Safe Exam Browser is a webbrowser-environment to carry out online-exams safely. The software changes any computer into a secure workstation. It regulates the access to any utilities and prevents students from using unauthorised resources.

Features

  • Webbrowser-environment to carry out online-exams safely
  • Fullscreen or browser window mode (without any navigation elements)
  • Disables shortcuts and operating system functions like Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del / Cmd-Alt-Esc), program switcher (Alt-Tab, Win-Tab / Cmd-Tab), Print Screen / Screenshot etc. which should not be available during an exam
  • Prevents students from surfing the internet during an exam
  • Compatible with basically all web-based exam systems, additional integration with learning management systems Moodle, ILIAS and others
  • Possibility to permit controlled use of additional external applications
  • Current versions supports Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Mac OS X 10.7 up to macOS 10.13 High Sierra and iOS 9.3.5 to iOS 11.
  • SEB 2.x can be started or reconfigured for each exam just by clicking a special link in some regular web browser or in an e-mail
  • Detection if SEB is running on a virtual machine, monitoring which processes are permitted or prohibited to be running during the exam
  • Easy installation and deployment: Create .seb configuration files with which SEB can be configured/reconfigured after installation

User Reviews

  • Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is, perhaps, one of the most intrusive pieces of software ever shoved into students' PCs. Not only does it have the feeling of being intrusive; it acts as such a virus which takes control of your PC thinking that it belongs to the software. Upon launch, SEB starts hijacking hotkeys, short-cuts, fullscreen mode, and basic Windows features. What makes the experience even worse is how SEB tries to treat your personal computer as its enemy. It does not act like an app but more like an invasive malware that locks down your PC in an aggressive way. What is frightening about SEB is how much it behaves like a real piece of malicious software: aggressively, destructively and totally regardless of user control or consent. It seems that the motto of SEB is "nothing to trust, everything to break". SEB doesn't care whether it ruins your productivity or violates your accessibility settings. SEB doesn't care what shortcuts you use and that your device is your property. It is amazing that any educational institution thinks it is acceptable for students to have to install such software. The configuration system is a joke as well. Everything is password protected, which allows the SEB to be in full kiosk mode and prevents any sort of control over the exam software from the user’s side. Maybe it would not matter on a school-owned device, but on a private computer, this is totally unacceptable. No examination software must be able to disable the system-level input or interfere with the computer at all except during the exam time. What about performance? Exactly as bad as one would expect from such a program. It is slow, clumsy, outdated, and freezes often. Its user interface feels like being created in 2008 and has not been updated since. The bottom line is Safe Exam Browser is an extremely bloated, invasive piece of software that brute-forces its way to solving exam security and creates collateral damage on every step along the way. Not only is it terrible software – it’s software that actively disrespects the user and their computer. Verdict: SEB seems like a virus, behaves like a virus, and feels like a virus. The only thing missing is you having to install it.
