Today I've been explored several ones to balance visitors load.

I've added some other packages - one of this pool seems to correct the 
problem:
protobuf
tokyocabinet
tokyotyrant

I guess the protobuf is the one needed when activating the httpserv 
plugin.

Maybe the configure script should check that and return an error when 
it's missing ?

For now, make && make install works just fine with those new packages 
installed.

It seems that something's missing for httpserv :(. I also tried the 
latest git version (NOT experimental), and it fails with the same error.

Removing the --enable-httpserv-plugin option to "configure" makes it 
work.

[Seeks-users] Seeks gets an innovation award at Open World Forum

Hi all,

as some of you may already know, Seeks won an award last thursday at
the Open World Forum Demo Cup. The results are yet to be announced,
though the description of this friendly competition is here:

The finalists were six companies, presenting six open source
projects. Seeks came out second among the six, and snatched an award. 

This is good news for Seeks. With no doubt, this is the result of two
years of development, and two years of support by free software
developpers and enthusiasts.

I was very proud to defend the project in the
competition. Interestingly, it is a positive feedback from the open
source business community.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the project and making it what it is
today! We hope for an even brighter future, so stay around!

Now, ability to move specific results up/down is not implemented
mainly because I am not convinced that it does make sense. Let me
explain. Wikipedia articles are built to slowly 'converge' onto a kind
of argumented truth (if that ever truely exists). Search instead is
less about the facts, and more about the user context, at least
IMO. As such, there isn't really an 'Oracle' for search, as there is
for the kind of truth Wikipedia is after. This means that a user could
spend a decent time actively ranking results, in a way that would not be
approved by others. In this case, there would still be the need for a
semi-passive re-ranking algorithm based on each user active ranking.

Btw, google did try this up/down active ranking, and latter backed down, 
http://searchengineland.com/google-likedont-like-move-results-up-hide-them-or-suggest-your-own-12797

Additionnally, somme studies indicate that users tend to read groups
of results at once, e.g. the first five. And that ranking among those
groups does not impact their satisfaction and/or searches.

This is to justify why it is not *yet* implemented. The project is
totally open to such changes though.

Finally, per-user storage can only be achieved by running a Seeks node for
each user, as for now. This could change in the future, and proposals
on how to move in that direction are welcome.

True. Though I'm concerned with the amount of data users may be
facing. Which is a reflection of the number of users actively
involved. Attracting users nowadays is difficult. This requires
state-of-the-art and well calibrated UIs. Both are out of the scope of

I do believe that!

So, I would love to have other users taking the time to give their
opinion here, before any move to that direction.

Though a first step would be to take advantage of new forthcoming API
http://seeks-project.info/wiki/index.php/API-0.4.0
and see what kind of API calls would be needed for even basic AURSR.

As for now, the API embeds a POST call, 
http://seeks-project.info/wiki/index.php/API-0.4.0#recommend_a_result_to_the_P2P_collaborative_filter_for_a_given_query
that allows to recommend a new result for a given query. This result
does not need to come from an external source such as a search engine.
Here, the poster is the source.
Result ranking (up/down) could probably be achieved by attaching more
parameters to this call. Deletion is on its way.
Note that this would not affect results obtained from external search
engines and feeds, but only those obtained form the P2P ring.

Finally, behind AURSR lies the emergence of a meritocracy, much like
that of Wikipedia. This would require a new thread of
discussion. Briefly, I'm convinced that there is a need for a social
layer on top of Seeks itself. Such a layer would be a great step
forward. Though I believe the amount of work required is above our
current workforce.

I've been a CS researcher for about ten years, before leaving the
protective shell of various labs, and dedicating more time to free
software, Seeks, machine learning and other tricks. I did start Seeks
a couple of years ago, volunteering two weeks a month to the
project. More recently, having consumed my initial resources, I've
started, with others, a small company centered on servicing Seeks and
related technologies to businesses and public institutions.

and I can still feel the pain and the terrible smell of muddy books

thanks for the details on VirtualBox. Seeks is designed to run on even
tiny devices with low CPU and memory, so at first glance, the full
Ubuntu server installation looks like it's killing the 'lightweight'
initial purpose. But that is clearly the only working solution we have
right now on Windows! So you're breaking into new ground here anyways ;)

Right. A full windows port requires some low level work. FYI, Seeks
proxy was initially gathered and ported (to a mix of C / C++) from
Privoxy. Privoxy is known to work on Windows and to compile with
cygwin. So in the end, the knowledge is around. Just mentioning it in
case you'd like to dig in further.

OK. Let's wait for confirmation from someone with more knowledge that
I have about this, but I believe that using 0.0.0.0 as the listening
address will automatically bind to the VM's IP address.

The option does not appear on fresh queries, but should appear on any
past query (or similar).

Also, make sure you did compile Seeks with all libraries that are required
for personalization of results, ie. protocol buffers & tokyo cabinet.
Double-check that you have everything installed:

And read what the configure script says at the end (whether or not it
did find those libraries).

Wow, this is great news! I'm not familiar at all with virtualization
(and VirtualBox). I have a few questions:

- What are the steps for installation ? Would you be interested in
  writing a piece on the blog or on the wiki, that we can share around ?

- Could you share instructions for building up the package ? (I'd
  suggest the wiki for this, in the Developpers' section).

Since the package seems to be requiring some addtional work, I suggest
you make a ticket on the redmine (http://redmine.seeks-project.info/)
so that we can all keep track of the changes and help you as much as
we can.

The way it works until 0.3.5 included is as follows:
- your clicks make the clicked results go up.
- your rejection of results (little red cross) forces them down.
- rejection builds a filter that is local to the node you're using:
  the other nodes are not affected. (To summarize it, recommendation
  is 'global' while rejection is 'local').
- you can ban result forever to appear,

(use the 'reject' pattern file).

The new API will offer a finer control. Though while we could grant a
full control, i.e. let users rank the results up & down 'by hand',
experience suggests that this is too much of a daunting task to
generalize to the daily use of a search engine.
More thoughts on these issues are particularly welcome!

I've just been interested in CouchDB these days, but yes, I've read that
many benchmarks shows that CouchDB can be slow (however many comments
claiming that it doesn't reflect real use cases, in real situation
CouchDB doesn't seem to suffer on this, e.g.*), but in most cases Seeks
nodes work on personal single machines that are not used at 100% of
their capacity. Anyway, that's not what I was pointing, CouchDB might
indeed be a bit slower than other DB, I was talking about CouchDB assets
on higher level: application. Indeed, CouchDB is very fast for something
else: software development, which is also an important aspect to be
considered (IMHO).

As CouchDB does a lot of things that Seeks does (and plans to do) and is
very friendly for developing, distributing, hosting, and running
applications upon it, I find that an interesting way for implementing
Seeks could have been a to make it a CouchDB app. Basically, bringing
Seeks' specific technological layer (DHT, LSH, etc.) to CouchDB would
transform any CouchDB node into a Seeks node. Then the community would
have several the advantages from it, for example:

    * Installing Seeks easily, just point your CouchDB to the Seeks
      application and replicate (few clicks), and you can keep it
      updated to the last version by continuous and decentralized
      replication, no need to package.
    * It would be the same for any other Seeks components: anyone can
      start to hack it's own piece of software (e.g. parser) directly in
      the browser using the programming language of their choice
      (JavaScript, PHP, Ruby, Python or Erlang), and distribute it to
      any other Seeks user without any effort.
    * CouchDB is sufficient by itself (no ngnix, apache, etc. in front).
    * It's easy to install and multi-platform (Windows, OSX, Android,
      Linux, etc.).
    * It's lightweight.
    * It has a powerful RESTful API.
    * It's a cutting edge technology Web server, does almost all the
      work for you when developing JSON/HTML5 apps (data validation,
      events, etc.), e.g. implementing a meteor-like interface that
      reflects data in real-realtime takes 5 minutes.
    * It's good to store (like MongoDB) an serve binary data as well, so
      snippets could contain thumbnails, video footage, etc.
    * Thus, anyone having a Seeks/Couch node would have a powerful Web
      server, people could then host their own data, and index it into
      Seeks instead of pointing to external resources (even big video
      files, as p2p replication assets of CouchDB could load-balance
      large bandwidth to other nodes).
    * It has data versionning (e.g. interesting for snippet history).
    * NoSQL (no-shema), so very flexible regarding snippet structure
      evolution and extra data.
    * Stored document's uuids are128bits hashes: halos fit right in.
    * It comes with user management (excellent for profiles) : roles,
      ACL, authentication (with openid), authorization (with oauth, out
      of the box, e.g. cool for managing access rights on node's served
      Web applications).
    * Online/offline capabilities : e.g. you can access a URL from your
      offline mobile to communicate it to someone (or capture a new URL
      from a QR code and store it on the device), while the replicated
      DB is still available on the network from another up and running
      host, and when you are back online they sync :-)

Well, the actual way is probably the best, but while browsing about
CouchDB I found this manner could be interesting as well, even very
different, it was just to share my discoveries ;-)

(Noncommercial) restrictions as mentionned in the Makefile:
