I forgot to mention that I did eventually find out what was happening with Sourcemage. Now, compiling by hand would have worked in any case. At issue was a change they made for a bug. I have not tracked the bug # down and corrected it, but essentially they were doing $ more /var/lib/sorcery/codex/stable/gnome/scrollkeeper/BUILD ( sedit "s/if xmlcatalog/if ! xmlcatalog/" configure default_build ) > $C_FIFO 2>&1 $ So essentially my theory is someone got the error for the DTD not being there and changed this so they would not get the error. I will find out why eventually, but this of course has the result that if you have the dependency installed you will fail. Sourcemage usually has things like this in their spell script config files to fix broken ./configure and make files (or at least things that are broken for their distro). This will not affect any normal compilations, just compiles using their scripts. I will let you guys know when I find out more (have been fighting other battles). Hi, This is further in continuation of my earlier mail about "Indication of newly added omf file". On further analysis I wrote a small API say scrollkeeper_get_omffile_count() in update.c which will return the count of omf files that needs to be registered/unregistered with scrollkeeper_docs. With the help of this API any help browser would know if there are any newly installed omf files that needs to be registered and if so it can prompt a message to the user asking him to run 'scrollkeeper_update' to register them. Issue in implementing the API: ----------------------------- I find that scrollkeeper doesn't have any API yet and hence there are no scrollkeeper .h files to export the API's, so for implementing this scrollkeeper_get_omffile_count() we would need to have a scrollkeeper .h file installed in standard path (like /usr/include/scrollkeeper/*). Pls. let me know if we could move forward in implementing this API. Note: Am not sure if my previous mail sent on '25th Apr 2003' was delivered to this list as I couldn't see it in the archives list "http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=2014500&forum_id=4112", hence am attaching my previous mail with it. Thanks & Regards, Raj. |

Hello, I have gone through open issues in the sf.net bug tracker, here are the results: Already fixed ============= * [ 420537 ] hungarian translation updated * [ 440414 ] look for libxml includes in <libxml/...> * [ 542740 ] Update man page (AFAICS at least) * [ 573006 ] comments in Makefile.am files * [ 576244 ] rpm build fails on 0.3.9 and 0.3.10 * [ 604106 ] /tmp security bug. Fix attached ============ * [ 430498 ] sk-gen-docuid doesn't take flags (patch-seriesid, a string change) * [ 431615 ] FreeBSD Linker errors [ 676043 ] -lintl missing in LDADD in Makefile.am @LTLIBINTL@ was not being linked in. Also, it must be built before programs that use it. Hopefully now configure --with-included-gettext works. [Also, I had to run gettextize --copy --force --intl to update the included libintl copy to keep it in sync with macros from /usr/share/aclocal, which were pulled in by autogen.sh & autoconf. This is presumably not an issue for people using prebuilt tarballs without running autoconf.] (patch-libintl; needs checking on real FreeBSD or other system that doesn't provide gettext in -lc (like glibc) and doesn't have its own libintl) Can I commit the patches? Also, the bugs should be closed/modified, I can't do that. Mirek |

Hi, Is there a way to indicate an application (say help browser) using scrollkeeper when a new omf file is added to the "omf-dir". Consider the following scenario: ------------------------------- - Install a new component (say test-app) to gnome desktop whose help docs are maintained by scrollkeeper - On installing the new component the omf file (test-app-C.omf) will be added to the "omf-dir" and the help doc (test-app.xml) will be placed in "docdir" - Now the component install by the 'sys-admin' should typically run 'scrollkeeper-update' to register the new omf file test-app-C.omf with the scrollkeeper, so that when the end-user launches help browser he will be getting a link to the view the help file for his component 'test-app' - In some cases the component install fails to run 'scrollkeeper-update' which inturn prevents the help browser from having a link to the newly installed 'test-app' as the omf file test-app-C.omf is not registered with the scrollkeeper The above abnormal condition will prevent the user to browse the help manual for the newly installed component. As a solution for this am trying to throw a Message Dialog when the user launches help browser asking him to run 'scrollkeeper-update' in the following scenario: - A new omf file is added to the "omf-dir", but it's not registered to the scrollkeeper through scrollkeeper-update For this the help browser should sense that a new omf file is added and it's not been registered and only then it should prompt the user to run scrollkeeper-update. Pls. let me know if there are any scrollkeeper API's that I could use in the help browser for this purpose. Thanks & Regards, Raj. |

You're right; we should check for it. I've added it to my TODO list that I will look at this weekend (the scrollkeeper suggestions are really piling up this week). I noticed that the new SK makes use of strndup in i18n.c. This function doesn't exist on FreeBSD or Solaris. I implemented a quick version inline for FreeBSD, but one might consider checking for strndup in configure, and, if it's not found, use another function, or an inline implementation. Keep in mind (when you're debugging) that if you use soapbox with the=20
default action "warn" that it fakes as if every system call that wants to=
=20
change something outside of it's 'safepath' succeeds. So a program could=20
end up doing crazy things because of that ;)
If you use action "err" it will return Permission Denied. Which is more=20
like it would expect ;)
[dag@lisse ~]# soapbox -a err scrollkeeper-update -p /var/scrollkeeper/
Attempt to open64("/dev/tty", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK, 0000).
Attempt to open64("/dev/pts/9", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK, 0000).
Attempt to open64("/dev/tty", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK, 0000).
Attempt to open64("/dev/pts/9", O_RDWR|O_NONBLOCK, 0000).
Attempt to mkdir("/var/scrollkeeper", 0755).
Could not create directory /var/scrollkeeper : Permission denied
Could not create database. Aborting update.
Or if you use "halt" a system call that is not allowed will cause the=20
program being halted 'succesfully' without being executed.
I have 2 things on my soapbox wishlist to improve this scheme.
The first one is using ptrace (instead of function) overloading. Someone=20
told me you can intervene with ptrace and do almost the same things=20
(which I still have to see ;p)
The second thing I would like to do (probably a seperate program) is that=
=20
every action outside the safepath that is changing files is making a copy=
=20
of that file to another location and manipulates it there. So that at any=
=20
point you can do a recursive diff of both the original and the files that=
=20
were touched by the program.
If I can add this, I can have the same functionality. I can see what=20
actually is happening without it changing anything for real and without=20
fooling the program. And probably your program would have worked as norma=
l=20
in that case too.
But now I have to live with the imperfections I create ;P
Kind regards,

Hi, I'm the author of soapbox, which is a program that tricks processes ;) An= d=20 it seems that scrollkeeper-update doesn't like this and eithers segfaults= =20 or gets involved in a recursive bug and then segfaults. First of all, soapbox fakes succesful completion of libc functions, so I=20 can understand that this isn't in itself a bug in scrollkeeper-update that would occur in real world situations, but it is bugging me a lot and= =20 should obviously be fixed. More information about soapbox at: http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/soapbox/ BTW These problems occur on scrollkeeper-0.3.10-7 on RH8 and on =20 scrollkeeper-0.3.11-3 on RH9. Problem 1: segfault =A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8=A8 If you install soapbox, and you do: soapbox scrollkeeper-update -p /var/scrollkeeper you trigger the bug where it segfaults. [dag@lisse ~]# soapbox scrollkeeper-update -p=20 /var/scrollkeeper -o /usr/share/omf/eog/ soapbox: Attempt to open64("/dev/tty", O_NONBLOCK, 0000). soapbox: Attempt to open64("/dev/tty", O_NONBLOCK, 0000). soapbox: Attempt to mkdir("/var/scrollkeeper", 0755). Segmentation fault Probably because mkdir("/var/scrollkeeper") seemed to have worked and the= =20 following function-call isn't safe. That is pretty scary. :-( If that is a systematic bug, then builds must be failing all over the place for Sourcemage. The problem with things like this is that people then sub-consciously put Sourcemage on a mental list of "distributions which do slightly crazy things from time to time" and you start suspecting distro problems when solving their problems -- whether deserved or not. I hope its just a silly error that they can fix easily across the board. Thanks a lot for letting us know the resolution, it will probably help somebody else at some point now that it is in the archives. Cheers, Malcolm -- Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm. |

Thank you for your help with this problem. I have found that the problem is really in my distrobution, which for some reason is altering the configure script before running it. I was able to run the unmodified one fine. Below is a snippet of my post to the sourcemage users mailing list:
On to my problem. I was able to fix it, sort of, but it is not "really fixed" yet. What I found is that in the original source for scrollkeeper the offending line does not have a !, so it reads:
if xmlcatalog /etc/xml/catalog "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.1.2//EN" |
grep "No entry" >/dev/null ; then
Honestly the ! smelled funny to me in the first place. Anyway when I cast the spell, the resultant configure file in /usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12 has:
if ! xmlcatalog /etc/xml/catalog "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.1.2//EN"
| grep "No entry" >/dev/null ; then
So somewhere the cast is inserting this ! which changes the test so that it succeeds only if you do *not* have the proper DTD installed. I was able to change this in the configure script, then do a
./configure && make && make install
and all was well, I was even able to cast gnome-terminal normally because although it still needed scrollkeeper to be cast and recast it it still compiled itself properly since scrollkeeper is really there (whereas it broke before because scrollkeeper was neither cast nor there). I am still interested in fixing this bug so I can cast scrollkeeper properly, and was planning to learn to write spells so learning how cast works will be beneficial anyway.
Just to make sure I am not being insane, I did the following:
$ cd /home/rifter/iftest
$ echo raar > raar
$ cat raar
raar
$ if cat raar | grep raar
> then
> echo true
> else
> echo false
> fi

true
$ if cat raar | grep notthere
> then
> echo true
> else

All very good suggestions... Well, the installation is likewise being done as root. I have an idea about the shell, though... You see, root on most Linux Distros uses bash as default, and I have learned not to change that, but I do often use ksh and usually my normal user has that as a default shell. On this machine, that is pdksh. It appears that in the window in question I had logged in as my normal user and su'ed to root, therefore I tried logging in another virtual terminal as root, but it had the same results. I am going to set -x in the configure script and see if that revceals something. Meanwhile, the shells in question are: root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# bash --version GNU bash, version 2.05b.0(1)-release (i386-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc. root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# ksh -o vi # echo $KSH_VERSION @(#)PD KSH v5.2.14 99/07/13.2 # I thank you again for responding as you have. I guess the main question is if I remove the check for the dtd I have to wonder if this will somehow mess up scrollkeeper.. I will keep you posted on what I find :). Unfortunately, as you have noticed, it appears like everything should be working. The configure script works for everybody else (as far as I know -- I guess we would here the screams if something broke), so I am not really sure what to suspect. One possibility is the shell you are using; some configure scripts have broken with various bash upgrades over the past year or so, but I thought the scrollkeeper one was pretty portable. Maybe we need to look at that again. What shell and what version are you using? [...] > So I don't know if I am doing something wrong or something is odd on > my system. You could remove the test for the DTD altogether from the confgure.in file and then rerun autogen.sh to recreate the configure script. However, this might be fiddly to make it fit into the Sourcemage build process. I do not really understand how Sourcemage do their build stuff, so I cannot suggest much here, but if they come back with any information about how to fix the problem, please let us know. Right at the moment, I am suspecting something strange either about your distribution or about your particular setup. The fact that the commands work properly on the command line for you is a bit disconcerting. > Thank you very much for your patience and help. It's the right list to ask about problems of this nature, since it is the only scrollkeeper list around and the build process is certainly developer territory (if it's broken). Sorry I can't be of more help, but at the moment this problem has me befuddled. Cheers, Malcolm -- Tolkien is hobbit-forming. |

This may be somewhat of a newbie question, but I have not found an answer elsewhere and do not know where else to turn for advice. My problem is that the check for docbook xml does not seem to work properly on my system. I am sadly somewhat ignorant as far as dockbook, xml, and scrollkeeper, but I am rapidly remedying this situation (the main purpose in installing scrollkeeper atm is to make gnome-terminal work, though I am sure there are many useful things to do with this. Briefly, my problem is as follows. I am getting the following error during the configure step: === checking for xslt-config... /usr/bin/xslt-config checking for docbook-dtd412-xml... * ERROR * Couldn't find the DocBook XML V4.1.2 DTD. Please make sure that you have the docbook-dtd412-xml package installed. If it is installed, the package probably did not register the DTD in the catalog properly. Consult http://scrollkeeper.sourceforge.net/docbook.shtml for more information. configure: error: DocBook XML V4.1.2 DTD not present in /etc/xml/catalog. Make sure docbook-dtd412-xml is installed and registers DTD in catalog. === The pertenant portion of the configure script appears to be: === echo "$as_me:$LINENO: checking for docbook-dtd412-xml" >&5 echo $ECHO_N "checking for docbook-dtd412-xml... $ECHO_C" >&6 if ! xmlcatalog /etc/xml/catalog "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.1.2//EN" | grep "No entry" >/dev/null ; then echo "* ERROR * " echo " " echo "Couldn't find the DocBook XML V4.1.2 DTD. Please make sur e that you have the docbook-dtd412-xml package installed. If it is installed, th e package probably did not register the DTD in the catalog properly. Consult htt p://scrollkeeper.sourceforge.net/docbook.shtml for more information." === but when I copy and paste the exact command into my xterm I get: === root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# xmlcatalog /etc/xml/catalog "-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.1.2//EN" file:///usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.1.2/docbookx.dtd root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# === further, I get the following: root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# file /usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.1.2/docbookx.dtd /usr/share/sgml/docbook/xml-dtd-4.1.2/docbookx.dtd: exported SGML document text root@perita:/usr/src/scrollkeeper-0.3.12# So I don't know if I am doing something wrong or something is odd on my system. I am running Sourcemage Gnu Linux 0.51 on an Athlon XP platform if it is important. Since the actual choice of software and the compilation are being driven by Sourcemage spells I am going to also check with that group to see if they have input. Also if there is something relatively harmless I can do to hack this process and make it go I will be grateful for suggestions. I am loathe to try hacking around the configure script without being sure of what I am doing ;). Thank you very much for your patience and help. I know this is a developer list but there don't seem to be other lists associated with this package and it is a compile problem I am having... |
