Thanks for support the ISO format!

But what's with *.hqx and *.sit???
    Possible or not?

      - But what's with *.hqx and *.sit???

      I don't plan it.

    Large Zip file support (Zip-64)

    see: http://www.winzip.com/wzdic.htm

what is the next file support? :)

  • Nobody/Anonymous

Can we start a new thread for these things? Becomes painful to read this huge thread by now...

  • Nobody/Anonymous

    > "Can we start a new thread for these things? ... "<

    Why???

To support more and more formats can be only very useful.
And here you can read the wishes of the users of the program.

I think to support the ISO format is a great step.
But the next steps must be the support (read/unpack) of BIN, IMG, NRG, ... !

    Thanks Igor !!!

  • Nobody/Anonymous

I think that the support of ISO format is great!
the only other format I miss is ACE, but as it can't be added due to its license I'm sorry for that but I'm satisfied to the 7-zip policy

thanks for 7-zip format! it really is a great format and I think it could be the next standard in file compression software! keep it working!

I also think that is priority to make more stable and better the 7-zip format (adding recovery record for example) than adding more format support to the 7-zip external engine

    (sorry for my english)

Can we have a way to vote for which new features are important?  I know bugzilla has this feature, sourceforge appears to not, but if we did have it we could stop arguing about which features are a waste of time and just implement new features roughly according to which have the most votes - this being a fairly good indicator of how much a requested feature would actually be used.

  • Nobody/Anonymous

    > "Can we ... vote for ... new features (formats) ... ?" <

    It's a very good idea!!!

    "

YES. Just invent a method how to do this making sure
that only ONE vote per person can be counted.

Everybody who votes must donate first 5 dollars to Igor Pavlov :D

    see "PowerArchiver 2006":
    http://www.powerarchiver.com/
    http://www.powerarchiver.com/features/?lang=en

    - Read and write support for ZIP, 7-ZIP, CAB, LHA (LZH), TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, BH, XXE, UUE, yENC, and MIME (Base 64)
    - Read and extract support for: RAR, ARJ, ARC, ACE, ZOO plus ISO, BIN, IMG and NRG disc image formats

    ..................................................

Igor, is it possible to add write support for more formats in 7-Zip?
    Like CAB, LHA or other?

[Useability and universality is the slogan.]

  • Nobody/Anonymous

I think that 7-Zip already supports the most needed formats. I actually never came along a BH (Black Hole) archive.
The most common archives on the internet are ZIP, RAR, 7Z, GZ, BZ2 and sometimes ACE. So maybe read-only support for ACE archives could be useful.

  • Nobody/Anonymous

    The question is:
Is it possible to add more formats?
If YES, then just do it!

It is not sufficient to be good! You must be the best!

[Useability and universality is the slogan.]

  • Nobody/Anonymous

Igor, what is your plan for next supported formats?

    • Igor Pavlov

      NSIS installers.

  • Guillermo Gabrielli

    >NSIS installers

    Great!!!

BTW the NSIS LZMA/BCJ patch has a bug: The installer crashes if the compressor is ZLIB.

    Squeez 5.2
    http://www.speedproject.de/enu/squeez/index.html

"Squeez compresses and decompresses SQX, ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, CAB, GZIP, TAR, UUE, ACE, JAR, BZIP and 7Z - and all of this without further software!"

Why is Squeez able to compress RAR and ACE format???!
Everyone knows, WinRAR and WinACE are shareware programs! You must pay money tor these tools!
    Why is it possible?
And why the 7z format? (Is it free for using to compress?)

Take a look at this open Source extractor.

"The original motivation behind this project was that I wanted an easy, convenient way to extract files from installation packages, such as Inno Setup or Windows Installer packages"

    http://www.legroom.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Open_Source&file=index&page=software&app=uniextract

My opinion about "support more formats"
On one hand it's not so important to support so much formats but it might help to spread 7zip. At the moment it's not a good idea to send 7zip-archives per mail in business or to not so computer-skilled friends.
Maybe 7zip would be used by more people if it supports more formats. And on this way the 7zip-format would also be spread.

Hi, I'm the author of the Universal Extractor program mentioned in the last two posts.  I just wanted to make it clear that I use 7-zip myself to extract many of the formats supported by Universal Extractor.  Specifically, this includes 7z, 7-Zip SFX .exe, .bz2, .cab, .chm, .cpio, .deb, .gz, .img, .iso, .lha, .lzh, .rpm, .tar, and .Z files.

Without 7-zip, my own program would be severely limited in scope.  So Igor, thank you very much for all your hard work on this project.  I want you to know that I do try to give your program all the credit it deserves.

Why do you not write Plugins for 7zip?

I'm assuming you're addressing this question to me?  If so, the answer's pretty simple - I can't.  I'm not a low-level developer.  I haven't done any coding in compiled languages since college, I don't own any commercial Windows developer tools, and I wouldn't know what to do with them even if I did.

Universal Extractor is simply a front-end to a myriad of "helper" programs that does most of the extracting for it.  While can't improve the back-end programs (though not for lack of desire), I do try to make it easier for people to use them by packaging them together with a unified front-end.

I hope this answers your question.

Improving 7z format should have higher priority than adding more formats.
Btw. in my oppinion 7-Zip already supports a lot of formats!

    Changelog of 7-zip 4.40 beta:
    - 7-Zip now can unpack some installers created by NSIS
    - New localization: Kurdish
    - Some bugs were fixed

According to my tests with the 7-zip scripts, "some" means:
BCJ+LZMA (SetCompressor lzma SetCompressorFilter 1 with the LZMA - BCJ Filter Patch),
    LZMA and
    Zlib
but 7-zip cannot extract NSIS installers created with Bzip2 compression.
