Hi, Steve and the rest, I go on with the comment editor, mostly because I am planning to record some chess videos and I want to use Scid/ScidvsPC. When using arrows to talk about diagonals, columns, possible plans, etc., they are almost no use for something like a video because they are very thin. In addition, they don't even reach the middle of the destination square, but they stop once inside. Would it be possible to make them thicker and longer? -- Saludos. Hi Alan, Sorry, but i'm not too interested in Scid's LaTex features. I know it's a nice format with a lot of history, but it's an absolute devil to work with. If anyone makes reasonable patches, i'll be glad to include them. PS - i'm still cleaning up the docking system. It seems mostly finished :) As soon as i debug it on OS X, i might ready Scid vs PC 4.9, but I'm still fairly busy. Recent other tweaks include the ability to hide the gamelist buttons via right-clicking the gamelist, not starting engines at Docking start-up , and binding 'Space-Bar' to engine stop/start. Carlsen vs. Anand. Bring it on ! S. Hi Steveand community, I've been printing individual games and game collections by exporting them to Latex. However, there seems to be two essential components missing that I believewould enhance the printouts: For game collections, away to number each game; and for each ply of moves, thechess engine's evaluation. When evaluating one's own games with Stockfish (or some other engine,) this excellent feature wouldhelpto evaluate the estimated positional value of the move. And it would be even more helpful when combined withinserted variations. Example: *Game 1* Myaskov I Alekhine, Alexander 19031 - 0 D43 1 . d4 d5 [0.00] 2. c4 e6 [+0.15] 3. Nc3 Nf6 [+0.18] 4. Nf3 c6 [+0.25] 5. Bg5 Be7 [+0.20] 6. e3dxc4 [-0.12] 7. e4 h6 [-0.18] 8 Bxf6 Bxf6 [-0.25] ... I'm not a programmer or a LaTeX practitioner, but I've tried using the following code to enumerate the games. The problem is that each game will need to be wrapped with the'enumerate' environment. \begin{enumerate} \item {\bf $\circ$ Myaskov, I\\ $\bullet$ Alekhine, Alexander\\ \\ 1903 \hfill 1-0 \hfill D43\\ } \begin{chess}{\bf 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 c6 5.Bg5 Be7 6.e3 dxc4 7.e4 h6 8.Bxf6 Bxf6 9.e5 Be7 10.Bxc4 Nd7 11.O-O Nb6 12.Bd3 c5 13.dxc5 Bxc5 14.Ne4 Be7 15.Rc1 Bd7 16.Qe2 Bc6 17.Rfd1 Nd5 18.Bb1 Qb6 19.b3 Nf4 20.Qb2 Bxe4 21.Bxe4 Rd8 }\end{chess} {\bf 1-0} \end{enumerate} Hopefully I was clear enough, your help is greatly appreciated. |

Hello Steve, I just can see your response sorry for that. I already have installed the 4.8 not docking version, I need to uninstall it? Hmmm ... i didnt check the photos feature, and there is an error with this. (Thanks Benigno) Fix is in svn, and I'll upload a new windows beta sometime (but till then just disable it in Options->GameInformation->Photos) @Dale - Hmm - this is nothing 'ive seen before. Does it start any faster with Docking disabled ? (Go to Options->Windows and disable docking, then restart) It may also be related to the FIDE.spf bug i had, so disable photos as per above, or it could be related to windows DRM somehow. (Your slowdown sounds reminiscent of Windows Vista performance problems, though I know you are using Win7) so try removing the spelling file. Please email me how it goes, and if no improvement, please zip up the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Scid vs PC-4.8\bin\config\ and sned it to me. @Mario - You should install subversion for ubuntu, then install scidvspc with these commands svn co https://scidvspc.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/scidvspc scidvspc (or svn co http://scidvspc.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/scidvspc<https://scidvspc.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/scidvspc>scidvspc) cd scidvspc ./configure (check configure runs successfully) make clean install /usr/local/bin/scid Steve |

Hi Steve, I'm a recent convert to SCIDvsPC from mainline SCID... I've applied your beta on my Win7 box and while it works fine from what I can see (I've only had a little play with it), the time it takes to open has increased rather dramatically. Opening the app - without loading any database with it - takes over 2 and a half minutes. Most of this time is spent displaying no information to the UI, so I originally thought it was crashing silently. Startup window text is provided below. As you can see it's loading player photos and a large spelling file. I can try opening the app without these, but it was loading quite quickly before applying the new .exe. Let me know if you need more info, the docking seems to work great in all other regards, possibly better than in SCID - as I said, I haven't had a proper play with it. Window Docking is working and in subversion. Subversion check out is something like svn co https://scidvspc.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/scidvspc scidvspc Here is a windows binary/gui (which can be placed in "\bin" with the full install of ScidvsPC-4.8.exe). http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows-beta/scidvspc_20130331.zip/download The feature is enabled and configured by Options->Windows. There are a few differencess with mainline Scid. The main board context menu is different (you can hide stuff via this menu) Like Scid, you can dock FICS/pgn/gamelist/comment editor/engines/tree. And extra to Scid you can dock the playerinfo , bestgame, book and crosstable, but not the tacgame/seriousgame/ECO browser You can use the options "-dock" and "-nodock" from the command line, but using "-nodock" will reset the default docking layout (as a measure of error recovery). There seems few bugs on windows and less on Linux :). But my non-genuine win7 still throws harmless errors when program closes, and i'm curious if anyone with an genuine/update win7 or win8 has the same problem. Whats happening with the tree window and best games is a little complicated. It works for me but if you have issues, pls find out how to replicate them and let me know. BTW, Scid-4.4 is out. It's not a bad interface, but the new filter stuff/sort doesnt need much serious prodding before it falls over. I'm more aware of little bugs in our filter too, so i'll try to fix them sometime before next release. Steve |

The clocks should be next to the live game board, whether digital or "analogue." And, the digital font sucks and isn't configurable. Someone playing or observing on FICS should easily be able to see both the board and the console at the same tie. And, when observing, I like to have the tree view of the database and/or an engine visible at the same time. It's hard with separate windows scattered all over. Something else to consider, .... I run two screens. The are pretty isolated in that I cannot drag windows from one to the other, they are displays: 0.0 and 0.1. By this means I have programs started from one display open on that same display rather than, as on Windows, choose one at random. Of all the desktop managers on linx around, FVWM supports the setup best, and that means testing on Debian or a derivative, or maybe Fedora. GNOME almost does it, but it has a bug or two. Anyone who wants to play with this but lacks the hardware can set up a virtual machine in, maybe, VirtualBox It would be useful to me if SCID* would allow me to open a new undocked window on another display. Maybe in future this could be extended to share selected windows remotely for coaching? -- Santa |

i have menu bar disabled, because that makes bigger the board windows (the board bigger) it would be nice to have active alt-f to open menu file and to navigate between menu when menu bar is disabled, using ALT-F and arrows to move to others menu and to select or exit from menu with ESC. ciao e grazie! when there is not active board when i type observe or exam, it would be nice to have the first board active without click from fics windows to promote on main board. if someone mexamine me (mexamine acconcio) not sure that i can use wheel or button bar to move pieces on examined board (when mexamine promotes me as examiner). thanks again i LIKE scid_vs_pc!!!!! |

To follow the game live on FICS, just login and type "ob gmcarlsen" and "ob gmaronian" (etc) Steve "tell relay listgame" to see games from any international tourney in fics, "ob game_number" or "ob name_player", if you are looking for the best game standard at the moment, "ob /s" (/b blitz) ciao! |

Hopefully i'll get a windows binary and svn commit happening over easter. Here is the latest patch though. http://scidvspc.sourceforge.net/tmp/docking.patch.gz There's been a lot window focus issues and geometery issues to resolve. And if a docked engine fails to start, mainline Scid crashes but hopefully i've fixed that bug. I've still been working on bug-fixing, so several windows havent been docked yet: tree, bestgames, comment editor, player info are all penciled in. PS. It looks like very likely that Levon will end up with a draw, putting Magnus ahead. |

Big windows could docked under the main board, as a tab, ad with Scid. That way, one could have a readable game list window even with a notebook. |

Should we dock it ? a minimimal board + telnet that uses half screen, that's what i need, i use scid with half screen 13xx large and i dont understand why should be a problem to play in that configuration using a reasonable telnet windows to read messages and to chat. buttons are old to me, menu mouse and line editing are fast and modern :D ciao & grazie! |

It would be nice also a simple telnet fics windows with no buttons, just: windows telnet, board to play, and that's all. ciao e grazie :D |

Hi all, That's a very very nice addition to scidvspc! Given the whole polemic about the "merge" we've learn that the docking feature is what stops many people to use scidvspc. I believe it's a good idea to add it for our scid-no-bugs-vsPc ;-) Steven did you try it on OSX ? If not, I subscribe! I guess the FICS window can stay out of docking mode but if it is possible to assign it to the main area it could still be useful. Thanks and congrat' Steven! --gp Le 21 mars 2013 à 07:32, Steve A a écrit : > Anyway, i have the dockable windows feature more or less working (see attached) > Scid doesn't dock the crosstable, player info (and some others) but > both of these seem good candidates for docking to me. > > I'm not sure about FICS though... Anyway, i have the dockable windows feature more or less working (see attached) Scid doesn't dock the crosstable, player info (and some others) but both of these seem good candidates for docking to me. I'm not sure about FICS though... Enrico ? Our FICS window is just too big. Should we dock it ? enrico wrote > is there a way to eliminate pop-up windows? any kind of? > thanks you if there is i forgot :) I suppose you arer talking about FICS. Maybe i should substitute the three "No Draws, No Abort, No Adjourn" menus and just have one "No popups" menu item. Steve |
