Hmmm.... The function of that button is to "raise all windows" and is mainly used in non-docked mode, The two rectangles dont quite look like windows, so maybe another icon would be better. S. Used play option 'tactical game' as shown via video, it comes back and says Phalanx and Toga not found?? Looking at help it suggest these are the necessary 'players' and suggests they have not been loaded properly? Do I need to download an engine as well has having down the database... Colin Troth |

Thank you, Steve. Now I noticed that the functionality "Tools->Export Current Game->Export Game to PGN" works as expected there already now. I will use that one meantime until new version with that bug-fix is released - thanks again! Another question, although it's another issue definitely: What is the functionality of the button right beside of the "rotate board"-button in the main toolbar (looks like "copy"-button)? Didn't find anything of this one in the help-menue. Is it possible to create mouse-over-info's for those buttons in the main tool bar as well? Hi stevenaaus, thanks a lot for your great SCID-fork. Now playing chess makes fun on Linux as well. However, I think I found a nasty bug in the pgn export. I changed language to German: Therefore the notation also switched into german language ==> ok. But the pgn also gets saved that way and the file cannot opened any more, because that's not the pgn standard. :-( Example: A) English Language works perfect 1.) Open ScidvsPC 2.) play moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Bb4 3.) save as pgn (menue: file->save pgn) ==> ok 4.) open that file again ==> ok B) Bug in Language German (and maybe others as well) 1.) Open ScidvsPC 2.) play moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Bb4 3.) save as pgn (menue: file->save pgn) ==> file gets saved in "german" notation = 1.e4 e5 2.Sc3 Lb4 4.) ==> this file cannot be opened any more I'm working with the latest version 4.11. I don't know if this error crept in with that version or even existed in earlier versions. Could you check please? Thanks again for your great work here, Frank |

The window docking feature is a themed tk (ttk::) feature, and you can see the themes under Options->Theme There cant be too many around, but I found a few themes here at tktable. http://tktable.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/tktable/tile-themes/ (theme source download link) http://tktable.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/tktable/tile-themes/?view=tar They are probably for Linux only, but i'm not sure. I have uploaded my x64 tcl packages here http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/support%20files/ttk-themes.x64.tgz/download move the 5 directories or so to /usr/local/lib (or /usr/lib or /lib64) depending on your tcl install directory Then load them using this hack, and look at Options->Theme after restarting Scid. --- tcl/start.tcl (revision 1714) +++ tcl/start.tcl (working copy) @@ -1655,7 +1655,12 @@ set boardSize $newSize # Load theme -ttk::style theme use $lookTheme +catch {package require ttk::theme::tilegtk} +catch {package require ttk::theme::tileqt} +catch {package require ttk::theme::keramik} +catch {package require ttk::theme::keramik_alt} +catch {package require ttk::theme::plastik} +catch {ttk::style theme use $lookTheme} Lots of messing around, but interesting. Hi, I have a quick question about adding new chess fonts to Scid vs. PC. >From researching the mega-thread on Scid vs. PC on chess.com it appears that this can be accomplished in Windows by editing the scid.gui file with the appropriate base-64 strings. I'm running Linux Mint 15 and cannot find a scid.gui file or anything pertaining to it in ~/.scidvspc. Where can I find this file or its equivalent? Thanks, Cortman |

It would be possible to concatenate saved searches into a single search file, but i'm not sure if this is too helpful, or worth the complexity/programming effort. (Currently of course one may manually load a few searches back to back and AND/OR them as one pleases.) I'm also interested in learning/overhauling the EPD file feature properly. This allows for quick access to different positions, but currently i'm not very familiar with it. Perhaps using this feature is helpful when studying one's repertoire. Steven |

I was thinking about opening repertoires recently. Chessbase appears to have a feature in which the user outlines his repertoire and can then easily search a database for any games in the repertoire. Obviously a Scid user can do this by searching a new database for each position one at a time. However, it would be nice to be able to outline a repertoire once and then be able to use it in searches easily going forward. Essentially, this would consist of the user doing a series or combination of searches on a database and then somehow saving those searches as a single search file that could be used later. In fact, there would be no reason why this would have to be limited to the issue of repertoires. I might have some very specific, complicated search that I often do involving ratings, years, material patterns etc. It would be nice to be able to create complicated searches and then save them so that they could be used later with just a few clicks. I see that Scid vs. PC already has such a thing as saving and loading searches but this only seems to be possible for one single search of a specific type (e.g. one general search). I am interested in combinations of searches using AND/OR options and combining different types of searches (position, general, material/pattern, moves). Is there currently any way to do something like this, and if not, would this be very hard to implement? Thanks. -John |

I am using Scid vs. PC and enjoying it very much. My feature request has to do with captured material- in the current version of Scid vs. PC it is shown as chess pieces along the right side of the board when "Toggle Material" is selected. Unfortunately when more than 15 pieces have been captured the column gets cut off at the top and bottom. Could we have these auto-resize so that they always stay in view? In addition to or if that can't be done, just showing a total of the value of captured pieces somewhere there would be extremely handy as well. Thanks, Cortman |

I've rewritten some elements of the sound interface. It seems to work better (but not perfectly) on both my linux systems, so people may like to check out subversion if their sound is buggy. https://sourceforge.net/p/scidvspc/code/HEAD/tarball If it still doesnt work, pls send me the contents of the Help->Startup window. Other minor changes in svn are - right clicking the game save toolbar iscon does a quick save, and the game result is now shown more prominently in the gameinfo area. Steve |

Hi all, While playing around I've noticed a bug with F11 Fullscreen. Pressing F11 does make it fullscreen but once its full, the top menu bar doesn't work. Clicking on File for instance, just makes the File box go into some kind of 3D relief effect but doesn't drop down the menu. This means that no features can be accessed without keyboard shortcuts, and if you don't know the command to go away from fullscreen, you're stuck until you restart the program. Fairly minor for me as I don't need fullscreen but someone may be affected by this. Has anyone else observed this issue? I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 by the way. Cheers Dale |

I'm not super proffecient with Trees and Book .. but how they work is distinct. Books have a weight, and trees have a frequency and score. Books are of course much quicker, and most people want to make books out of databases, not the other way around. But of course, creating free quality databases and books is a great thing to do. You can send me a screenshot of Hiarcs Chess Explorer window you mention if you care to explain it more... though i cant be too optimistic about changing these well established / defined features. > Also, as I've mentioned to Steve, I'd like the option to always open that database as a tree on startup. In subversion, mainline SCID has the option to automatically open bases, but i cant agree with this feature Steve. It has several bugs i've noticed, and on occaisons , only makes life harder. So i probably won't adjust this beyond what it can do now. ... Bases can be opened from the command line (or by an alias such as - alias scid="/usr/bin/scid $PATH/mybase $*" and it is already possible to open the tree window also by default. S.A. |

Hi, I'd like to create or download an opening database to open in the Tree Window. What I'd really like is to open the performance.bin opening book in the tree window. That's the way the Hiarcs Chess Explorer works: the selected opening book automatically appears in the opening tree window - perfect. I've been unable to find an comprehensive opening database in pgn or scid format. So, perhaps I'll have to create one. My idea would be to export, from a large database, all positions that have been played 2 or more times by players rated greater than such and such. Is there a way to do that? Has anyone undertaken such an endeavour? Also, as I've mentioned to Steve, I'd like the option to always open that database as a tree on startup. Cheers, Steve |

Open fics connection then undock, then close it, then reopen it. In my experience there is a "clock already set" crash message, the only way to reconnect is to close and reopen fics. Get tell message from more than 1 person on fics, then press F9 several time every time you press F9 the tell name string is not cleaned and added ,but is always added. i hope this report is correct. ciao e grazie P.S. i really like scidvspc! |

Hmm... made some hacks to the to the linux tcl sound package, Snack. http://sourceforge.net/projects/scidvspc/files/support%20files/snack2.2.10.scidvspc.tgz/download I also added startup and end sounds. to FICS. I'm well sick of our crappy sound dependancy, but it now works passably on my Fed14 system, which is something. Tested it on Mint 15 though, and it's still fairly broken there.... S. |

I lose my opponents because I do not hear the beep at the beginning of the game, this determines rude behavior on my part, and a decrease of fun for everyone. Please add a beep at the beginning of the game, if the sound is turned on for the game. PLEASE: D hello! |

Maybe it would be possible in the future to make this window wider > horizontally. Yes... I'll have to refine annotation some more. It's quite a popular feature. There is also an issue about engines having analysis cached from previous runs, that complicates testing. Please email me games that cause problems. , preferably using free engines such as Critter 1.6, Ivanhoe, and Stockfish. S. |
