#1185 Hangs on corrupt pdf (version 1.4.29 (103))
Short version: skim hangs on corrupt pdf file.
Longer version: I work with a tool that outputs pdf. However, sometimes I've made errors in the code, which results in corrupt pdf. A proper pdf is produced as soon as I've fixed the code. My impression is, that these intermittant corrupt pdf-files did not use to cause Skim to crash or hang. But at least version 1.4.29 (103) does.
Obviously Skim can't be asked to actually show a faulty pdf, but it would be great if it didn't cause it to hang. Instead merely wait, and show the cached / currently showing version. In other words: (1) ok pdf is shown => (2) pdf is corrupted => (3) Skim does nothing. Instead of => (3) Skim tries to show corrupt pdf and fails.
Attaching both crash log (that is, log of me killing the process that got hung) and a corrupt pdf. (It hangs Skim if you start it by opening the corrupt pdf, too.)
Preview opens the pdf, but once you start scrolling it hangs, too. (So sounds like non-Skim specific bug? If it can be called a bug? Less than ideal behaviour, at least. ;-) )
I cannot even open it with Preview, and also QuickLook fails on it. So this is clearly a problem with either the PDF or PDFKit.
There is nothing we can do about either of these.
The log shows that it hangs when interpreting the core PDF content. That's all Apple's code and responsibility. Looks like another (closed) bug I already reported to Apple. You may also report this to Apple, they consider how many times something is reported.
The problem is, without doubt, the PDF. It is a corrupt PDF. My point was that it would be great if Skim could fail a bit more gracefully. (Instead of hanging.)
Indeed, it used to. It hanging on corrupt PDF:s is new behaviour. Not sure when it was introduced, but confident it did not used to work like this.
If it used to not hang, than that must be because oif the OS, as it hangs in Apple code. And we cannot fix Apple's bugas, this one can;'t even be worked around. So only Applke can fix this.
