I really like the docked windows feature. Its one of the things I was hoping for. I've noticed a small bug though. I'm running windows 7 btw... When starting up the program, the window size is always the same (never saves from previous time i opened it), and the chess board is constantly flickering as if stuck between two sizes. This is resolved by resizing the window, but it happens every time i start the program. Thanks again Steve. Great work!! |

Hi Nathan, This annoying bug should be fixed in ScidvsPC 4.9. Here is the probable release http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/mac/ScidvsMac-4.9.dmg/download But the news for OSX is not good. The docked windows feature of 4.9 is not supported very well by the Macs buggy implementation of Tcl/Tk. It works, but not especially well - so people may want to use it in undocked mode until i have it sorted out sometime in the future and make a point release. S. |

Hello all, I have an engine window that's always at the top of my screen. I'm using ScidVsMac v. 4.8 on Mac OS 10.7.5 How can I un-snap / move that window to get the window title/frame back? I can't move the engine analysis window from its current position because there's no title bar on the window. I have a screenshot here: http://www.notesmine.org/lib/exe/detail.php?id=start&media=no-title.png Thanks, --Nate |

Hmmm - I think wish-8.6 should be working now. :-) It has an unusual bug todo with destroy and catch, but it seems we can work around it. svn update ./configure TCL_VERSION=8.6 make clean install I've also restructured some of the html export stuff (bitmaps directories shoould be automatically saved alongside the exported html file) and fixed the Win7 Opening Report HTML bug. Please test it all. S. Hi Alan, I done quite a bit of debugging on the docked windows this last fortnight - there was quite a few obscure ways to break it - and it's about ready for a release i think. This feature is heavily themed (the tabs/notebook widgets are part of ttk - Themed Tk), so i've added a Theme option too - the Clam theme looks great. Just writing up the change-logs today, some more testing and should be out in a week or so i'd guess. One thing of import is - *Wish-8.6.0 is beginning to ship with Linux distros, * *but it does not work with docking mode*. You'll need Wish-8.5 for this feature. S. Hi Steven, Are you going to release the 4.9 versionof scivspc any time soon, or are you going to waituntil it merges into scid? I'vesvn'd the latest 4.8, with the windowdocking, but have not installed it yet sincethere is a possibility of furtherupdates being effected. Is there an approximate ETA? Thanks! |

Hi I am running arch linux, tcl 8.6. Everything works fine but two features: 1) Next problem only appears in dock-mode: I start a machine (stockfish) by clicking on the locomotive. Once I am done with the analysis, I click the locomotive to just stop it, but the result is that the entire scidvspc crashes. In the console where I started scidvspc a message is left: X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 10 (X_UnmapWindow) Resource id in failed request: 0x3c00653 Serial number of failed request: 17262 Current serial number in output stream: 17312 2) I start Play -> FICS but in the window below the FICS console, where the clocks should be, well... no clocks. Only a slide-bar. This happens in dock and no-dock mode. Any idea? Thanks, Fernando |

> What's the purpose of the Swap Colours, Invert and Transpose > buttons, and why isn't there a simple "flip board feature"? You're right that this board set-up isn't great, or very easy to grasp. And it needs drag and drop, but the coding is non-trivial. Maybe a simple 'flip' would be an idea, but it is achievable by an invert+transpose, and we need a transpose to compliment the search current-board feature - which doesnt have a transpose option. I just made these buttons because i'm often setting up positions from (a vague) memory and these three cover all the bases for when i forget which colour i was. PS. I looked at quickly adding a transpose to search current-board but this is certainly non-trivial. *If anyone would like to get their hands dirty coding <transpose> for tkscid.cpp::sc_search_board, it would be great*. The existing <flip> option is for "Ignore Colours" and is not a transpose. S. |

Hello all, I'm looking to use the Setup Board screen in Scid Vs. PC to set up a board that shows black at the /bottom/ of the screen. (In other words, the board is shown from black's perspective). I tried using "Swap Colors", "Invert" and "Transpose" to flip the board to make it easier to setup the position. However, I can't get any of them to work correctly, because scid vs pc still thinks that A1 is on the bottom left, so it tries to move pawns backwards (to Queen). What's the purpose of the Swap Colours, Invert and Transpose buttons, and why isn't there a simple "flip board feature"? Thanks, --Nate |

You probably have wish-8.6.0 installed, which has a bug. The window docking feature doesnt work with this version and you have to install tcl/tk-8.5. I recommend 8.5.13 or 8.5.9. digital clock works better perhaps why not to just change digital clock underground from grey to white for both colors, and why not to make side to move the same when digital is working? that would be more fast for blitz. ciao & thanks you! |

Hello, I am trying to use tablebases in Scid vs. PC. The Nalimov Tablebases work by setting options --> Tablebase directory, but I want the engines to access the tablebases. I am using Houdini, and Critter. I have downloaded the Gaviota tablebases and set "GaviotaTbPath=/home/sam/Software/Tablebases/Gaviota" (no quotes) in the "parameters" box in the configuration for the engines, but it doesn't work. Am I on the right track? How can I (or can I?) use the tablebases? If it is relevant, I am using Ubuntu and have the tablebases downloaded as 145 .cp4 files in the above directory. Thanks! Sam |

Hello, My friend reported (!) that his favorite package was this: http://ctan.cms.math.ca/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/xskak/xskak.pdf It's been 10 years since I've delved into LaTeX, but glancing at the doc I found these features intriguing: - reads PGN, which can come handy to include computer evaluations; - provides game ids, again handy to create collections; - renders colored arrows, which I believe is a must for books; - animates chess games. The last feature simply flabbergasts me. *** Googling, I stumbled upon this project: http://chesstask.sourceforge.net This might be useful (I wish I had this 25 years ago!), but even more useful is the sister project: http://pgn2ltx.sourceforge.net It might need to be improved (it relies on skak, not xskak), but this kind of solution could help separate LaTeXing from Scid. *** Hope this helps a bit, Ben |

This can be tweaked fairly easily here (below) "0.0" is a shrink factor (less means longer lines) "-width 5" is the arrow thickness. How best to include these options into the GUI/menuing system, i'll have to think about. I'll ask my LaTeX guru, a candidate master, to take a peak. I don't promise anything in a near future, as he just got a gig at the U. *** I don't think much programming fu is needed to delve into LaTeX and Tcl. Most problems come from a lack of familiarity with programming practices. For instance, an explanation how to send in patches would help. I would include such explanation in an How To, linked from the Contribute page. |
