0xff00)
DIED. FAILED tests 1-3
Failed 3/3 tests, 0.00% okay
It says that a shared library isn't installed where expected. Where does
it expect it to be? I symlinked /opt/mysql to /usr/local/mysql, but that
doesn't seem to help. I added /opt/mysql/lib/mysql to /etc/ld.so.conf and
ran ldconfig, but that didn't seem to have any effect.
Argh,
Don.

It sounds to me that you have DBD::Mysql library path issues. Template is merely using DBD, and if you get those errors, it can't even properly use DBD::Mysql. Have you ran that tests that come with DBD::Mysql? That could reveal more about your problems. You might look at recompileing DBD::Mysql and making sure all the tests work properly. You could also make sure that ld.so.conf has all the lib paths (namely the ones you're using that aren't standard) and running ldconfig load those lib paths on your system (this is Linux only too). hullo. I'm trying to install slash (obviously). I installed mysql into /opt/mysql from the tarball on mysql.org. So I had to more or less manually install DBD::mysql to give it the locations of the files etc. Installing template from cpan fails because the DBI fails when it tries to connect to the mysql test database. I'm able to connect with the user that I give to Template, but the cpan test fails every time. Obviously I can install it when I don't run the test, but I get this error when I run install-slashsite: /usr/bin/perl: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/i386-linux/auto/DBD/mysql/mysql.so: undefined symbol: mysql_init I don't know if this is related to the Template problem or what. I did install slash into /usr/local like suggested. Should I have installed mysql via rpm or into a different location. I notice that the files wanted are in /opt/mysql/include/mysql and /opt/mysql/lib/mysql, instead of just /opt/mysql/include and /opt/mysql/lib which it seems some things are expecting. Here is an abridged biography of my box: RedHat 7.1 MySQL 3.23.40 Apache 1.3.20 mod_perl 1.26 slash 2.0.0 The apache and mod_perl seem to be working fine, and were installed as specified in the slash instructions. I've been in the irc chat room, it doesn't seem like anyone is up for a nice slash chat on Saturday night or Sunday morning. :p Anyway, I'm hoping someone will have some hints and/or suggestions for my little dilemma. I am guessing for now (correct me if am wrong) that the freshmeat_more would have content filled automatically via portald. I set the number of stories to display on the Support section to 1, since I am just configuring this site and there is not much content. I submitted 3-4 stories to the Support section successfully. The goal is to get the 2 boxes to appear on the right, but none of this seems to have made any difference. I can't find any additional documentation in the FAQ at all. Ah! I forgot about that!!
If you set your block_expire down low (300), and your apache settings low,
the apache threads will die off quick enough that template changes/new
templates will show up w/o having to restart apache - just don't try this
with a production box :)

Actually, according to the documentation , if the script running is call foo.pl the slashDisplay will first look for the page foo, then if not found, it looks in misc. I had to restart Apache in order for it to find the right template.
Its working correctly now.

This isn't really about the slashcode software but more about how I might do something on my main slash site. Many of my users do things for our online community which aren't directly done on the slash site eg - a bit of publicity, or emailing me a review, or giving us books, or giving us an interview, and so on. Since I don't pay for reviews I have in my head a kind of points system instead. Eg person W gives me lots of reviews and therefore "wins" first pick of review books as they come in. Now this worked fine whilst there was just a few people in the community but I am happy to say that I have loads of people saying they are doing tasks needed by the site. Maybe I'll add in some capability to vote on articles in which case a favourable vote might also give the author some points. I am wondering whether people have experience of some kind of points system which they might have used in conjunction with a slash site (or similar). I remember hearing about the advogadro system for rating open source authors - but I can't seem to find it now even with google searches. I'm not afraid of writing perl cgi scripts but am a bit confused as to what is involved in writing a slash plugin. I could perhaps create a new table for these points and an admin interface so that I can "award points". (PS I can't pretend I have much spare time though :-( Any pointers folks? I apologize for the ambiguity. The 3rd option: ----- Original Message ----- You *might* have meant that you wanted each professor to have a particular section where articles relevant to them could be stored. Or possibly topic instead of section. To see how this might work you can visit my www.DiverseBooks.com site - just where you see a book genre think "Professor" and where you see a section think "type of article about or by that professor". So your plugins are like this:
name page section
-----------------------------------------------
data getprefs default
main getprefs default
create getprefs default

Well, when you do that, aren't you calling the template
name page section
-----------------------------------------------
create misc default
and *that* template doesn't exist.
>The output in my html source is :
>
><!-- start template: ID , create;; -->
>
>
>
><!-- end template: ID , create;; -->
>
notice that the output shows it's not finding the template.
For one of my plugins, when it calls a template, it shows the output as
<!-- start template: ID 126, bjplyrbankrupt;misc;default -->
the template is named: bjplyrbankrupt;misc;default
From my experiences, the *easiest* way to deal with templates is the
template-tool.
to load the template into the system:
template-tool -u bj -s bjplyrbankrupt;misc;default
to dump the template to a file to edit it:
template-tool -u bj -d -i 126
I recommend you use that to work with your templates.
