I've just compiled a quick todo of the major things that people may wish to look at. Most of these will probably never get done :), but here they are. I'll write them up properly on the webpage sometime soon. If anyone can think of things that've been mentioned in the past, but forgotten , pls let me know. Steve * Mainline SCID's new filter sort feature finally seems to be bug free, but i am unsure about it's merit. It is a little confusing having more than one notion of sort, and the changes are not trivial (and probably detract from stability). What do we do when copying temporarily sorted games to a new base ? All bases seem to be sorted the same way ?? If anyone feels strongly about this feature and is a good C++ coder, they are welcome to prepare a patch for testing. * Openseal is an open source version of FICS Timeseal. It needs some rewriting to work with Scid, though it is a small program. * FICS could be adapted to work with the ICC. The work involves analysing the differences in the strings used by the two programs. (for example, for FICS we have this line to ackowledge successful log-in if {[string match "*Starting FICS session*" $line]} { The two servers do have many similarities i think, and examining xboard's "backend.c" (or some other client) for "FICS" particularities * Russian translation is broken afaics, and has been removed for the time being. * The month i've updated the translations a little. (Thanks to Peter for totally overhauling the Dutch one). The checklangs.tcl script is in much better shape, but of course there are still lots of translation "todos" * The TCL sound package, Snack, needs a maintainer. * There was a lot of work done to implement Fischer Chess (Chess 960), but they never fixed all the bugs, and the web site http://www.wtfai.me.uk/scid960.html is now gone. The latest code is in ScidvsPC's source patches/chess960.patch * The Tree code works reasonably well, but i have never found the time to overhaul the Slow/Fast/Slow&Fast modes. These were (for a long time) negelected when Fulvio wrote the interuptible tree code. Scid now has the Modes removed, so doing this in ScidvsPC probably wouldnt be terribly hard to do. * There are two engine types - UCI and XBoard. Pascal's UCI code is in some ways inferior to Shane's Xboard code. Though this is mostly mitigated by the speed of modern processors, it'd be nice to make use of the UCI ponder feature in analysis mode (Comp mode already does so). * I've never had a chance to verify/update the Novag Citrine drivers and interface due to lack of hardware. * Our Windows port needs a little overhaul to properly use Users home directory to store all the various data. I will get around to doing it one day though. * A lot of people use chessbase books (.ctg). Scid can only read polyglot opening books, but inlining this projects work may not be too hard. https://github.com/sshivaji/ctgexporter * A quality, free, community database - though i don't really want to go over what has been said before - so best to trawl the mailing list archives to catch up on this one. |

I've uploaded another windows 32 bit snapshot. http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/windows-beta/scidvspc_20130721.zip/download This has the latest fics changes, and also some better windows focus stealing code. Sorry, but i'm not familiar with Tortoise svn interface. On linux i find the command line very easy to use, and learning subverion is not too hard imho. It's only a few commands really. But you can always get the latest code with this link https://sourceforge.net/p/scidvspc/code/HEAD/tarball > When did this, the resulting bin folder worked fine, I just couldn't see a place to enter the backup FICS server. Maybe you have more than one Scid vs PC installed ? Do a ls -l `which -a scid` and check that the Scid you are running is the same as the one you just compiled. For reference, attached is a screenshot of the latest FICS config window. I thought I had this SVN stuff down, but its a total fail for me. I am using TortoiseSVN ; I make a new folder "create repository here" then do "SVN checkout" with the link from the website ( http://svn.code.sf.net/p/scidvspc/code/ scidvspc-code) but i get an error that "the URL doesn't exist" any thoughts? also i used the Tortoise SVN browser and the url is fine. I can even drag those files into a folder on my computer and dl them. When did this, the resulting bin folder worked fine, I just couldn't see a place to enter the backup FICS server. Thanks all. I may have to do more reading but i'm pretty sure I got the steps right from what i've read. I just wanna be one of the in crowd using subversion :-) - Teddy |

Hmmm - it's a reasonable idea i guess. After this line if {[makeCompMove $current_engine]} { insert this code in scid.gui or tcl/tools/comp.tcl ### Store evaluation set comment $analysis(score$current_engine) if {$comment > 0} {set comment +$comment} sc_pos setComment $comment ### Store expired time (in milliseconds) and %eval # sc_pos setComment "\[%ms $expired\]\[%eval $analysis(score$current_engine)\]" This adds scores which can be inspected via Scid's Score Graph. Alternatively, use the %eval notation which is more standard. I will include this code in some way - but probably as a comment only (so people may enable it if they wish) as we just have too many options already. Scid vs PC tournaments are fun, but the slow tcl/tk overhead doesnt make them a serious contender against the other tournament softwares, so i don't work too much on this. Also , the scores are disparate, as every second score is given by the engine moving, so the graphs can look a little funny (see attached image - if the mailing list allows the jpg - where Toga doesnt know it is losing against Critter for a long while). Is it possible to configure the tournament so that engines print their evaluations (and ideally time too) of each position? |

HI Steve, Would like to let you know however that after the patch, there is a problem with keyboard context when alt-tabbing on and off scidvsmac. Whenever i try to look for the moves in a pdf file that i have and alt-tab to Scid to move forward with moves, the keyboard context is no more there. I have to manually click either on the board or on the moves to get the keyboard context working again. Even then at times moves don't seem to happen when keyin in the move-forward > button etc... Ok - i was wrong, and you need the current version for this to work. Attached is a patch for converting 4.9.2 to todays svn. First, reverse previous patch (same command as before but add '-R') or reinstall 4.9.2, then patch using patch /Applications/ScidvsMac.app/Contents/MacOS/scid <svn.patch OS X has very nasty TCL and TK bugs, and Apple show no inclination to provide even one paid dev to fix this complicated and important software. That is why we include our own TCL with scidvspc and in future may have to link TCL to XQuartz instead of the more attractive carbon framework. Anyway, i might not reply anymore to this thread. Hope it works. You can always install svn, XCode, and then checkout svn and use "make mac" and "make mac_install_gui" to keep up with most recent changes. Steve |

Hi Steve, Thanks. I ran the command, but before that would want me copy the file that you attached somewhere? I copied it to the same location where "scid" was present (i.e. under /APplications/ScidvsMac.app...etc) and then ran the command. The logs said the patch application was successful and indeed it did work too, when i click "v+varNumber". However, it loses the keyboard context. I need to have to click back on the moves or the game window to resume. I see that, as per your email that is exactly what you tried to tweak. But why isn't that working for me? Messing around with patches isn't especially easy, and 'patch' may not even be installed, but you can try patch /Applications/ScidvsMac.app/Contents/MacOS/scid < osx_focus_tweak.patch or look online for 'patch' tutorials. It is an ugly, but handy skill to have. S.A. On Thu, Jul 4, 2013 at 10:55 PM, Arun Kumar <aru...@gm...> wrote: > Hi Steve, > > Thanks much for this. But how do I install the given patch? Hi Steve, Thanks much for this. But how do I install the given patch? Haven't done this before. Though got a good idea of patch building etc, in this open source context am not very sure. Any instructions on how to apply the patch?
